The characteristics of tidal circulation with Hyungsan River discharges in Youngil Bay by the numerical experiments is elucidated. For the simulation of tidal residual currents related to inflow by the river discharges in Youngil Bay located in the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula, the two-dimensional numerical experiment is peformed. The tidal elevation boundary conditions of the 4 main tidal harmonic constituents (M₂, S₂, K₁ and O₁) on the open boundary and river discharges at the river boundary are considered. The computed results obtained from numerical experiment showed good agreements with the field observation ones. The residual currents generally flow toward the inner bay through the western (Dalman-Gap) and central areas of the bay, and then the currents go toward the outer bay along the eastern shore (Changgi-Gap) of the bay with anti-clockwise circulation. Especially, in the numerical experiment without Hyungsan River discharges, these flow patterns are disappeared. Based on the results, it showed that the Hyungsan River discharges play the dominant role in the patterns of tidal residual currents. This flow pattern of tidal residual currents are important mechanism of water quality, material transport in Youngil Bay.
Background: In Korea, riparian zones and some floodplains have been converted into agricultural fields and urban areas. However, there are essential for maintaining biodiversity, as they are important ecological spaces. There are also very important spaces for humanity, as they perform various ecosystem services in a changing environment including climate change. Due to the importance of rivers, river restoration projects have been promoted for a long time, but their achievement has been insignificant. Development should be pursued by thoroughly evaluating the success of the restoration project. Ecological restoration is to accelerate succession, a process that a disturbed ecosystem recovers itself, with human assistance. Ecological restoration can be a test bed for testing ecological theories in the field. In this respect, ecological restoration should go beyond a 'simple landscaping exercise' and apply ecological models and theories in restoration practice. Results: The cross-section of the restored stream is far from natural rivers due to its steep slope and artificial material. The vegetation profiles of the restored streams did not reflect the flooding regime of the river. The species composition of the vegetation in the restored stream showed a significant difference from that of the reference stream, and was also different from that of an unrestored urban stream. Although species richness was high and the proportion of exotic species was low in the restored stream, the effect was offset by the high proportion of gardening and landscaping plants or obligate terrestrial plants. Conclusions: Based on both the morphological and ecological characteristics of the river, the restoration effect in the restored stream was evaluated to be very low. In order to solve the problems, a systematic adaptive management plan is urgently required. Furthermore, it is necessary to institutionalize the evaluation of restoration effects for the development of river restoration projects in the future.

In this study, we investigated the physiochemical characteristics of temporal estuarine environment formed during the summer flood season (consecutive rainy days with average 50 mm day$^{-1}$ precipitation) in the coastal area of South Sea of Korea. The freshwater from the Seomjin River was characterized by lower temperature, salinity and pH, and high concentrations of COD and nutrients. In the summer flood season, such peculiar Somejin-River freshwater was dispersed southward along the coast of Yeosubando-Dolsando-Geumodo, form-ing temporal estuarine environment (defined as "Coastal Pseudo-Estuary" in this study) throughout the entire study area (as far as 60 km from the Seomjin River mouth). Compared to the winter dry season, the DIN/DIP ratio was almost doubled (16-36) during the summer flood season. This excessive nitrate supply during the summer flood season was probably due to nitrogenous fertilizer. Distribution and behaviors of physiochemical factors in this coastal pseudo-estuarine environment were controlled not only by the runoff of the Seomjun River (physical mixing of river water with seawater) but also by the biogeochemical estuarine processes which are mostly similar to those of the river estuary.r estuary.

Six locations in the automated monitoring network at the Geum River Basin were selected forthis study. The water quality characteristics at two of the locations in the water quality monitoring network that were identical, or nearby, were examined, and their correlations were evaluated through statistical analysis. The results of the water quality analysis were converted to the water quality index and expressed in grades for comparison. For the data necessary for the study, public data from four years, from 2016-2019 were used and the evaluation parameters were water temperature, pH, EC, DO, TOC, TN, and TP. Results of the analysis showed that the water quality concentrations measured in the automated monitoring network and the water quality monitoring network differed in some measured values, but they tended to register variation in a specified ratio in most of the locations in the network. The analysis of the correlations of the parameters between the two monitoring networks found that water temperature, EC, and DO showed high correlations between the two monitoring networks. The TOC, TN, and TP showed high correlations, with a 0.7 or higher (correlation coefficient r), with the exception of some of the monitoring networks, although their correlations were lower than those of the basic parameters. The water quality index analysis showed that the water quality index values of the automated monitoring network and the water quality monitoring network were similar. The water quality index decreased and the pollution degree increased in the downstream direction, in both networks.

Background: Large rivers are ecological treasures with high human value, but most have experienced decades of degradation from industrial and municipal sewage, row-crop agricultural practices, and hydrologic alteration. We reviewed published analyses of long-term fish diversity publications from three intensively managed large river ecosystems to demonstrate the conservation potential of large river ecosystems. Results: We show how the incorporation of recent advances in river concepts will allow a better understanding of river ecosystem functioning and conservation. Lastly, we focus on the Wabash River ecosystem based on high conservation value and provide a list of actions to maintain and support the ecosystem. In the Wabash River, there were originally 66 species of freshwater mussels, but now only 30 species with reproducing populations remain. Although there were multiple stressors over the last century, the largest change in Wabash River fish biodiversity was associated with rapid increases in municipal nutrient loading and invasive bigheaded carps. Conclusions: Like similarly neglected large river systems worldwide, the Wabash River has a surprising amount of ecological resilience and recovery. For instance, of the 151 native fish species found in the 1800s, only three species have experienced local extinctions, making the modern assemblage more intact than many comparable rivers in the Mississippi River basin. However, not all the changes are positive or support the idea of recovery. Primary production underpins the productivity of these ecosystems, and the Wabash River phytoplankton assemblages shifted from high-quality green algae in the 1970s to lower less nutritional blue-green algae as nutrient and invasive species have recently increased. Our recommendations for the Wabash River and other altered rivers include the restoration of natural hydrology for the mainstem and tributaries, nutrient reductions, mechanisms to restore historical hydrologic patterns, additional sediment controls, and improved local hydraulics.

This study dealt with the Kogi River, located in Kaizuka City, Osaka, which has experienced different improvements from the upper through the lower regions, aimed at revealing temporal relations between residents and the river, as well as probing future problems and directions regarding the river in the suburban area, by conducting a survey of local residents. The result showed that, in the upper region where nature remains in its natural state and the good water quality has been maintained, the relations between the residents and the river continued until around 1965; meanwhile in the middle region the relations have been disappearing since about 1955, and in the lower region where the stream has been repeatedly rehabilitated since 1955, there are fewer involvements of the people with the river. It also revealed that the weaker the relations between people and the river became, the larger the number of residents, even in the upper region, who became concerned over the deteriorating river environment after about 1975, and that in the middle and lower areas, about a decade earlier than in the upper area, the number of those who were aware of the environmental deterioration began to increase. Consequently, with an eye to resuming the relations between people and the river in an suburban area, their future challenges would be the space improvements depending on the environmental characteristics of the area; for example, the recovery of grassy banks for the purpose of protection in the lower region; the preservation and maintenance of many waterside woods as well as the creation of open spaces utilizing the river banks in the middle area; and throughout the whole region, the establishment of a system in which the relations between man and the river can be passed down to future generations, by utilizing the local human resources including those who know the former river landscapes or about the playing in and around the river.

The Kurobe river, which runs through eastern Toyama Prefecture is one of the most famous rivers for wild water because of its steep slope in the range from 1/5 to 1/120. This river forms an alluvial fan in the range up to 13 kilometers from the sea. In this region, significant seepage flow occurs and thus the stream sometimes been intermitted. Moreover, the amount of seepage flow seems to vary with the groundwater level of the region. To keep the river environment healthy for flora and fauna, especially to conserve good condition for spawning of fishes, an appropriate environmental flow should be maintained in the river. To achieve this target, controlling of the upstream reservoir has to be studied in depth. One of the major problems to decide the amount of water to be released from the reservoir to maintain the environmental flow is to estimate the amount of water leaked into the groundwater from the river. This phenomenon is affected by the river flow rate as well as the groundwater level in the alluvial fan and the conditions vary in space and time. Thus, a grid-based hydrological cycle analysis model NK-GHM has been applied to clarify the hydrological cycle componentsin this area including seepage/discharge from/to the river. The model was tested by comparing with river flow rate, groundwater levels and other observations and found that the model described those observations well. Consequently, the seepage from the Kurobe river was found significant but it was also found that the groundwater in this region has been preserved by the recharge from the irrigation water supply into paddy fields in the alluvial fan.

To control organic matters, it needs to manage not only biodegradable organic matters but also refractory organic matters. Refractory organic matters from municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater, non-point sources and etc., have been continuously discharged to the near watersheds. It is estimated that the refractory organic matter ratios are continuously increased in waterbody. In watersheds of the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), it was investigated that COD/BOD ratios increased in many unit watersheds of the 4 major river basins. The portions COD/BOD ratios increased were found to be a 97% of Geum River unit watersheds, a 81% of Yeongsan/Seumjin River unit watersheds, a 78% of Nakdong River unit watersheds, a 70% of Han River unit watersheds, respectively. Therefore, it has become important for establishment of effective management strategies to control refractory organic matter in watersheds of the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). In order to properly manage organic matters including refractory organic matters, the present organic indicator (BOD) has to be converted to TOC (or COD). Compared to COD and BOD, TOC, as a organic matter indicator, is evaluated more appropriate.
Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have a wide range of domestic and industrial applications, but they are persistent in the environment. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) are among the metabolites of PFCs and occur at high concentration in the environment. Korea is the largest importer of PFC compounds in the world, therefore, the accumulation of these compounds is possible. In this study, the concentrations of PFOS and PFOA were determined in water samples taken from sewage treatment plants (STPs) and the Han River in Seoul, Korea. After extraction with a HLB cartridge, PFCs in the samples were analyzed by HPLC with an ion trap mass spectrometry in electrospray negative mode. Limits of detection was between 1 and 1.6 ng/l. The result showed that the concentrations of PFOS and PFOA in effluent and influent of the four STPs in Seoul were 60~570 ng/l, and not detected (nd)~254 ng/l, respectively. The levels of PFOS and PFOA were higher in the effluents which passed through the treatment process than in influent water samples which was against expectation. The concentration of PFOA and PFOS in the Han River was 60~570 ng/l and nd~254 ng/l, respectively. PFOA was detected in every sample, but PFOS was only detected in the downstreams of the Han River. This result indicates that there is comprehensive contamination of PFCs in the aquatic environment in Korea.

The seasonal variation of organic matter and the oxidation efficiency of BOD and COD were investigated in several reservoirs and rivers located in the Han River system from March 2005 to April 2006. The concentrations of TOC in the Dong River, the Myeongjicheon stream and the Han-River varied with season. Mean concentration of TOC in the lotic environment ranged from 1.9 to 6.8 mgC/L. Oxidation efficiencies calculated from carbon were approximately 12.6 to 27.1% for BOD and 27.2 to 75.0% for COD, respectively. DOC to TOC ratio in the rivers ranged from 64.3 to 79.0%. Epilimnetic TOC concentrations in two clear and deep lakes (Lake Soyang and Paro) ranged from 2.0 to 2.8 mgC/L. TOC concentrations in the lower three dams (Lake Chunchon, Uiam, and Chungpyung) were relatively high that ranged from 3.4 to 3.7 mgC/L.Oxidation efficiencies in five lakes ranged from 10.6 to 17.2% for BOD and 32.6 to 49.5% for COD, respectively. The range of DOC to TOC in Lake Soyang and Paro was approximately 69. 0 to 73.4%. The ratios of lower three dams ranged from 48.2 to 62.3%. The differences among the lakes seemed to be asociated with limnological and hydrological characteristics of the lakes.
