  • We prove that a certain class of real hypersurfaces in $P_3({\mathbb{C}})$ has the rigidity. Making use of this we classify all homogeneous real hypersurfaces in $P_3({\mathbb{C}})$.

  • This thesis investigated the behavior of super structure by varying the factors such as the change of pile rigidity, the characteristics of soil and the constraint condition of support. The results of this study are as follows; 1. The pile rigidity in the Fig 3.3 computed by the rotating deformed plane method becomes the elastic range at approximately about 5.1 m (D : 1.0 m) below the ground level. This result is consistent with the previous study that the pile deformation occurs approximately 3 to 6 times pile diameter from the pile head. 2. The values of forces and deformations for the structure-pile system in Y-direction appeared larger than that in X-direction, since the pile rigidity and constraint condition of support were changed as shown Fig.3.5 to 3.8. 3. The current practice for the analysis of structure-pile system has not considered the variation of pile rigidity and the constraint condition of support. So, the analysis of structure-pile system with large difference in super-structure rigidity must includes these factors in both X and Y directions.

  • Opioid-induced rigidity is a potentially life-threatening complication that can occur after treatment with large doses of opioids, but with early recognition it can be treated effectively with naloxone or with muscle relaxants. Regarding its onset time, there have been few case reports that have described delayed manifestations of opioid-induced rigidity. The mechanism of this complication is not well understood. In this report we describe a case of incidental overdose injection of sufentanil and subsequently review the confusing clinical features that require immediate diffenrentiation and the possible mechanim of this complication.

  • Damage caused in CFRP laminates by low energy impact of steel ball are investigated ultrasonically. Two types of laminated specimens having different stacking sequence are used as a target material. The effects of pre-bending on the behaviors of impact damage are specifically discussed. The initiation and progagation behaviors of delamination were largely dependent upon the bending rigidity of each specimen. Specimen C having higher bending rigidity produced larger delamination damage than the Specimen D having relatively low bending rigidity, however it was little for the Specimen C. Application of pre-bending increased the apparent bending rigidity of target during impacting, it produced delamination at lower impact energy level compared to the case of no preload.

  • A linearly tapered, doubly symmetric thin-walled closed member, such as power-transmission towers and tourist towers, are often characterized by local variation in mass and/or rigidity, due to additional mass and rigidity. On the preliminary stage of design the closed-form solution is more effective than the finite element method. In order to propose approximate solutions, the discontinuous and local variation in mass and/or rigidity is treated continuously by means of a usable function proposed by Takabatake(1988, 1991, 1993). Thus, a simplified analytical method and approximate solutions for the free and forced transverse vibrations in linear elasticity are demonstrated in general by means of the Galerkin method. The solutions proposed here are examined from the results obtained using the Galerkin method and Wilson-${\theta}$ method and from the results obtained using NASTRAN.

  • This study aims to quantify the effects of medication (Med) and deep brain stimulation (DBS) on resting rigidity in patients with Parkinson's disease. We tested 10 limbs of five patients under each of four treatment conditions: 1) baseline, 2) DBS, 3) Med, 4) DBS + Med. Rigidity at the wrist joint was assessed using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). The examiner randomly imposed flexion and extension movement on patient's wrist joint. Resistance to passive movement was quantified by viscoelastic properties. Not only rigidity score but also damping constant showed improvements in rigidity by DBS and Med treatments (p<0.05). This indicates that the viscosity can represent the change in rigidity due to DBS as well as Med, which was manifested by UPDRS score.

  • Objective : To investigate the effects of posterior implant rigidity on spinal kinematics at adjacent levels by utilizing a cadaveric spine model with simulated physiological loading. Methods : Five human lumbar spinal specimens (L3 to S1) were obtained and checked for abnormalities. The fresh specimens were stripped of muscle tissue, with care taken to preserve the spinal ligaments and facet joints. Pedicle screws were implanted in the L4 and L5 vertebrae of each specimen. Specimens were tested under 0 N and 400 N axial loading. Five different posterior rods of various elastic moduli (intact, rubber, low-density polyethylene, aluminum, and titanium) were tested. Segmental range of motion (ROM), center of rotation (COR) and intervertebral disc pressure were investigated. Results : As the rigidity of the posterior rods increased, both the segmental ROM and disc pressure at L4-5 decreased, while those values increased at adjacent levels. Implant stiffness saturation was evident, as the ROM and disc pressure were only marginally increased beyond an implant stiffness of aluminum. Since the disc pressures of adjacent levels were increased by the axial loading, it was shown that the rigidity of the implants influenced the load sharing between the implant and the spinal column. The segmental CORs at the adjacent disc levels translated anteriorly and inferiorly as rigidity of the device increased. Conclusion : These biomechanical findings indicate that the rigidity of the dynamic stabilization implant and physiological loading play significant roles on spinal kinematics at adjacent disc levels, and will aid in further device development.
