  • Shock and vibration characteristics of a tractor-trailer type vehicle system with air suspension and air coupler running on a single bump road are investigated. The vehicle system is modelled and solved to two types of models, i.e. rigid-multi-body and flexible-multi-body model, by ADAMS and NASTRAN software. And the shock impulse is given by a single bump model on the road. When the analysis results of the rigid-multi-body model is compared with those of the flexible-multi-body model, it is revealed that the vibration and accelerations of the latter model are more repetitive and larger than the former.

  • A theoretical study of Boussinesq equations (BEs) for internal waves propagating in a two-fluid system is presented in this paper. The two-fluid system is assumed to be bounded by two rigid plates. A set of three equations is firstly derived which has three main unknowns, the interfacial displacement and two velocity potentials at arbitrary elevations for upper and lower fluids, respectively. The determination of the optimal BEs requires a solution of depth parameters which can be uniquely solved by applying the $Pad{\acute{e}}$ approximation to dispersion relation. Some wave properties predicted by the optimal BEs are examined. The optimal model not only increases the applicable range of traditional BEs but also provides a novel aspect of internal wave studies.

  • Equations of motion are derived and solved using the finite element method substructure synthesis for the disk-spindle system with rigid spindle and flexible shaft. The disk is modeled as a flexible spinning disk by Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman nonlinear strain. The spindle supporting the flexible disk is modeled as a rigid body to consider its complex geometry. The stationary shaft supporting the rotating disk-spindle-bearing system is modeled by Euler beam, and the ball bearings are modeled as the stiffness matrix with 5 degrees of freedom. Developed theory is applied to analyze the vibration characteristics of a 3.5" HDD and a 2.5" HDD, respectively, and modal tests are performed to verify the simulation results. This paper shows that the developed theory can be effectively applied to the rotating disk-spindle system with the spindle of complex shape.

  • Two different types of polymer-modified mortars(PMM) were prepared with recycled PET and fly-ash. One is rigid PMM and the other is flexible PMM which are based on the composition of recycled PET. Their mechanical properties including friction coefficient measurement and damping characteristics such as sound absorption were investigated and compared with the commercial PMM such as epoxy PMM and PET PMM. The result from mechanical properties indicated that the rigid PMM could be competitive with the commercial PET PMM. The measurement of sound absorption coefficient showed that both rigid PMM and flexible PMM had much better damping capacity than commercial PMM. However, the friction coefficient of rigid PMM revealed that it would be suitable for the use as floor material.

  • Vertical vibration tests were conducted using model footings of different size and mass resting on the surface of finite sand layer with different height to width ratios which was underlain by either rigid concrete base, under both dry and saturated condition. The effect of saturation on the damping ratio of finite sand stratum underlain by a rigid base has been verified and compared with the results obtained for the case of finite dry sand stratum underlain by the rigid base. Comparison of results of the experimental study showed that the damping in both the cases is less than 10%. The damping ratio obtained for finite saturated sand stratum is marginally lower than that obtained on finite dry sand stratum at H/B ratio of 0.5. The difference between the two cases becomes significant when the H/B ratio increases to 3.0, indicating the significant influence of soil moisture on damping ratio of foundation- soil system with increase in the thickness of the finite sand stratum. Comparison of the predicted damping ratio for a homogeneous sand stratum with the experimental damping ratio obtained corresponding to the height to width ratio of 3.0 of the finite sand stratum underlain by the rigid concrete base indicates a significant reduction in damping ratio of the foundation-soil system for both the cases.

  • In the present paper, we report a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study for the structure and dynamics of H+ ions in non-rigid dehydrated H12-A zeolite framework at 298.15 K, using the same method we used in our previous studies of rigid and non-rigid zeolite-A frameworks. It is found that two different structures appear, depending on the choice of the Lennard-Jones parameter (σ) for the H+ ion, as is also observed in the study of rigid dehydrated H12-A zeolite framework, but the ranges of σ are different for the two structures. It is also found that some of the H+ ions exchanged their sites without changing the number of H+ ions at each site. The agreement between experimental and calculated structural parameters for non-rigid dehydrated H12-A zeolite is generally quite good. The calculated IR spectrum by Fourier transform of the total dipole moment auto-correlation function shows two major peaks, one around 2700 cm-1 and the other around 7000 cm-1. The former appears in the calculated IR spectra of non-rigid zeolite-A framework only system and the latter remains unexplained except, perhaps, as an indication of a new formation of a vibrational mode of the framework due to the adsorption of the H+ ions.

  • Some structures under the action of some specific loads can be treated as consisting of rigid and deformable parts. The paper presents a way to include rigid elements into a finite element model accounting for geometrical and material nonlinearities. Lagrange multipliers technique is used to derive equations of motion for the coupled deformable-rigid system. Solution algorithm based on the elimination of the Lagrangian multipliers and dependent kinematic unknowns at the element level is described. A follow-up paper(Rojek and Kleiber 1993) complements the discussion by giving details of the computer implementation and presenting some realistic test examples.

  • Diagnosis and repair tasks of an unbalanced rigid rotor reduce the chances of unexpected failure and the consequent losses in production, time, and money. This paper presents investigation of a balancing system for equilibration of rigid rotor unbalance. A practical vibration signal based method is developed for unbalance diagnosis using wavelet technology and a Lissajous diagram. This paper shows that a mass unbalance can be efficiently estimated through an appropriate narrow-band filter used to extract the required spectra component. The wavelet technology is used to design specified narrow filter bank. A modified Lissajous diagram is also introduced with statistical analysis to compute the phase position. Several experimental tests demonstrate the effectiveness in balancing the mass unbalance of a rigid rotor.

  • The non-rigid molecule group theory (NRG) in which the dynamical symmetry operations are defined as physical operations is a new field of chemistry. Smeyers in a series of papers applied this notion to determine the character table of restricted NRG of some molecules. In this work, a simple method is described, by means of which it is possible to calculate character tables for the symmetry group of molecules consisting of a number of NH3 groups attached to a rigid framework. We study the full non-rigid group (f-NRG) of tetraammineplatinum(II) with two separate symmetry groups C2v and C4v. We prove that they are groups of order 216 and 5184 with 27 and 45 conjugacy classes, respectively. Also, we will compute the character tables of these groups.
