This study analyses the seismic response of a three-dimensional (3-D) rigid massless square foundation resting or embedded in a viscoelastic soil limited by rigid bedrock. The foundation is subjected to harmonic oblique seismic waves P, SV, SH and R. The key step is the characterization of the soil-foundation interaction by computing the impedance matrix and the input motion matrix. A 3-D frequency boundary element method (BEM) in conjunction with the thin layer method (TLM) is adapted for the seismic analysis of the foundation. The dynamic response of the rigid foundation is solved from the wave equations by taking into account the soil-foundation interaction. The solution is formulated using the frequency BEM with the Green's function obtained from the TLM. This approach has been applied to analyze the effect of soilstructure interaction on the seismic response of the foundation as a function of the kind of incident waves, the angles of incident waves, the wave's frequencies and the embedding of foundation. The parametric results show that the non-vertical incident waves, the embedment of foundation, and the wave's frequencies have important impact on the dynamic response of rigid foundations.

Seismic analyses of structures can`t be performed without considering the effect of soil-structure interaction and seismic responses of a structure taking into account the stiffnesses of a foundation-soil system show a significant difference from those with a rigid base. However, current seismic analyses of apartment building structures were carried out assuming a rigid base and ignoring the characteristics of a foundation and the properties of the underlying soil. In this study, seismic analyses of apartment buildings of a particular wall-slab structural type were carried out comparing seismic response spectra of a flexible base with those of a rigid base and UBC-97. Wall-slab type low-rise or mid-height apartment buildings built on the deep soil layer showed a rigid body motion with the reduced seismic responses due to the base isolation effect, indicating that it is too safe but uneconomical to utilize the design spectra of UBC-97 for the seismic analysis of a wall-slab type apartment buildings due to the too conservative design.
This study, analyses the seismic response for a rigid massless square foundation resting on a viscoelastic soil layer limited by rigid bedrock. The foundation is subjected either to externally applied forces or to obliquely incident seismic body or surface harmonic seismic waves P, SV and SH. A 3-D frequency domain BEM formulation in conjunction with the thin layer method (TLM) is adapted here for the solution of elastodynamic problems and used for obtained the seismic response. The mathematical approach is based on the method of integral equations in the frequency domain using the formalism of Green's functions (Kausel and Peck 1982) for layered soil, the impedance functions are calculated by the compatibility condition. In this study, The key step is the characterization of the soil-foundation interaction with the input motion matrix. For each frequency the impedance matrix connects the applied forces to the resulting displacement, and the input motion matrix connects the displacement vector of the foundation to amplitudes of the free field motion. This approach has been applied to analyze the effect of soil-structure interaction on the seismic response of the foundation resting on a viscoelastic soil layer limited by rigid bedrock.
A series of soil bin experiments was carried out on land to evaluate the soil physical properties whether they are pertinent to soil-wheel system and to investigate if true model theory u applicable to powered rigid wheel-soil system. Four different sized wheels having diameter of 45, 60, 75 and 90 em were wed for the experiment. The following conclusion was derived from the study. (1) True model theory can be sufficiently utilized to study the wheel traction and linkage on lands. (2) For both dry and wet sands, Cone Index(CI) and soil shear parameters (c, ${\phi}$) with bulk density (${\gamma}$) were found to be good measures of soil physical properties which are pertinent to predict the performance of the powered rigid wheel-soil system.
The parts of semi-rigid connected and partially embedded piles in elastic soil, above the soil and embedded in the soil are called the first region and second region, respectively. The upper end of the pile in the first region is supported by linear-elastic rotational spring. The forth order differential equations of both region for critical buckling load of partially embedded and semi-rigid connected pile with shear deformation are established using small-displacement theory and Winkler hypothesis. These differential equations are solved by differential transform method (DTM) and analytical method and critical buckling loads of semirigid connected and partially embedded pile are obtained, results are given in tables and graphs are presented for investigating the effects of relative stiffness of the pile and flexibility of rotational spring.
An extended model for the response of a rigid footing on a reinforced foundation bed on super soft soil is proposed by incorporating the rough membrane element into the granular bed. The super soft soil, the granular bed and the reinforcement are modeled as non-linear Winkler springs, non-linear Pasternak layer and rough membrane respectively. The hyperbolic stress-displacement response of the super soft soil and the hyperbolic shear stress-shear strain response of the granular fill are considered. The finite deformation theory is used since large settlements are expected to develop due to deformation of the super-soft soil. Parametric studies quantify the effect of each parameter on the stress-settlement response of the reinforced foundation bed, the settlement and tension profiles.
This paper studies the dynamic foundation-soil-foundation interaction for two square rigid foundations embedded in a viscoelastic soil layer. The vibrations come from only one rigid foundation placed in the soil layer and subjected to harmonic loads of translation, rocking, and torsion. The required dynamic response of rigid surface foundations constitutes the solution of the wave equations obtained by taking account of the conditions of interaction. The solution is formulated using the frequency domain Boundary Element Method (BEM) in conjunction with the Kausel-Peek Green's function for a layered stratum, with the aid of the Thin Layer Method (TLM), to study the dynamic interaction between adjacent foundations. This approach allows the establishment of a mathematical model that enables us to determine the dynamic displacements amplitude of adjacent foundations according to their different separations, the depth of the substratum, foundations masss, foundations embedded, and the frequencies of excitation. This paper attempts to introduce an approach based on a polynomial mathematical tool conducted from several results of numerical methods (BEM-TLM) so that practicing civil engineers can evaluation the dynamic foundations displacements more easy.

In Korea, there are recently many attempts to expand a temporary soil nailing system into a permanent soil nailing system since the first construction in 1993. In the downtown area, it is important that the relaxation of the ground is minimized in the ground excavation works. Due to these problems, soil nailing systems are often used the flexible facing such as shotcrete rather than the rigid facing such as SCW, CIP, and jet grout types in Korea. The soil nailing systems with rigid facings are used greatly however it is insufficient researches for design and analysis of soil nailing systems with rigid facings. In this study, various laboratory model tests are carried out to examining the influence the rigidity of facings on the global safety of soil nailing system, failure loads, displacement behaviour, axial force acting on the nails, and distribution of earth pressure. Also, the parametric studies are carried out for the typical section of soil nailed walls according to thickness of concrete facings and internal friction angle of soil using the numerical technique as shear strength reduction technique.
In this paper the settlement characteristic of shallow foundation on sandy soil overlained by rigid ground was investigated by analyzing results of model tests. For model experiments, model tests were performed with sandy soils sampled from the field, changing the relative density of sandy soil and the ratio of thickness of sandy layer(H) to the width of model strip footing(B). As result of tests, settlement of sandy soils increases as the value of H/B increases, whereas it increases with relative density of soil. Bearing capacity decreases as the thickness of the sand layer relative to the footing width increases. In order to analyze the settlement characteristics of sandy ground, the results of model tests were compared with the predicted values using the empirical formulas proposed by Terzaghi, De Beer and Schmertmann. The method by De Beer was found to be in good agreements with test results.

Rigid soil containers (or rigid boxes) are often used for 1g shaking table tests. The rigid boxes, however, do not accurately simulate the amplification of ground acceleration and phase difference of seismic motion in the model ground due to the confinement of shear deformation and the reflection of seismic wave at the box walls. Laminar soil containers (or laminar shear boxes) can simulate the free field motion at convincingly superior accuracy than the rigid ones. In this study, the soft ground is modeled for both types of boxes and is subjected to seismic loading using a 1g shaking table. The comparison of the results using the two types of soil containers illustrates that, in case of the rigid box, the ground acceleration shows non uniform distribution and the phase synchronization of input motion. Whereas, the dynamic behavior of the laminar shear box shows good agreement with the free field behaviors such as the amplification of ground acceleration and the occurrence of phase difference.
