Existing meso-scale models of concrete need to refine the mesh grids of aggregate and cement mortar, which may greatly reduce the computational efficiency. To overcome this problem, a novel meso-scale modeling strategy, which is based on rigid body spring method and Voronoi diagram, is proposed in this study to establish the meso-scale model of concrete. Firstly, establish numerical aggregate models according to user-defined programs. Circle aggregates are adopted due to their high efficiency in generation and packing process, and the grading of aggregate are determined according to the distribution curve proposed by Full and Thompson; Secondly, extract the centroids of aggregates, and then develop the Voronoi diagram in which aggregate centroids are defined as initial scatters; Finally, establish the rigid body spring model for concrete based on the Voronoi diagram. Aggregates are represented by rigid blocks, and assumed to be unbreakable. Cement mortar is concentrated into the interface between adjacent blocks and represented by two uniform springs. The number of grids is consistent with that of aggregates in specimens, and no mesh-refinement of aggregates and cement mortar is required. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed modeling strategy are firstly identified by comparing the numerical results with the experimental ones, and then the applicability of the proposed strategy with different volume percentage occupied by aggregates is investigated.
To understand the deformation behavior of nonwoven geotextiles(NWGT) reinforced soil wall, analyses of load-elongation properties, soil-reinforcement interface friction, laboratory model tests, and field cases throughout literature reviews are being studied in this paper. According to the analyses results, the stiffness and tensile strength of NWGT is increased in proportion to confinement pressures, and the interface shear strength at soil-NWGT appeared to be stronger than soil-geogrid interface. The deformation at the beginning of loading on NWGT reinforced soil wall is larger than geogrid reinforced soil wall, but the wall deformation with NWGT is smaller than the wall of geogrid after passing some loading point in laboratory model tests. Case analysis results have shown that the facing of NWGT reinforced soil wall should be rigid enough to be used as a permanent wall, and NWGT and in-situ poor soil can be used for reinforcement and backfill respectively if the wall is constructed as pre-reinforced soil body and with post-facing that has a full-height rigid concrete.
The effect of soil foundation plays active role in optimum design of steel space frames when included. However, its influence on design can be calculated after a long iterative procedure. So it requires longer computer time and more computational effort if it is done properly. The main purpose of this study is to investigate how these effects can be calculated in more practical way in a shorter time. The effects of semi-rigid column bases are taken into account in optimum design of steel space frames. This study is carried out by using JAYA algorithm which is a novel and practical method based on a single revision equation. The displacement, stress and geometric size constraints are considered in the optimum design. A computer program is coded in MATLAB to achieve corporation with SAP2000-OAPI (Open Application Programming Interface) for optimum solutions. Four different steel space frames including soil structure interaction taken from literature are investigated according to different semi-rigidly supported models depending on different rotational stiffness values. And the results obtained from analyses are compared with the results available in reference studies. The results of the study show that semi-rigidly supported systems in the range of appropriate rotational stiffness values offer practical solutions in a very short time. And close agreement is obtained with the studies on optimum design of steel space frames including soil effect underneath.

In this study the rigid-plastic finite element method is used in order to study the deformation characteristics of solid cylinder upsetting. The effects of friction and aspect ratios on the effective strain distribution, axial stresses at the die-material interface, radial displacements, strain components, grid distortion on the meridional cross-section and gradual changes of outer profile are studied analyzed and compared with the experiments for commercially pure aluminum and .alpha.-brass. The agreement between numerical (or theoretical)and experimental results is shown to be acceptable for the engineering purpose.

The axisymmetric forward extrusion is analyzed by using the rigid-plastic finite element formulation. The distribution of stresses and strains as well as the deformation pattern in solid extrusion is very important for the improvement of product quality. The initial velocity field is determined by assuming the material as a Newtonian fluid through an arbitrarily shaped axisymmetric die. The workhardening effect and the friction of the die-material interface are considered in the formulation. Some reduction of area and die shapes(conical and biquadratic-curved) are chosen for computation. Experiments are carried out for steel alloy(SCM4) specimens using conical and curved dies. It is found that experimental observation is in good agreement with FEM results. The strain distribution is curved(biquadratic) dies is shown to be more uniform than in conical dies at the same reduction of area.
This paper studies the dynamics of the lineal-located time-harmonic moving-with-constant-velocity load which acts on the hydro-elastic system consisting of the elastic plate, compressible viscous fluid - strip and rigid wall. The plane-strain state in the plate is considered and its motion is described by employing the exact equations of elastodynamics but the plane-parallel flow of the fluid is described by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. It is assumed that the velocity and force vectors of the constituents are continuous on the contact plane between the plate and fluid, and impermeability conditions on the rigid wall are satisfied. Numerical results on the velocity and stress distributions on the interface plane are presented and discussed and the focus is on the influence of the effect caused by the interaction between oscillation and moving of the external load. During these discussions, the corresponding earlier results by the authors are used which were obtained in the cases where, on the system under consideration, only the oscillating or moving load acts. In particular, it is established that the magnitude of the aforementioned interaction depends significantly on the vibration phase of the system.
An unrestrained plane rigid body resting on a horizontal surface which shakes horizontally and vertically may assume one of the five modes of response: rest, slide, slide-rock, rock, and free flight. The first four are nontrivial modes of motion. It is important to study which one of these responses is started from rest as in most studies it is often assumed that the initial mode is the particular mode of response. Criteria governing the initiation of modes are first briefly discussed. It is shown that the commencement of response modes depends on the aspect ratio of the body, coefficients of static and kinetic friction at the body-base interface, and the magnitude of maximum base accelerations. Considering the last two factors as random variables, the initiation of response modes is next studied from a probabilistic point of view. Type 1 extreme value and lognormal distributions are employed for maximum base excitations and coefficient of friction respectively. Analytical expressions for computing the probability values of each mode of response are derived. The effects of slenderness ratio, vertical acceleration, and statistical distributions of maximum acceleration and coefficient of friction are shown through numerical results and plots.

Piled multi-block system has been frequently adopted in the historic structures or monuments of cultural heritage. It is well known that such a structural system is very vulnerable to the earthquake shaking. If the structure is of slender type, then it may experience overturning at very low level intensity of ground shaking. One of the methods used to protect such structures from earthquake is seismic isolation system. But the behavior of multi-block systems mounted on the isolated basis is not well understood yet. In this paper we investigate the dynamic behavior of single slender rigid block mounted on the three different isolation systems, i.e., P-F system, FPS and LRB system. Sliding at the isolation interface of P-F system and FPS is formulated based on Coulomb friction. The mounted single block is assumed undergoing rocking or sticking only. Impacting of a single block is described using distinct element method (DEM). Free vibrations due to a prescribed initial conditions are studied. Responses to the harmonic excitation and earthquake motions are calculated

A penalty finite element method has been developed for accurately predicting stress distributions at the tool-workpiece interfaces. The basic formulation is described, with the emphasis on the algorithm to deal with the normal stress and the frictional stress at the interface. Comparison with the experimental data and the theoretical solutions found in the literature is made for the forming processes selected.

An analytical method for the hydroelastic vibration of a vessel composed of an upper annular plate and a lower circular plate is developed by the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The two plates are clamped along a rigid cylindrical vessel wall. It is assumed that the fluid bounded by a rigid cylindrical vessel is incompressible and non-viscous. The wet mode shape of the plates is assumed as a combination of the dry mode shapes of the plates. The fluid motion is described by using the fluid displacement potential and determined by using the compatibility conditions along the fluid interface with the plate. Minimizing the Rayleigh quotient based on the energy conservation gives an eigenvalue problem. It is found that the theoretical results can predict well the fluid-coupled natural frequencies comparing with the finite element analysis result.
