Damage of cut-and-cover tunnel lining can be attributed to physical and mechanical factors. Physical factors include material property, reinforcement corrosion, etc. while mechanical factors include underground water pressure, vehicle loads, etc. This study is limited to the modeling of rigid circular cut and cover tunnel constructed at a depth of $1.0{\sim}1.5D$ in loose sandy ground and subjected to a vibration frequency of 100 Hz. In this study, only damages due to mechanical factors in the form of additional loads were considered. Among the different types of additional, excessive earth pressure acting on the cut-and-cover tunnel lining is considered as one of the major factors that induce deformation and damage of tunnels after the construction is completed. Excessive earth pressure may be attributed to insufficient compaction, consolidation due to self-weight of backfill soil, precipitation and vibration caused by traffic. Laboratory tunnel model tests were performed in order to determine the earth pressure acting on the tunnel lining and to investigate the applicability of existing earth pressure formulas. Based on the difference in the monitored and computed earth pressure, a factor of safety was recommended. Soil deformation mechanism around the tunnel was also presented using the picture analysis method.
In this study, shear thickening fluid (STF) filled with rigid nano silica particles was impregnated in plain woven Kevlar fabrics to improve the impact resistance performance. The nano silica particles with an average diameter of 100nm, 300nm, and 500nm were used to make shear thickening fluid to estimate the effect of particle size on the impact behavior of STF impregnated Kevlar fabrics. The yam pull-out and frictional tests were conducted to estimate the effect of impregnated STF on the frictional characteristics. The test results showed that the friction forces were dramatically increased at the STF onset shear strain rates that were measured in preliminary rheology tests. The low speed impact tests were performed using the drop test machine. The results showed that the impregnated STF improved the impact resistance performance of the Kevlar fabrics in terms of the impact energy absorption and the deformation. It has been shown through tests that the impregnated STF affects the interfacial friction which contributes to improve the energy absorption in the Kevlar fabrics. Especially, the impregnation of the STF with the smaller particle size into the Kevlar fabrics showed the better performance in impact energy absorption.

Tunnel excavation with several sections and appropriate auxiliary measures such as face bolt and pre-grouting are widely used in case of weak and less rigid ground for the stability of a tunnel face during excavation. This papers first described the evaluation methods proposed in technical literature to maintain the tunnel face stable, and then studied by FEM analysis whether face reinforcement is need in what degree of ground deformation and strength features for the stability of a tunnel face when excavating by full excavation with sub-bench. Lastly, a three dimensional FEM analysis was performed to study how the tunnel face itself and the ground around the tunnel behave depending on different bolt layouts, length of bolts, number of bolts. There were relative differences in comparison of results on the stability of a tunnel face by a theoretical evaluation methods and FEM analysis, but the same in reinforced effect of face. It was found that the stability of a tunnel face can be obtained with face bolt installed longer than 1.0D (tunnel width), bolt density of about 1 bolt per every $1.5\;m^2$ (layout of grid type), and reinforcement area of $120^{\circ}$ arch area of upper section.

Steel-concrete composite box girder bridges are widely used in the construction of highway and railway bridges both domestically and abroad due to their advantages of being light weight and having a large spanning ability and very large torsional rigidity. Composite box girder bridges exhibit the effects of shear lag, restrained torsion, distortion and interface bidirectional slip under various loads during operation. As one of the most commonly used calculation tools in bridge engineering analysis, one-dimensional models offer the advantages of high calculation efficiency and strong stability. Currently, research on the one-dimensional model of composite beams mainly focuses on simulating interface longitudinal slip and the shear lag effect. There are relatively few studies on the one-dimensional model which can consider the effects of restrained torsion, distortion and interface transverse slip. Additionally, there are few studies on vehicle-bridge integrated systems where a one-dimensional model is used as a tool that only considers the calculations of natural frequency, mode and moving load conditions to study the dynamic response of composite beams. Some scholars have established a dynamic analysis model of a coupled composite beam bridge-train system, but where the composite beam is only simulated using a Euler beam or Timoshenko beam. As a result, it is impossible to comprehensively consider multiple complex force effects, such as shear lag, restrained torsion, distortion and interface bidirectional slip of composite beams. In this paper, a 27 DOF vehicle rigid body model is used to simulate train operation. A two-node 26 DOF finite beam element with composed box beams considering the effects of shear lag, restrained torsion, distortion and interface bidirectional slip is proposed. The dynamic analysis model of the coupled composite box girder bridge-train system is constructed based on the wheel-rail contact relationship of vertical close-fitting and lateral linear creeping slip. Furthermore, the accuracy of the dynamic analysis model is verified via the measured dynamic response data of a practical composite box girder bridge. Finally, the dynamic analysis model is applied in order to study the influence of various mechanical effects on the dynamic performance of the vehicle-bridge system.

A constitutive model, which can simulate the effect of principal stress rotation associated with direct simple shear test, is proposed in this study. The model is based on two mobilized planes. The plastic strains occur from the two mobilized planes, and depend on stress state, and they are added. The first plane is a plane of maximum shear stress, which rotates about the horizontal axis, and the second plane is a horizontal plane which is spatially fixed. The second plane is used to consider the effect of principal stress rotation on simple shear tests under different stress states. The soil skeleton behavior observed in drained simple shear tests is captured in the model. This constitutive model is incorporated into the dynamic coupled stress-flow finite difference program FLAC. The model is first calibrated with drained simple shear tests on loose Fraser River sand. The measured shear stress and volume change are partially induced by principal stress rotation and compared with model calculations. The model is verified by comparing predicted and measured settlements due to rigid footing resting on loose sands. Settlements predicted by the proposed model were very similar to measured settlements. Mohr-Coulomb model can not consider the effect of principal stress rotation and its prediction was only 20% of measured settlements.

It is proposed that the electromechanical relation of the conductive materials with high electrical resistance may be used to estimate the current stress of prestressing tendons. To choose the best conductive material to this end, we studied the electromechanical relations of carbon fibers and metalic heat wires experimentally. The strain of those materials was controlled instead of the stress during the experiment. It is found that the relation of carbon fibers can be modelled by a parabolic(or hyperbolic) function in the early stage of deformation. However because the relation is not consistent when it is unloaded and reload, carbon fibers are not suitable for this purpose. Metallic heat wires show a consistent linear relation during loading and unloading in the elastic deformation and are suitable for this purpose. To estimate the electromechanics relation of metallic wires, we developed a simple formula based on the rigid plasticity. We propose a new kind of prestressing tendons whose stress can be monitored. As a side result of this study, we found that the electromechanical relation of carbon fibers without epoxy matrix becomes almost linear after a certain strain.

The influence of unsubmerged resistance bodies in a channel turbulence flow on energy loss was investigated by hydraulic experiments. Square-shaped multi-piers were used for unsubmerged structure or rigid vegetation in an open channel. In experimental channel flows multi-piers were arranged in double or single row along the channel direction, and mean-concept uniform elevations were attained and measured with a set of discharges and channel slopes. Applying the experimental results to the Manning equation, the equivalent resistance coefficient n, which implicates flow resistance and energy loss due to bottom friction as well as drag, was evaluated with varying the interval of piers and the uniform water depth. And the experimentally evaluated n values were compared with the semi-theoretical formula of the equivalent resistance coefficient derived from momentum analysis including a drag interaction coefficient. From the comparisons it was found that the interaction effect of piers on flow resistance was significant for the overall energy losses in a channel flow. The n values decrease when the interval of piers in flow-direction is less than about 2.2 times of the pier width. And it was also found that the n values increase with the 2/3 power of water depth in the theoretical formula, since the drag interaction coefficient was found to be mostly dependent on the interval of piers.

This research article explores the application of Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIM-1) as a cutting-edge material for CO2 gas separation membranes in response to the escalating global concern over climate change and the imperative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The study delves into the synthesis, molecular weight control, and fabrication of PIM-1 membranes, providing comprehensive insights through various characterization techniques. The intrinsic microporosity of PIM-1, arising from its unique crosslinked and rigid structure, is harnessed for selective gas permeation, particularly of carbon dioxide. The article emphasizes the tunable chemical properties of PIM-1, allowing for customization and optimization of gas separation membranes. By controlling the molecular weight, higher molecular weight (H-PIM-1) membranes are demonstrated to exhibit superior CO2 permeability and selectivity compared to lower molecular weight counterparts (L-PIM-1). The study's findings highlight the critical role of molecular weight in tailoring PIM-1 membrane properties, contributing to the advancement of next-generation membrane technologies for efficient and selective CO2 capture-an essential step in addressing the pressing global challenge of climate change.

In this study, in order to improve the performance of the reverse osmosis membrane with high water flux and high salt rejection, a study was conducted on the evaluation of characteristics according to the curing temperature and time during various additives and interfacial polymerization. The morphology of the membrane with no additives and the membrane with additives both showed a "rigid-and-valley" structure, confirming that the polyamide layer was successfully polymerized on the surface of the porous support layer. In addition, the additive of 2-Ethyl-1,3-hexanediol (EHD) had improved hydrophilicity and water flux, which was confirmed by measuring the contact angle. Finally, a highly permeable TFC membrane with NaCl and MgSO4 salt rejection of 97.78% and 98.7% and a high water flux of 3.31 L/(m2⋅h⋅bar) was prepared.

In this study, the bearing pressure on the rubble mound of a gravity-based harbor structure with an arbitrarily shaped bottom was targeted. Assuming that the bottom of the structure is a rigid body, the rubble mound was modeled as a linear spring uniformly distributed on the bottom that resists compression only, and the bearing pressure evaluation formula was derived. It was confirmed that there were no errors in the derivation process by showing that when the bottom was square, the derived equation was converted to the equation used in the design. In addition, the validity of the derived equation was proven by examining the behavior and convergence value of the bearing pressure when an arbitrarily shaped bottom converges into a square one. In order to examine the adequacy of the method used in the current design, the end bearing pressure for the pre-designed breakwater cross-section was calculated and compared with the values in the design document. As a result, it was shown that the method used for design was not appropriate as it gave unsafe results. In particular, the difference was larger when the eccentricity of the vertical load was large, such as in the case of extreme design conditions.
