  • This paper reveals the impact of the insertion of electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures on the performance of circularly polarized (CP) patch-slot antenna with offset slot. Several optimizations are necessary to precise physical parameters in the aim to fix the resonance frequency at 3.2 GHz. The proposed antenna possesses lightweight, simplicity, low cost, and circular polarization ensured by two feeding sources to permit right-hand and left-hand circular polarization process (RHCP and LHCP). The measured results compared with simulation results of the proposed circularly polarized EBG antenna with offset slot show good band operations with –10 dB impedance bandwidths of 9.1% and 36.2% centered at 3.2 GHz, which cover weather radar, surface ship radar, and some communications satellites bands. Our investigation will confirm the simulation and experimental results of the EBG antenna involving new EBG structures.

  • In this paper, the reconfigurable annular ring slot antenna with circular polarization diversity is proposed for SDMB(Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) system. The proposed antenna consists of a ring slot with four tuning stubs. Four PIN diodes are attached to switch circular polarization diversity. By switching the diodes ON or OFF, the proposed antenna can be operated either RHCP mode or LHCP mode. The experimental result shows that the proposed antenna has an impedance bandwidth(VSWR${\leq}$2) of 570MHz(2.47-3.04GHz) at LHCP mode, an impedance bandwidth (VSWR${\leq}$2) of 560MHz(2.45-3.01GHz) at RHCP mode, a maximum gai of 3.1dBi at RHCP mode, 4.76dBi at LHCP mode. The 3dB CP bandwidth of about 100MHz at both RHCP and LHCP mode is achieved at the center frequency 2.63GHz. The proposed antenna is suitable for application such as mobile satellite communications, WLAN(Wireless Local Area Networks), and broadband wireless communication systems.

  • Dual-polarized transmission is one of the effective methods to transmit such a high speed data thanks to two independent channel leads to the orthogonal feature between RHCP (Right-Hand Circular Polarization) and LHCP (Left-Hand Circular Polarization). However, in practical case, the transmitted signal by RHCP polarized antenna in satellite can be occurred at the output port of LHCP polarized antenna in ground station, vice versa. XPD (Cross-Polarization Discrimination) is the ratio of the signal level at the output of a receiving antenna that is nominally co-polarized to the transmitting antenna to the output of a receiving antenna of the same gain but nominally orthogonally polarized to the transmitting antenna. In this paper, the detailed estimation of XPD within the interface between satellite and ground station is written and the influence of XPD to link performance is also described.

  • In this paper, a dual polarization patch antenna operates at the wide bandwidth of 1.525GHz~1.665GHz was designed and fabricated. To obtain the wide bandwidth and high gain, increased height of air floor from GND was applied, and to get wide band axial ratio and high gain, parasitic patch was applied. The simulation and measurement showed good agreements, the VSWR was less than 1.9 at the frequency bandwidth, the return loss was less than -10dB, and the LHCP(Left Hand Circular Polarization) and RHCP(Right Hand Circular Polarization) isolation was less than -13dB at the frequency bandwidth.

  • A new feeding method for the circular polarization (CP) dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is proposed in this letter. Two orthogonal modes (${TE^x}_{{\delta}11}$, ${TE^y}_{1{\delta}1$) of the rectangular DRA are excited by a $90^{\circ}$ phase difference of the differential and common modes currents of the proposed feeding structure. To demonstrate the good CP performance of the proposed method, a right-hand CP DRA for a global positioning system was designed. The impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna for $S_{11}$ < -10 dB and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth are about 5.4% and 1.95% at 1.57 GHz, respectively.

  • TIn this paper, it is designed the polarization selective antenna for UHF RFID system. The proposed antenna is consist of microstrip patch antenna with dual feeding and two SPDT switches and a SP4T switch and 3dB hybrid coupler. Through control of voltage of switches, the proposed reader antenna can select horizontally linear polarization, vertically linear polarization, left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right hand circular polarization (RHCP). The proposed reader antenna satisfied 2:1 VSWR at 902MHz~928MHz. and it has under 3dB AR(axial ratio). Peak gain of antenna is 7.71dBi, 7.55dBi with linear polarization and 7.31dBic, 7.81dBic with circular polarization at x-y plane. Also Axial ratio of antenna is 2.01~2.83dB and 2.02~2.60dB respectively. It is satisfied 3dB axial ratio.

  • This study proposes a soil moisture retrieval method from ground reflection signals received by Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna modules consisting of an up-looking (UP) right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) and two down-looking (DW) RHCP and left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) signals. Field experiments at four different surface types (asphalt, grassland, dry soil, and moist soil) revealed that the DW RHCP and LHCP signals are affected by antenna height and multipath interference signals. The strength differences between the DW LHCP and UP RHCP signals were in good agreement with the DW LHCP signals. Methodologically, this study applied a spectrum analysis to the detrended surface-reflected signals for RHCP and LHCP. The study indicated that the down-looking antenna exhibited greater sensitivity to reflected GPS signals than the up-looking antenna. We demonstrated the feasibility of estimating soil moisture using GPS signals, by comparing LHCP signals received by the down-looking antenna with theoretical values. This study presents a novel method for estimating soil moisture in vegetated areas, leveraging the advantage of cross-polarization comparisons to achieve stronger signal strength than single-polarization reflection signals. With further research, including long-term observations and detailed analysis, the proposed method has the potential to enhance performance significantly.

  • A novel reconfigurable microstrip patch antenna with frequency and polarization diversities is proposed. A U-slot is incorporated into a square patch, and a PIN diode is utilized to switch the slot on and off, which realizes the frequency diversity characteristic. The polarization diversities among linear polarization (LP), right-hand circular polarization (RHCP), and left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) are also obtained by switching three PIN diodes on the slot and the truncating corners of a square patch on and off. The antenna design and experimental results are presented.

  • COMS will transmit its observed data, Sensor Data, through L-Band with linear polarization. To avoid link loss caused by polarization discrepancy between satellite and SOC DATS, the L-Band antenna at SOC DATS should be linearly polarized. However, SOC DATS is supposed to share single antenna with SOC TTC, so the antenna should be circularly polarized. To cope with about 3dB loss, SOC DATS is designed to receive Sensor Data through two orthogonal circular polarizations, RHCP (Right-Hand Circular Polarization) and LHCP (Left-Hand Circular Polarization). Eventually, SOC DATS can obtain 2.6dB of combining gain through diversity combiner in MODEM/BB. This paper presents the verification on the diversity combining of SOC DATS with test configuration and results in depth.
