  • This study was done to develop environmental risk assessments and a biosafety guide for insect-resistant genetically modified rice at a LMO (Living Modified Organism) isolation field. In the LMO quarantine area of Kyungpook National University, the species diversities and population densities of non-target insects found on insect-resistant genetically modified rice (Bt-9) resistant to Cnaphalocrocis medinalis and on non-GM rices (Dongjin and Ilmi) were investigated. The Bt-9 event was therefore evaluated under field conditions to detect possible impacts on the above ground insects and spiders. The study compared transgenic rice and two non-GM reference rices, Ilmi and Dongjin, at Gunwi in Southern Korea in 2016. Each rice was grown on three $18m^2$ plots with a randomized block design. A total of 4,243 individuals from 43 families and 9 orders were collected from the LMO isolation field. In the three types of rice fields, a total of 1,467 individuals from the insect-resistant genetically modified rice (Bt-9), 1,423 individuals from the Ilmi, and 1,353 individuals from the Dongjin were collected, respectively. There was no difference between the population densities of the non-target insect pests, natural enemies and other insects on the insect-resistant genetically modified rice (Bt-9) and non-GM rices. These results provide the diversity and population density of non-target insects for an environment risk assessment survey on insect-resistant genetically modified rice and could be used as a guideline to make a biosafety assessment method for genetically modified crops.

  • This experiment was conducted at the IRRI experimental fram, Los Banos, Philippines to determine the effects of planting methods on lodging in rice, and to determine plant characteristics that induce lodging. Moderately lodging-susceptible IR36, lodging-susceptible line IR21820-3-2-2-3 and lodging-resistant IR8 and IR64 were tested. Except in IR8, lodging resistance of all test rices was higher when transplanted than when broadcast-seeded. Transplanted rices yielded higher than did broadcast-seeded rices except with broadcast-seeded IR8. Yield reduction due to lodging varied from 0.6 to 1.5 t/ha. Yield components and vegetative characteristics did not differ significantly between planting methods. However, higher culm K content was observed in transplanted rice, and it consequently increased lodging resistance. Phosphorus ans Si contents did not significantly affect culm strength.

  • It was unusual crop weather for 1998 and 1999 compared with normal in Korea. The consecutive days of the optimum ripening period for rice plant that had daily mean temperature 21-23C for 40 days after heading, increased with long anomalies in 1998-99. The air temperature during ripening period was much higher than the optimum temperature and lower sunshine hour than normal in the local adaptability tests of newly developed rice lines during those years. In response of rice cultivation to warming and cloudy weather during crop season, the yield shall be decreased. Most scientists agree that the rate of heating is accelerating and temperature change could become increasingly disruptive. Weather patterns should also become more erratic. Agrometeorologists could be analyzed yearly variations of temperature, sunshine hour and rainfall pattern focused on transient agroclimate change for last a decade. Rice agronomists could be established taking advantage of real time agricultural meteorology information system for fertilization, irrigation, pest control and harvest. Also they could be analyzed the characteristics of flowering response of the recommended and newly bred rice cultivars for suitable cropping plan such as cultural patterns and sowing or transplanting date. Rice breeders should be deeply considered introducing the characteristics of basic vegetative type of flowering response like Tonsil rices as prospective rice cultivars corresponding to global warming because of the rices needed higher temperature at ripening stage than Japonica rices, photoperiod sensitive and thermo-sensitive ecotypes

  • Initial adsorption rates of brown and milled rices at relative humidity of $57{\sim}86%$ were examined at $25^{\circ}C$. The adsorption equations at RH 75% for brown and milled rices were expressed as: log($d{\omega}/dt{\times}10^{3}$)=-0.8108 log t+3.0347 and log($d{\omega}/dt{\times}10^{3}$)=0.8451 log t+3.0087, respectively, where ${\omega}$ is the moisture content(%, db) and t is storage time (hr). The moisture content at RH $57{\sim}86%$ could be calculated from above equations using a conversion factor for each RH.
