In order to evaluate the effect of salinity content in soil on chemical composition and productivity of rice which is suitable for the reclaimed saline paddy field, yield components and yield were investigated in 2,000 at reclaimed paddy field of Kwangyang bay in Korea. Heading date was early with Aug. 15 in soft salinification of 0.1 percent and late with from Aug. 20 to Aug. 25 in heavy salinification of 0.4 and 0.8 percent. Brown rice yield was highest in soft saliniflcation of 0.1 percent with 599kg/10a and was decreased with from 568kg/10a to 446kg/10a in heavy salinification of 0.4 and 0.8 percent. The correlation coefficient between brown rice yield and content of soil chemical composition, on organic matter, phosphate, nitrogen, potassium, calcium, and magnesium showed highly positive correlation and was shown negative correlation with pH meter. Judging from the results reported above, optimum salinification of saline paddy field seemed to be 0.1 percent.
Cyanobacteria are present abundantly in rice fields and are important in helping to maintain rice fields fertility through nitrogen fixation. Many rice fields soil contain a high density of cyanobactera, and over 50% of cyanobacterial genera that are in existence in rice paddy fields are heterocystous filamentous forms. A total of 142 isolates of heterocystous filamentous cyanobacteria were screened from 100 soil samples taken from rice paddy fields in 10 different locations across Korea, classified according to their morphological characteristics under light microscopy, and their susceptibly to fungicides examined. The collected blue-green alga were classified into a total of 14 genera, including seven genera of filamentous cyanobacteria and seven genera of nonfilamentous cyanobacteria. In particular, 142 heterocystous filamentous cyanobacteria were isolated and classified into six genera, including Anabaena, Nostoc, Calothrix, Cylindrospermum, Nodularia, Scytomena, and Tolypotrix. Yet, over 90% of the heterocystous filamentous cyanobacteria isolated from the rice paddy fields belonged to two genera: Anabaena and Nostoc. The response of 129 $N_2-fixing$ cyanobacterial isolates, 53 Anabaena and 76 Nostoc, to 10 fungicides was then investigated. The results showed that the Nostoc spp. were more tolerant of the ten tested fungicides than the Anabaena spp., and among the ten tested fungicides, benomyl showed the highest acute toxicity to Anabaena spp. and Nostoc spp. In conclusion, although benomyl is a very useful agent to control phytopathogenic fungi, the application of this fungicide to rice fields should be considered because of its toxicity to the heterocystous filamentous cyanobacteria.

To develop a monitoring method for soil microbial communities in rice paddy fields, we used terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) to compare soil bacterial community structure in rice paddy fields experiencing different management practices: organic practices, conventional practices without a winter barley rotation, and conventional practices with a winter barley rotation. Restriction fragment length profiles from soils farmed using organic practices showed very different patterns from those from conventional practices with and without barley rotation. In principal component analyses, restriction fragment profiles in organic practice samples were clearly separated from those in conventional practice samples, while principal component analysis did not show a clear separation for soils farmed using conventional practices with and without barley rotation. The cluster analysis showed that the bacterial species compositions of soils under organic practices were significantly different from those under conventional practices at the 95% level, but soils under conventional practice with and without barley rotation did not significantly differ. Although the loadings from principal component analyses and the Ribosomal DNA Project II databases suggested candidate species important for soils under organic farming practices, it was very difficult to get detailed bacterial species information from terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism. Rank-abundance diagrams and diversity indices showed that restriction fragment peaks under organic farming showed high Pielou's Evenness Index and the reciprocal of Simpson Index suggesting high bacterial diversity in organically farmed soils.
Since ${NO_3}^-$ is amore favorable electron acceptor than Fe, high ${NO_3}^-$ loads function as a redox buffer limiting the reduction of Fe and following release of ${PO_4}^{3-}$ in flooded paddy soil. The effect ${NO_3}^-$ loaded through irrigation water on Fe reduction and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ release in paddy soil was investigated. Pot experiment was conducted where irrigation water containing 5 or 10 mg N $L^{-1}$ of ${NO_3}^-$ was continuously applied at 1 cm $day^{-1}$, and changes of ${NO_3}^-$, $Fe^{2+}$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ concentrations in soil solution at 5 and 10 cm depths beneath the soil surface were monitored as a function of time. Irrigation of rice paddy with water containing 5 mg N $L^{-1}$ of ${NO_3}^-$ led to reduced release of $Fe^{2+}$ and prevented solubilization of P at 5 cm depth beneath the soil surface. And application of irrigation water containing 10 mg N $L^{-1}$ of ${NO_3}^-$ could further suppress Fe reduction and solubilization of P through 10 cm depth soil layer beneath the surface. These results suggest that the introduction of high level ${NO_3}^-$ with irrigation water in rice paddy can strongly limit Fe reduction and P solubilization in root zone soil layer in addition to the excessive supply of N to rice plants.
Field experiments were conducted on Jeonbug series (Fine silty, mesic family of Aeric Fluventic Haplaquepts), to study the effect of split application of N fertilizer in combination with rice straw on N use efficiency of dry-soil-direct seeded paddy rice. Treatments involved conventional application of N (in three splits; 40% at planting, 30% at five leaf stage and at heading stage) without rice straw, all basal application of N with straw application (5000 kg/ha), N application in two splits (70% at planting and 30% at heading stage) with rice straw application and N application in three splits (40% at planting, 30% at five leaf stage, 30% at heading stage) with application of rice straw. There was Zero N plot too for the estimation of N use efficiency. Seeding was done on dry soil and the filed was flooded 32 days after seeding. The fertilizer application rates were 160, 70, and 80 kg/ha of N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$, respectively. The experiment was conducted for two years, in the same filed. The apparent use efficiency of fertilizer N by rice tended to be higher under the application of rice straw when N was applied in three splits. This, however, did not increase the yield of rice significantly. Even under the application of rice straw, the apparent N use efficiency was lower when N fertilizer was applied in one dose at the planting and in two splits. The lower N use efficiency in these cases, did not yield of rice significantly. The periodical analysis of mineral N in the soil suggested that higher mineral N in the soil at the early stages was responsible for the lower apparent N use efficiency.
The Codex Committee of Contaminants in Food (CCCF) has been discussing a new standard for arsenic (As) in rice since 2010 and a code of practice for the prevention and reduction of As contamination in rice since 2013. Therefore, our current studies focus on setting a maximum level of As in rice and paddy soil by considering bioavailability in the remediation of As contaminated soils. This study aimed to select an appropriate single chemical extractant for evaluating the mobility of As in paddy soil and the bioavailability of As to rice. Nine different extractants, such as deionized water, 0.01 M $Ca(NO_3)_2$, 0.1 M HCl, 0.2 M $C_6H_8O_7$, 0.43 M $HNO_3$, 0.43 M $CH_3COOH$, 0.5 M $KH_2PO_4$, 1 M HCl, and 1 M $NH_4NO_3$ were used in this study. Total As content in soil was also determined after aqua regia digestion. The As extractability of the was in the order of: Aqua regia > 1 M HCl > 0.5 M $KH_2PO_4$ > 0.43 M $HNO_3$ > 0.2 M $C_6H_8O_7$ > 0.1 M HCl > 0.43 M $CH_3COOH$ > deionized water > 1 M $NH_4NO_3$ > 0.01 M $Ca(NO_3)_2$. Correlation between soil extractants and As content in rice was in the order of : deionized water > 0.01 M $Ca(NO_3)_2$ > 0.43 M $CH_3COOH$ > 0.1 M HCl > 0.5 M $KH_2PO_4$ > 1 M $NH_4NO_3$ > 0.2 M $C_6H_8O_7$ > 0.43 M $HNO_3$ > 1M HCl > Aqua regia. BCF (bioconcentration factor) according to extractants was in the order of : 0.01M $Ca(NO_3)_2$ > 1 M $NH_4NO_3$ > deionized water > 0.43 M $CH_3COOH$ > 0.1 M HCl > 0.43 M $HNO_3$ > 0.2 M $C_6H_8O_7$ > 0.5 M $KH_2PO_4$ > 1 M HCl > Aqua regia. Therefore, 0.01 M $Ca(NO_3)_2$ ($r=0.78^{**}$) was proven to have the greatest potential for predicting As bioavailability in soil with higher correlation between As in rice and the extractant.
Urea, which is the major nitrogenous fertilizer used in Korea, has been used inefficiently in direct-seeding on dry soil by farmers. This study was conducted to investigate changes in concentrations of basal N within soil layers and its loss during early stage of rice growth. Urea fertilizer was applied in the rates of 7, 5.25, 3.5, 1.75, 0kg- N /10a under direct-seeded rice in dry paddy soil. The concentrations of ammonium and nitrate were determined in soil samples with different depths during period from seeding to the 3rd leaf stage. Futhermore, N leaching was measured in lysimeter designed with pot in greenhouse. ${NH_4}^+ \; and\; {NO_3}^-$ adsorption by soil increased with increasing concentration of added urea and decreased as deeper in soil layers. ${NH_4}^+$ concentration reached its peak at 7 days after urea application (DAA) and disappeared almostly at 14 DAA. ${NO_3}^-$ reached its peak at 10 DAA and decreased slowly until 14 DAA. ${NO_3}^-$N leaching started next day after urea application and completed until 11 DAA. We concluded that most of basal N applied to direct-seeded paddy was lost by leaching and not useful for rice plant which was in stage of germination. It is urgent need to develop new nitrogen application method for direct-seeding rice on dry soil.

To assess the relationship between Cd fraction in paddy soils and Cd in polished rice, soils and rice were analyzed at the 3 Cd contaminated paddy fields near closed mines. Major Cd fractions of A field were organically bound (62.6%) and Fe-Mn oxide bound (25.3%) forms. In case of B field, major Cd fractions of B1 field were carbonate bound (46.3%) and Fe-Mn oxide bound (31.6%) form whereas B2 field were residual (54.3%) and carbonate bound (21.8%) form, respectively. It showed a huge difference of Cd fraction each other. 0.1M HCl extractable Cd in soil was positively correlated with Cd in rice. Specially, the ratios of 0.1M HCl extractable Cd against total Cd content in soils were 13.7%, 2.6%, and 0.45% in A, B1, and B2 fields, respectively. These ratio were largely affected with Cd uptake to rice grain. Also, exchangable, Fe-Mn oxide bound, and carbonate bound form, which are partially bioavailable Cd fraction to the plant, were positively correlated with Cd in rice while organically bound and residual form was not correlated. Multiple regression equation was developed with Rice Cd = -0.02861 + 0.07456 FR 1(exchangeable) + 0.00252 FR 2(carbonate bound) + 0.001075 FR 3(Fe Mn oxide bound) - 0.00095 FR 4(organically bound) - 0.00348 FR 5(residual) ($R^2=0.7893^{***}$) considering Cd fraction in soils.
The installation of subsurface drainage equipment is required for generalized use of paddy field and to improve soil productivity. The internal drainage of paddy field has improved root condition from the increasing of oxygen supply and removing noxious elements. This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of fertilization and drainage system on soil characteristic, growth and lodging trait of rice in paddy soil. A subsurface drainage system was installed a depth of 0.8m. Three fertilizer treatments were applied : 1) Conventional fertilized plot, 2) Controlled-release fertilized plot, 3) No-fertilized plot. In conventional plot, 110 kg N (as urea 46%), 45 kg P (as fused phosphate 20%) and 57 kg K (as potassium chloride 60%) per hectare fertilizers were applied. Controlled-release fertilizer was applied by 70% of N compared to the conventional plot. During the rice cropping, the water depth decrease was two times higher in subsurface drainage(SD) plot than non-drained(ND) plot. After harvesting of rice, the bulk density of sub-soil(10-20cm depth) was lower in SD plot than ND plot. After the experiment, the surface soil pH was high at SD plot but sub-soil was high at ND plot. Organic matter content was higher in all soil layer for SD plot than fro ND plot. Available $P_2O_5$ was not different between SD and ND plot for surface soil, but was high for SD plot for sub soil. The $NH_4{^+}-N$ content of soil, shoot dry matter, total nitrogen and $K_2O$ of rice plant were greater after panicle formation stage in SD plot. Total nitrogen content, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ of rice root were high in SD plot after heading. Though the gravity center and 3rd internode length were greater, pulling force of rice root was higher in SD plot than ND plot. Rice yield in SD plot were low at conventional and controlled-release fertilized plot because of the greater field lodging, but yield in SD plot was high at no-fertilized plot. This study indicates that the fertilization level should be decrease on subsurface drainage system for rice cropping.
Differential interferometric phases from JERS-1 Lband data sets show spatial variation of path-length ranging from a few mm to several cm. The variation may be caused by changes in soil moisture contents, i.e. variation of penetration depth and the swelling of soils. Although the amount of total effect caused by soil moisture is not measurable, it is clear that the soil moisture according to precipitation is another factor to be considered in DInSAR analysis. We also discuss DInSAR characteristics in a rice paddy according to irrigation conditions, and discrimination of hydrological features such as stream channels and watershed boundaries by applying DInSAR technique.
