As in many other country, the use of organic matter in Korea has long history. Farmers understand the value of organic matter as the source of plant nutrient and soil improving agent in general. Since 50 years ago, the sources of organic matter in paddy soils were compost, rice and barly straw, green manure, animal waste, fish and beancake, etc.. Application of green manures such as vetch and chinese milk vetch showed no significant effect on the yield of brown rice in paddy soil. On the other hand, the effects of compost and rice straw showed more significant on the yield of brown rice in paddy soil. Application of rice straw in rice cultivation is commonly made at different times between harvest, early spring and several weeks before transplanting. Considering the suitable paddy soil for application of rice straw under well to moderately well drained soil, the yield was pronounced more than poorly drained soil. Based on laboratory and field experimants, application of rice straw promoted the decrease of oxidation-reduction potential in well to moderately well drained soil. This results to be enhanced the release of some mineral nutrients,. such as potassium, calcium, silicon, and increase of availability of soil phosphorus. In the field experiments, results obtained from nitrogen fraction on the immobilization-mineralization of the tracer nitrogen applied in paddy soil, the amount and index of organic nitrogen incoporated in soil was more pronounced in rice straw application than control. Rice straw and its transformation products incoporated in the soil, provided the inflow of energy necessary to maintain heterotrophic microbes activities. Rice straw and its transformation products, especially soluble carbohydrate, enhanced the population of free-living heterotrophic $N_2$ - fixing microbes. Moreover, rice straw and its transformation products in paddy soil, enhanced the activities of soil enzymes such as dehydrogenase and urease.
Field experimental study was performed to examine characteristics of nutrient export from paddy rice fields with irrigation practices. Experimental fields with surface-water and ground-water irrigation were monitored and analyzed during rice culture period. The water balance showed that outflow generally balanced the inflow showing that about half (58~68%) of total outflow was lost by surface drainage. Water and nutrient export are more in surface-water irrigation paddy than in ground-water irrigation paddy. The reasons might be more irrigation water available and easy to use in surface-water irrigation. If irrigation water reduced, it could result in reduction of nutrient export in paddy rice fields, which can save water and protect water quality. However, deviation from conventional standard practices might affect the rice yield and further investigations are necessary.

The aim of this study was to bring light on the effect of permeability to yield weight of paddy rice on the compressed soil. a) The percolation volume during the growth of paddy rice reduced, while the degree of compression on soil column increased and varied by the evaporation and absorption volumn. b) The percolation volume in the natural soil column was notably low compared with that of in the artificial and had little influence to the variation of permeabilty by compression. c) The results in growth of paddy rice were best on the section of low compression and the yield weight reduced, while the degree of compression on the soil column increased. d) The relationship between the yield weight and percolation volumn, under the condition when percolation volume is 1mm/day, had little difference in the yield weight but immediately reduced under $0.5{\sim}1.0mm/day$. The consequences of investigation are not so perfect, but have done my best to get some new data for effect on additional yield by inquiring into influences of permeability to the yield weight of paddy rice on compressed paddy field. I will have a great pleasure if treatise helps investigaters or the men of affairs in this field.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a rubber-crawler type vehicle as a traveling device for harvesting water-dropwort cultivated in water contained paddy rice field in winter season. Methods: A commercial rubber-crawler type vehicle was used to investigate application of rubber crawler to the paddy rice field as preliminary test. As the result of the preliminary test, a both prototype traveling device with rubber crawlers for a water-dropwort harvest was designed with inclination of $45^{\circ}$ at the front-end and rear-end of crawler under the basic water depth of 0.6 m in the paddy rice field. The device was fabricated and attached to the experimental harvesting test devices on the front of the prototype vehicle. The size of the prototype crawler vehicle with a harvesting part is $2,800{\times}1,460{\times}1,040 $ (mm) ($L{\times}W{\times}H$) with weight of 9.21 kN (maximum). Sizes of the crawler of prototype vehicle are ground contact length of 900 mm, width of 180 mm, height of 1,070 mm and distance between center to center of crawlers of 720 mm. The side-overturn angle of the prototype was $26.4^{\circ}$. Results: Driving performance of the prototype vehicle in water contained paddy field were good at both forward and reverse (backward) directions as weights were applied. The drawbar pull and the maximum sinking depth of the prototype vehicle were 3.5 kN and 0.13 m respectively at water depth of 0.5 m, when the weight and bearing capacity of the prototype rubber crawler in the paddy field were 8.51 kN and 26.3 $kN/m^2$, respectively. Conclusions: Results of the driving test performance of the prototype crawler in paddy rice field at the water depth of 0.5 m were satisfactory. The prototype had enough drawbar pull and driving ability in the deep water contained paddy field.
Relationship between yield and palatability value measured by vice taster among 9 rice varieties was investigated to obtain basic information for production of rice with high quality in reclaimed paddy field. The rice yield showed a highly negative correlation with palatability value of milled rice (r=-0.49$^{**}$). The varieties of high palatability value tend to show low yield. The protein content of milled rice grown in reclaimed paddy field was higher than 7.5% mainly due to heavy fertilization of nitrogen and irrigation of eutrophicated water, The rice varieties such as Daeanbyeo, Jinpumbyeo and Sindongjinbyeo were recommendable only for higher yield, but in view of rice quality, Kwanganbyeo, Surabyeo and Nampyoengbyeo were more recommendable because of their lower protein content and higher palatability value.e.
This study was carried out to investigate the occurrence of bug species around bank and paddy field and its peckey rice in four different districts of Kyonggi Area, and then to observe the distribution of bug species causing pee key rice. The results obtained were as follows; Thirty one bug species were collected around bank and its dominant species were Eyarcoris parvus, Nabis stenoferus, Stictopleurus crassicornis and each constituted 35.9, 20.2, 6.5 %, respectively. On the other hand, 11 bug species in paddy field were identified and the dominant species among them were Nabis stenoferus, Adelphocoris triannulatus, Eyarcoris parvus. Pee key rice induced by the infestation of bug species was 34.7% in Eyarcoris parvus and 2.7% in Aeschynteles maculatus. The occurrence of pecked rice injured by bugs was severe on milk ripe stage through heading stage to yellow ripe stage of rice growth period. Peckey rice among rice varieties was higher in Sobaekbyeo, extremely early mature variety, and Taebaegbyeo, early mature variety. The occurrence of peckey rice was higher in mountainous area such as Pocheon culturing early mature rice varieties.
The Japonica cultivar 'Janganbyeo' was cultivated and about half of paddy field was totally lodged at 30 days after heading. Both lodged paddy and unlodged paddy were harvested at intervals. The lodged paddy and brown rice did not show any signs of viviparity until the $4^{th}$ day of lodging. The activities of $\alpha$-amylase, diastase, and lipase of lodged paddy and brown rice began to increase on the $2^{nd}$ day of lodging and then increased slowly afterwards. The activities of protease and phytase of lodged paddy and brown rice reached the maximum values on the $2^{nd}$ day and then decreased until the final day of lodging. In contrast, unlodged paddy and brown rice showed relatively small increase in viviparity and in activities of $\alpha$-amylase, diastase, protease, lipase, and phytase. Especially, activities of diastase and lipase were observed even in unlodged paddy and brown rice.
This study was carried out to compare the growth characteristics and feed values of the whole crop silage rice from paddy field and reclaimed paddy field. The heading dates of tested varieties was August 8 to August 30 in the paddy field, 1~2 days later than the reclaimed paddy field's August 6 to August 29. Plant height was in the range of 105~135 cm in paddy field, and 97~126 cm in reclaimed paddy field, respectively. The plant height of Mokyang was tallest in the paddy field, but Suwon 544 was tallest in the reclaimed paddy field. The number of tiller per plant of Nokyang was largest in the paddy field. Dry matter (DM) yield of whole crop rice ranged from 15.26 to $23.24MT\;ha^{-1}$ in the paddy field and 11.94 to $18.89MT\;ha^{-1}$ in the reclaimed paddy field. The highest DM yield in both fields was attained by Mokwoo. Comparing with the paddy field, the reclaimed paddy field achieved 78~84% in the DM yield. The crude protein content of varieties was 8.5 to 11.6% in the reclaimed tidal land and 6.7~8.7% in the paddy field. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of varieties in both fields ranged from 31.2 to 55.5%. Suwon 544 recorded the highest NDF contents in both fields. All varieties did not show any significant difference in acidic detergent fiber (ADF) which had values ranging from 22.3 to 33.2%. Total digestion nutrient (TDN) was more than 60% overall in both fields. Regarding TDN yield, Mokwoo recorded $16.54MT\;ha^{-1}$ in reclaimed tidal land and $12.69MT\;ha^{-1}$ in the paddy field, which showed the highest figure among the varieties. These results suggest the feasibility for cultivation of the whole crop silage rice in reclaimed paddy field, which showed 80% of the yield compared to paddy field, and implied that Mokwoo would show the most excellent yield and feed value.

Paddy rice is semi-tropical crop and requires warmirrigation water. If mean water temperature at the water source during the growing period is below 18$^{\circ}C$, sime kinds of water warming mechanism should be taken. In this study irrigation water temperature is measured and preventive measures to cold water damage on paddy rice are suggested. Field observations were performed at 100ha field area downtream of the Unmoon reservoir during the growing season of 1997. Land use, canal system, water temperature at irrigation canals. reservoir, and paddy fields were observed. In addition, growth and yield of the rice at selected plots were observed. Accordingly to the record, cold water damage occurred in this area due to the cold irrigation water supply in 1996. It did not occur because of the effective irrigation water management practice in 1997. However, several preventive measures such as pontoon intake system, using existing weir and construting a new warming pond, are suggested to prevent cold water damage in the future. If a new warming pond is construted to raise irrigation water temperature by 2 $^{\circ}C$, a pond area of 2.94 ha is required.
