Using ray-optics code incorporated with three-dimensional PDP cell simulation, we have analysed the energy flow in the PDP cell from the electric power input to the visible light output. Also, the visible light output profile and viewing angle distribution were obtained. We applied our code to the analysis of the barrier rib height effect on the visible light luminance and efficiency of the sustaining discharge. Although cells with higher barrier rib generate more VUV photons, less ratio of visible photons are emitted toward front panel due to the shadow effect. Thus, there exists optimal barrier rib height giving the highest visible luminance and efficiency. This kind of code can be a powerful tool in designing cell geometry.

The present study investigates the effects of bleed flow on heat/mass transfer and pressure drop in a rotating channel with transverse rib turbulators. The hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) of the square channel is 40.0 mm. The bleed holes are located between the rib turburators on leading surface and the hole diameter (d) is 4.5 mm. The square rib turbulators are installed on both leading and trailing surfaces. The rib-to-rib pitch is 10.0 times of the rib height (e) and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio ($e/D_h$) is 0.055. The tests were conducted at various rotation numbers (0, 0.2, 0.4), while the Reynolds number and the rate of bleed flow to main flow were fixed at 10,000 and 10%, respectively. The results suggest that the heat/mass transfer characteristics in the internal cooling passage are influenced by rib turbulators, bleed flow and the Cariolis force induced by rotation. For the rotating ribbed passage with bleed flow, the heat/mass transfer on the leading surface is hardly affected by bleed flow, but that on the trailing surface decreases due to the diminution of main flow. The results also show that the friction factor decreases with the bleed flow.

This paper reports a result of numerical heat transfer analysis for heat spreader with various ribs. Four different ribs are compared in this study. In general, the heat transfer on a vertical plate is enhanced when a rib is attached as the surface area increases, and the growth of the boundary layer is interrupted. However, for a low flow less than 0.1m/s, it is observed that the heat transfer is sensitive to the height of a rib: it decreases as the height increases. Among the four ribs, the H-shaped rib showed better performance than other ribs.

The present study has been conducted to investigate the effect of discrete ribs and rotation on heat/mass transfer characteristics in a two-pass square duct with $90^{\circ}-rib$ turbulators. The rib turbulator has a square cross section of 1.5 mm. The rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio $({e/D_{h})$ is 0.056, and the rib pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 10. The gap width is the same as the rib height. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.2 while Reynolds number is fixed to 10,000. In a stationary duct, the heat/mass transfer on the surfaces with discrete ribs is enhanced because the gap flow promotes local turbulence and flow mixing near the ribbed surface. In a rotating duct, the gap flow affects differently the heat/mass transfer on leading and trailing surfaces with discrete ribs. On the leading surface of the first pass, heat/mass transfer is increased due to the gap flow. On the trailing surface of the first pass, however, heat/mass transfer is decreased because the gap flow disturbs reattachment of main flow. The phenomenon, that is, the difference of heat transfer between the leading and the trailing surfaces is distinctly presented by rotation.

A numerical optimization procedure for the shape of three-dimensional channel with angled ribs mounted on one of the walls to enhance turbulent heat transfer is presented. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analyses of flow and heat transfer. SST turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for local heat transfer rate show reasonable agreements with experimental data. The pitch-to-height ratio of the rib and rib height-to-channel height ratio are set to be 9.0 and 0.1, respectively, and width-to-rib height ratio and attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat-transfer and friction-loss related terms with weighting factor. Full-factorial experimental design method is used to determine the data points. Optimum shapes of the channel have been obtained in the range from 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.

The present study investigates heat/mass transfer characteristics in a rotating two-pass duct for smooth and ribbed surfaces. The duct has an aspect ratio of 0.5 and a hydraulic diameter of 26.67 mm. 70-angled rib turbulators are attached on the leading and trailing sides of the duct in parallel and cross arrangements. The pitch-to-rib height ratio is 7.5 and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio is 0.075. The Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter is constant at 10,000 and the rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.2 Detailed local heat/mass transfer coefficients are measured using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The results show that the secondary flows generated by the $180^{\circ}-turn$, rib turbulators, and duct rotation affect the wall heat/mass transfer distribution significantly, As the duct rotates, the rotaion-induced Coriolis force deflects the main flow and results in differences on the heat/mass transfer distribution between the leading and trailing surfaces. Its effects become more dominant as the rotaion number increases. Discussions are presented describing how the rib configuration and the rotaion speed affect the flow patterns and local heat/mass transfer in the duct.
The present study investigates the heat transfer characteristics of a triangular channel. Three different rib configurations are tested. The ribs are installed on two sides of the channel. The rib height (e) to channel hydraulic diameter is 0.079 and the rib-to-rib pitch (p) is 8 times of the rib height. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.1 while the Reynolds number is fixed at 10,000. The copper blocks with heaters are installed on the channel walls to measure the regionally averaged heat transfer coefficients. For the stationary $45^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$ ribbed channels, a pair of counter rotating vortices is induced by the angled rib arrangements, and high heat transfer coefficients are obtained on the regions near the inner wall for the $45^{\circ}$ ribbed channel and near the leading edge for the $90^{\circ}$ ribbed channel. The heat transfer coefficients of angled ribbed channels are changed little with rotation, whereas those of the transverse ribbed channel are changed significantly with rotation.

The effect of different rib geometries such as V-shaped continuous (case A), parallel broken (case B), and V-shaped broken (case C) ribs on local heat transfer distributions and pressure drops in a divergent channel with $30^{\circ}$ inclined ribs on one wall or two walls was investigated for Reynolds numbers from 22,000 to 75,000. Top and bottom walls were insulated; two side walls were uniformly heated in the divergent channel. Heated walls were composed of 10 isolated coper sections and length-to-outlet hydraulic diameter ratio of 10. Rib height-to-outlet hydraulic diameter ratio was 0.1, and rib pitch-to-height ratio equaled 10. Results revealed that V-shaped continuous rib (case A) produced approximately 1.4 times higher average Nussselt number than in the parallel broken rib (case B), and V-shaped broken rib (case C) in the channel with two ribbed walls at Re = 54,000.

Effects of various parameters on bond property between reinforcing bar and concrete are investigated in many researchers, and various study is on going to improve the bond strength. Properties of interface between reinforcement and concrete is important role in bond property. This study analyzed the interfacial bond mechanism between deformed bar and concrete by finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the effect of rib shape. The FEA model in this study is simplified 2D plane stress model. The variables of analysis are selected by rib angle, rib height, rib spacing and relative rib area. From the results of analysis, reinforcing bars with rib angle $30{\sim}60^{\circ}$ showed better bond strength than the others. Bond strength ratio following to the rib height is proportionally increased up to the $0.12d_b$, but rib spacing has little effect on bond strength. The results also indicated that relative rib area can be efficiently represented the properties of deformed shape in reinforcing bars, and zigzagged rib height shape showed excellent bond strength increase.
The present study numerically simulates the flow and heat transfer characteristics of rib-induced secondary flow in a cooling channel with staggered V-shaped ribs, extruded on both walls. The rib pitch-to-height ratio (p/h) varies from 2.8 to 10 with the rib-height-to-hydraulic diameter ration ($h/D_h$) of 0.07 and the Reynolds number of 50,000. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence model. Computational results show that complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the duct due to the snaking flow in the streamwise direction for all tested cases. In the range of p/h=5 to 10 the staggered V-shaped rib gives about 3 times higher heat transfer augmentation than the reference smooth channel with high heat transfer on both front side and the area around the leading edge of the ribs, while the former cases give about 2.5 times higher streamwise pressure drop than the latter ones. Consequently, for the thermal performances, based on the equal pumping power condition, the staggered ones give about 2 times higher values than the latter ones with more uniform heat transfer distribution.
