Brown patch caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IB occurred on Kentucky bluegrass during late May through early October 2010 at golf course in Gyeongbuk Province, Korea. Disease symptoms on the turfgrass for spring season were leaf blights dying from the leaf tip, which appeared patches of brown color in the field. However, it appeared patches of dark brown color or gray brown color in fall. The fungus (B-7 isolate) of brown patch was isolated from the diseased leaf tissue and cultured on potato-dextrose agar (PDA) for identification. The young hyphae had acute angular branching and few septa and mature hyphal branches showed about 90-degree angles and development of monilioid cells, which were morphologically identical to Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IB reported previously. DNA sequences of ribosomal RNA gene (internal transcribed spacer) of the fungus were homologous with similarity of 99% to those of Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IB isolates in GenBank database, confirming the identity of the causal agent of the disease. Pathogenicity of the fungus was also confirmed on the creeping bentgrass and Kentucky bluegrass by Koch's postulates. This is the first report of brown patch on Kentucky bluegrass caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IB in Korea.
Yellow patch as leaf blight caused by binucleate Rhizoctonia occured in bentgrass (Agrostis Palustris Huds), zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) from several golf couses in Korea. Binucleate Rhizoctonia was isolated from the infected lesions and was identified Rhizoctonia cerealis. Rhizoctonia cerealis infected crown, stem and leaf tissue, and the symptom was light yellow circular patch upto 1 m in diameter on bentgrass golf green. Individual infected leaf near the margin of patch developed first red and finally turn brown. As zoysiagrass lawn, the symptom was 30~40cm circular patch that occured zoysiagrass shooting time as spring, and there could not sheeted in severe lesion. In case of sheeted, zoysiagrass was first irregular leaf sopt and finally dead. Hypha diameter of Rhizoctonia cerealis was $2.5~6.3\mu\textrm{m}$(average $3.8\mu\textrm{m}$) and colar was white to buff. Monilioid cell size was $5.8~12.5$\times$13.8~37.5\mu\textrm{m}$. Sclerotia size was 0.2~2.0mm and color was white to brown. Optium temperature for the hypha growth was $23^{\circ}C$. There was a little difference in pathogenicity among the isolates.
The effect of calcium cyanamide (China-made) soil fumigation on the growth of the ginseng pathogen Rhizoctonia, Pythium), soil microbes, and seed germination of lettuce and radish was investigated. At twice the recommended level (2S0-ppm $CaCN_2$), the growth of Rhizoctonia and Pythium, and the seed germination, were not inhibited. Rather, the effective level was 10,000 ppm. The powder form was more effective than the granular form in inhibiting pathogen growth and seed germination. The lettuce seed was also more sensitive than the radish seed. Calcium cyanamide appearedto decrease the fungi population and to increase Actinomycetes in the soil.

In August 2021, we surveyed diseases of wild vegetables grown in Taebaek, Gangwon Province, Korea. During the disease survey, we observed severe damping-off symptoms in young edible aster (Aster scaber) plants in a vinyl greenhouse investigated. The incidence of the disease in the plants ranged from 5% to 20%. Diseased plants of edible aster were collected from the vinyl greenhouse, and fungi were isolated from petiole lesions of the diseased plants. Rhizoctonia sp. was consistently isolated from the petiole lesions. We examined morphological characteristics and anastomosis groups of nine Rhizoctonia sp. isolates obtained from the petiole lesions. The examination results revealed that all the isolates corresponded to Rhizoctonia solani AG-4 based on the morphological characteristics and anastomosis test. Three isolates of R. solani AG-4 were tested for their pathogenicity on edible aster plants by artificial inoculation. Inoculation tests showed that the tested isolates caused damping-off symptoms on the inoculated plants. The induced symptoms were similar to those observed in the vinyl greenhouse investigated. Damping-off of edible aster caused by R. solani AG-4 is first reported in this study.
In May to July 2019, ovate-leaf atractylodes seedling and plant with Damping-off symptoms were observed in farmer field at Sangju and Mungyeong, Korea. Seven fungal isolates have been retrieved from diseased root tissue and identified as Rhizoctonia solani AG-5 based on morphological and molecular characteristics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on damping-off of ovate-leaf atractylodes caused by R. solani AG-5 in South Korea.
Incidence of stem rot on carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) ranged 11 to 29% in Namwon and Chongup area during the growing seasons from 1993 to 1994. Among 129 isolates from carnations in Namwon, 77 isolates were identified as Rhizoctonia solani, 38 isolates were Fusarium oxysporum and 14 isolates were not identified. Among 169 isolates in Chongup, 19 isolates were identified as R. solani, 106 isolates as F. oxysporum and 44 isolates were not identified. Among 77 isolates of R. solani isolated from the specimens of Namwon, 52 isolates were classified as anastomosis group AG 2-2 by anastomosis test, 14 isolates as AG 2-1 and 11 isolates as AG 4. Among 19 isolates from specimens of Chongup, 14 isolates were classified as anastomosis group AG 2-2 and 5 isolates as AG 4. Pathogenicity tests revealed that isolates of F. oxysporum and R.solani AG 2-2 were highly virulent and isolates of R.solani AG 2-1 and AG 4 were mildly virulent.

Damping-off symptoms were frequently observed on young plants of edible amaranth (Amaranthus mangostanus) grown in vinyl greenhouses by farmers located in Goyang and Yangpyeong in Korea during disease surveys carried out in 2019 and 2020. The incidence of the disease was 1-20%. A total of eight isolates of Rhizoctonia sp. were obtained from the stems of the diseased plants. All the isolates were identified as Rhizoctonia solani AG-4, based on the morphological characteristics and anastomosis test. Three isolates of R. solani AG-4 were tested for pathogenicity on edible amaranth by artificial inoculation. All the tested isolates of R. solani AG-4 induced damping-off symptoms on the inoculated plants; these symptoms were similar to those observed on the vinyl greenhouse plants surveyed. This is the first report of R. solani AG-4 causing damping-off in edible amaranth.
Various Trichoderma spp. were evaluated for the development of biofungicides to control soilborne pathogen, Rhiztonia solani, Various Trichoderma spp. were initially tested for their ability to inhibit growth of R. solani by inhibition zone test. Inhibition zones of 3∼5 mm toward R. solani were detected on PDA agar plates. The parasitic activity of strains, the activities of cell-wall-degrading enzymes such as glucanases and chitinases, were also evaluated. Highest activities of glucanase and chitinase were 3.5 U/ml and 0.9 U/ml, respectively, Isolated Trichoderma spp. also exhibited good growth with currently used agrochemicals, which represents that the isolated biofungicides can be mutually used with agrochemicals.
In July 2019, damping-off symptoms of young Fischer's ragwort (Ligularia fischeri) plants were observed in four vinyl greenhouses of a farmer located in Taebaek, Gangwon Province, Korea. This disease occurred in 20-30% of plants in the vinyl greenhouses investigated. Nine isolates of Rhizoctonia sp. were obtained from the diseased plants. All the isolates were identified as Rhizoctonia solani AG-2-2 (IIIB), based on morphological, cultural characteristics, and anastomosis test. Three isolates were used for artificial inoculation test on Fischer's ragwort. Pathogenicity of these isolates was confirmed on the plants with the inoculation tests. Damping-off symptoms observed on the inoculated plants were similar to those observed in the diseased plants in the vinyl greenhouses. This is the first report of R. solani AG-2-2 (IIIB) being the causative agent in damping-off in Fischer's ragwort.
Damping-off symptoms were frequently observed on young plants of Indian lettuce (Lactuca indica) grown in a farmer's vinyl greenhouse located in Goseong, Gangwon province of Korea during a disease survey in June 2019. The incidence of diseased plants in the vinyl greenhouse investigated was 30-50%. Four isolates of Rhizoctonia sp. were obtained from the diseased plants and identified as Rhizoctonia solani AG-4 based on the morphological characteristics and anastomosis test. Three isolates of R. solani AG-4 were tested for pathogenicity on Indian lettuce by artificial inoculation. All the tested isolates induced damping-off symptoms on the inoculated plants. The symptoms were similar to those observed in plants from the farmer's vinyl greenhouse investigated. This is the first report of R. solani AG-4 causing damping-off in Indian lettuce.
