Comparison of the Viscosity of Ceramic Slurries using a Rotational Rheometer and a Vibrational Viscometer (회전형 레오미터와 진동형 점도계를 이용한 세라믹 슬러리의 점도 비교)

  • The viscosity of a ceramic slurry depends on the slurry concentration, particle shape and size, hydrodynamic interactions, temperature, shear rate, pre-treatment condition and the method of measurement with the selected equipment. Representative ceramic slurries with low to high viscosity levels are selected from colloidal silica, barium titanate slurry and glass frit paste. Rotational rheometers and vibrational viscometers are used to compare the measured viscosity for various ceramic slurries. The rotational rheometer measured the viscosity according to the change of the shear rate or the rotational speed. On the other hand, the vibrational viscometer measured one point of the viscosity in a fixed vibrational mode. The rotational rheometer allows the measurement of the viscosity of a ceramic paste with a viscosity higher than 100,000 cP, while the vibrational viscometer provides an easy and quick method to measure the viscosity without deformation of the ceramic slurry due to the measurement method. It is necessary to select suitable equipment with which to measure the viscosity depending on the purpose of the measurement.

PvT measruement method of polymer using capillary rheometer (캐필러리 레오미터를 이용한 고분자의 PvT 측정 방법)

  • In injection molding processes, the property of molten resin should be characterized accurately. Among several properties, the PvT state is the most important one, since it affects the shrinkage, warpage, molded weight, and the part density. Thus, the PvT data is crucial to the simulation of the injection molding process. This work shows how such a measurement can be performed for a semi-crystalline and amorphous polymers. The PvT measurement has been conducted using a capillary rheometer using a suitable accessory that blocks the capillary. The results have shown that the PvT data can be obtained using such a rheometer and then the PvT coefficients of the Tait equation can be reached.

  • In this study, concrete pumpability was investigated using a sliding pipe rheometer when the slump was different, and the cause was analyzed by comparing the actual field pump pressure. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the concrete pumpability was greatly affected by the slump measurement value.

Effect of Surface Roughness of Rheometer on the Slip Phenomenon in the Viscosity Measurement of PIM Feedstock (분말사출재의 점도 측정 시 측정기 표면 조도가 미끄럼 현상에 미치는 영향)

  • In the viscosity measurement of PIM feedstock, slip correction methods require a number of experiments and produce a high level of error. In this study, a rotational rheometer with a parallel-discs configuration having different surface roughness was tried to minimize the effect of the slip phenomenon. Disc surface was prepared in 3 different roughness conditions - a smooth and 2 roughened surfaces. Results with the roughened surfaces were compared with the results obtained with a slip correction method. Relationship between powder characteristics such as size and shape and a surface roughness of the disc was examined for feedstock of 4 different powders with a same binder. As results, the effect of the slip phenomenon could be sufficiently minimized on the roughened surface in most cases. However, the effect of the slip phenomenon could not be sufficiently minimized for feedstock of a round-particular-shape powder and in the case of very narrow gap size.

Effects of Linear and Nonlinear Shear Deformation on Measurement for Stickiness of Cosmetics Using Rotational Rheometer

  • Cosmetics are representative complex fluids, and there have been many studies focusing on the correlation between the rheological properties and sensory attributes. Various instrumental measurements have been suggested to evaluate the sensory attributes, and one of the most common instruments is Texture Analyzer (TA). Although it is reported that the adhesiveness measured by TA is related to the stickiness of cosmetics, there exists reproducibility problem because measurements with TA are sensitive to application conditions. In this study, an instrumental protocol using rotational rheometer has been set up to measure the stickiness of cosmetics. This protocol consists of two steps. The first step is a preconditioning step, and various types of shear deformations are applied to the samples. The next step is the extensional flow and the axial force is measured. When the amplitude of the shear flow corresponded to the linear viscoelastic region, the axial force is the same as those without preconditioning. On the other hand, an axial force decreases as variation nonlinearity increases. It is because the effects of microstructure changes caused by nonlinear deformation affects the extensional flow. It is worth noting that a new protocol facilitates to evaluate the stickiness of cosmetics in a more systematic way.

Complex Modulus of Alumina Green Tapes Measured by Micro Fourier Rheometer (Micro Fourier Rheometer에 의한 알루미나 그린 테이프의 Complex Modulus 측정)

  • Alumina tapes, having various weight ratios of alumina powder/(alumina+binder+plasticizer), X, and binder / (binder+plsticizer), Y, were prepared and their complex modulus was measured using Micro Fourier Rheometer. As the X and Y ratios increased, Transfer function(TF) magnitude and Transfer function (TF) phase increased and decreased, respectively, indicating that the elastic modulus of the tapes depends on the weight ratios. The temperature dependence of the viscosity of the tapes was visualized by the decreased TF magnitude and the increased TF phase. The Y ratio dependence of the complex modulus related to the glass transition temperature of the tapes and the moduls change by the Y ratio was higher than that by the X ratio within the comperature of the tapes and the modulus changes by the Y ratio was higher than that by the X ratio within the composition range, investigated in the present study. The measurement of the complex modulus of the alumina tapes suggested that the TF phase should be higher that 17$^{\circ}$for the tapes to be utilized for 3-dimensional shaping.

Relationship between Apparent Viscosity and Line-Spread Test Measurement of Thickened Fruit Juices Prepared with a Xanthan Gum-based Thickener

  • The flow behaviors of three thickened fruit juices (orange, apple, and grape juice) prepared with a commercial instant xanthan gum (XG)-based thickener that is marketed in Korea were investigated at different thickener concentrations (1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0%, and 3.5%) and setting times (5 and 30 min) using a rheometer and a line-spread measurement method. The flow distance values measured by the line-spread test (LST) were compared with the apparent viscosity (${\eta}_{a,50}$) values measured with a sophisticated computer-controlled rheometer. The ${\eta}_{a,50}$ values of the juices increased as thickener concentration increased, whereas their flow distances decreased. The ${\eta}_{a,50}$ values at the 30-min setting time were much higher than those at the 5-min setting time, indicating that the setting time before serving or consuming thickened juices can affect viscosity values. Plots comparing ${\eta}_{a,50}$ values to LST flow distances revealed strong exponential relationships between the two measures ($R^2$=0.989 and $R^2$=0.987 for the 5- and 30-min setting times, respectively). These results indicate that the LST can be a suitable instrument for evaluating the viscosity of thickened fruit juices prepared with different XG-based thickener concentrations and setting times for the dysphagia diet.

Effects of Adding Silkworm Powder on the Quality of Seolgiddeok (누에분말을 첨가한 누에설기의 일반성분 및 품질 특성)

  • Seolgiddeok a representative rice cake was prepared by the addition of silkworm powder(SP) at various concentrations, and their physical characteristics were monitored by sensory evaluation, chromaticity, and rheometric measurement. In the proximate composition of SP cake, the contents of crude protein and ash were increased as the ratio of SP increased, but the moisture content was decreased. In the sensory evaluation, 3%-SP cake showed the highest preference, old showed the highest values in color, flavor, taste. texture, and overall duality. Lightness(L) value of SP cake was decreased as the ratio of SP increased. In the rheometer test, 15%-SP cake showed the highest value in the hardness, but 3%-SP cake showed the highest value in cohesiveness, gumminess and brittleness.

Measurement of red cell deformability and whole blood viscosity using laser-diffraction slit rheometer

  • The present study investigated the deformability of red blood cells (RBC) and its effect on whole blood viscosity using a laser-diffraction slit-rheometer (LDSR). The LDSR has been recently developed with significant advances in laser-diffractometry design, operation and data analysis. While shear stress levels in a slit flow are continuously decreasing, both the deformation of red blood cells and the shear stress were simultaneously measured. Additionally, the viscosity of whole blood was measured using the LDSR. The present study found that the whole blood viscosity is strongly dependent on the RBC deformability. The less deformable the RBCs are, the higher the blood viscosity is.
