  • In this paper, we proposed a content-based image retrieval system using the multi-Index key. The multi-index ky combines the color distribution considering the spatial characteristic and the shape features of an image using the edge detection. Consequently, the evaluation shows that the performance of the proposed technique is better than other techniques.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the user's online searching behavior in IR interfaces of e-journal database systems. The study is purely based on survey methods and tries to analyse the online searching behavior of respondents of social science disciplines who were doing research in three target central universities of Delhi (i.e. DU, JMI, and JNU). For measuring the responses of the respondents in IR interfaces of e-journal database systems, a total of 396 questionnaires were distributed among the students and out of all, 305 responses were used for the study. The findings of the study reveal that most of the students were not using all the facilities offered in IR interfaces of e-journal database systems for their retrieval process and also encourages menu based searches rather than command based searching.

  • In the video retrieval system, visual clues of still images and motion information of video are employed as feature vectors. We generate the temporal textures to express the motion information whose properties are simple expression, easy to compute. We make those temporal textures of wavelet coefficients to express motion information, M components. Then, temporal texture feature vectors are extracted using spatial texture feature vectors, i.e. spatial gray-level dependence. Also, motion amount and motion centroid are computed from temporal textures. Motion trajectories provide the most important information for expressing the motion property. In our modeling system, we can extract the main motion trajectory from the temporal textures.

  • Three dimensional (3-D) object detection and pose estimation from a single view query image has been an important issue in various fields such as medical applications, robot vision, and manufacturing automation. However, most of the existing methods are not appropriate in a real time environment since object detection and pose estimation requires extensive information and computation. In this paper, we present a fast 3-D object detection and pose estimation scheme based on surrounding camera view-changed images of objects. Our scheme has two parts. First, we detect images similar to the query image from the database based on the shape feature, and calculate candidate poses. Second, we perform accurate pose estimation for the candidate poses using the scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) method. We earned out extensive experiments on our prototype system and achieved excellent performance, and we report some of the results.

  • Because protein is a primary element responsible for biological or biochemical roles in living bodies, protein function is the core and basis information for biomedical studies. However, recent advances in bio technologies have created an explosive increase in the amount of published literature; therefore, biomedical researchers have a hard time finding needed protein function information. In this paper, a classification system for biomedical literature providing protein function evidence is proposed. Note that, despite our best efforts, we have been unable to find previous studies on the proposed issue. To classify papers based on protein function evidence, we should consider whether the main claim of a paper is to assert a protein function. We, therefore, propose two novel features - protein and assertion. Our experimental results show a classification performance with 71.89% precision, 90.0% recall, and a 79.94% F-measure. In addition, to verify the usefulness of the proposed classification system, two case study applications are investigated - information retrieval for protein function and automatic summarization for protein function text. It is shown that the proposed classification system can be successfully applied to these applications.

  • In this paper, we present a content-based image retrieval method that is less sensitive to some rotations and translations of an image by using the fuzzy region segmentation. The algorithm retrieves similar images from a database using the two features of color and color spatial information. To index images, we use the average coordinates of color distribution to obtain the spatial information of each segmented region. Furthermore, we also propose the alternative to the ripple phenomenon, which is occurred in the conventional fuzzy region segmentation algorithm.

  • This paper introduced Internet totally, which is continuously changing, for the aspect of service-improvement to users. Particulary, the concepts, the features and methods of Gopher, Veronica, Archie, WAIS and WWW which are used broadly in the aspect of information retrieval, have been introduced with command-language in Internet. Among them, this paper intends not only to describe in detail the use of Web-browser's method but also to explain about the search engine which is provided in the large online service on the base of actual experience.

  • Retrieval of ocean color information from Multispectral Camera (MSC) on KOMPSAT-2 was investigated to study and characterize small-scale biophysical features in the coastal oceans. Prior to the derivation of such information from space-acquired ocean color imageries, the atmospheric effects largely from path and the air-sea interface should be removed from the total signal recorded at the top of the atmosphere (T$_{TOA}$). In this study, the 'path-extraction' is introduced and demonstrated on the TM and SeaWiFS imageries of highly turbid coastal waters of Korea. The algorithms for retrieval of ocean color information were explored from the remote reflectance (R$_{rs}$) in the visible wavebands of MSC. The determination of coefficient (R$^{2}$) for log-transformed data [ N = 500] was 0.90. Similarly, the R$^{2}$ value for log-transformed data [ N = 500] was found to be 0.93.

  • This paper proposed the content-based retrieval system as a method for performing image retrieval through the effective feature extraction of the object of significant meaning based on the characteristics of man's visual system. To allow the object region of interest to be primarily detected, the region, being comparatively large size, greatly different from the background color and located in the middle of the image, was judged as the major object with a meaning. To get the original features of the image, the cumulative sum of tile declination difference vector the segment of the object contour had and the signature of the bipartite object were extracted and used in the form of being applied to the rotation of the object and the change of the size after partition of the total length of the object contour of the image into the normalized segment. Starting with this form feature, it was possible to make a retrieval robust to any change in translation, rotation and scaling by combining information on the texture sample, color and eccentricity and measuring the degree of similarity. It responded less sensitively to the phenomenon of distortion of the object feature due to the partial change or damage of the region. Also, the method of imposing a different weight of similarity on the image feature based on the relationship of complexity between measured objects using the fractal dimension by the Boxing-Counting Dimension minimized the wrong retrieval and showed more efficient retrieval rate.

  • In this paper, an automatic construction method of theme melody index for large music database and an associative content-based music retrieval mechanism in which the constructed theme melody index is mainly used to improve the users' response time are proposed. First, the system automatically extracted the theme melody from a music file by the graphical clustering algorithm based on the similarities between motifs of the music. To place an extracted theme melody into the metric space of M-tree, we chose the average length variation and the average pitch variation of the theme melody as the major features. Moreover, we added the pitch signature and length signature which summarize the pitch variation pattern and the length variation pattern of a theme melody, respectively, to increase the precision of retrieval results. We also proposed the associative content-based music retrieval mechanism in which the k-nearest neighborhood searching and the range searching algorithms of M-tree are used to select the similar melodies to user's query melody from the theme melody index. To improve the users' satisfaction, the proposed retrieval mechanism includes ranking and user's relevance feedback functions. Also, we implemented the proposed mechanisms as the essential components of content-based music retrieval systems to verify the usefulness.
