The land surface temperature (LST) can be defined as a weighted average temperature of components which constitute a pixel. The coefficients of split-window algorithm for MTSAT-1R were obtained by means of a statistical regression analysis from radiative transfer simulations using MODTRAN 4.0 for a wide range of atmospheric, satellite viewing angle (SVA) and lapse rate conditions. 6 types of atmospheric profile data imbedded in the MODTRAN 4 are used for the radiative transfer simulations. The RMSE is clearly larger on warm and humid profiles than cold and dry profiles, especially when the satellite viewing angle and lapse rate are large. The derivation of LST equations according to the atmospheric profiles clearly decreased the RMSE without regard to the SVA and lapse rate. The bias and RMSE are decreased as the more controls factors included. This preliminary result indicates that the characteristics of atmosphere, SVA and lapse rate should be included in the LST equation.
Fog can cause large-scale human and economic damages, including traffic systems and agriculture. So, Korea Meteorological Administration is operating about 290 visibility meters to improve the observation level of fog. However, it is still insufficient to detect very localized fog. In this study, high-resolution grid-type visibility data were retrieved from irregularly distributed visibility data across the country. To this end, three objective analysis techniques (Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW), Ordinary Kriging (OK) and Universal Kriging (UK)) were used. To find the best method and parameters, sensitivity test was performed for the effective radius, power parameter and variogram model that affect the level of objective analysis. Also, the effect of data distribution characteristics (level of normality) on the performance level of objective analysis was evaluated. IDW showed a relatively high level of objective analysis in terms of bias, RMSE and correlation, and the performance is inversely proportional to the effective radius and power parameter. However, the two Krigings showed relatively low level of objective analysis, in particular, greatly weakened the variability of the variables, although the level of output was different depending on the variogram model used. As the level of objective analysis is greatly influenced by the distribution characteristics of data, power, and models used, care should be taken when selecting objective analysis techniques and parameters.
Background/Aims: Cold snare polypectomy (CSP) is commonly used for the resection of colorectal polyps ≤10 mm. Data regarding the influence of snare type on CSP effectiveness are conflicting. Hence, this meta-analysis aimed to compare the outcomes and safety of thin- and thick-wire snares for CSP. Methods: A comprehensive search of the literature published between 2000 and 2021 was performed of various databases for comparative studies evaluating the outcomes of thin- versus thick-wire snares for CSP. Results: Five studies with data on 1,425 polyps were included in the analysis. The thick-wire snare was comparable to the thin-wire snare with respect to complete histological resection (risk ratio [RR], 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.97-1.09), overall bleeding (RR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.40-2.40), polyp retrieval (RR, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.97-1.04), and involvement of submucosa in the resection specimen (RR, 1.28; 95% CI, 0.72-2.28). There was no publication bias and a small study effect, and the relative effects remained the same in the sensitivity analysis. Conclusions: CSP using a thin-wire snare has no additional benefit over thick-wire snares in small colorectal polyps. Factors other than snare design may play a role in improving CSP outcomes.

Objectives : This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of manual and electroacupuncture on glaucoma. Method : We searched 11 electronic databases using index words to identify randomized clinical trials. Meta-analysis of weighted mean difference (WMD) or standardized mean difference (SMD) were used to evaluate the outcomes. Cochrane bias risk assessment tool was used to assess the risk of bias in each clinical study. The collected data was analyzed using RevMan software (ver. 5.3). Results : At the initial stage of data retrieval, 549 papers were searched. After reviewing 37 full texts, a total of 10 RCT studies (426patients, 715 eyes) were selected and 8 RCT studies (357 people, 617 eyes) were involved in meta-analysis. Meta-analysis of 8 RCTs showed that acupuncture alone was more effective in reducing intraocular pressure(IOP) than conventional treatment (WMD = -5.73, 95% CI: [-12.30, 0.83], P = 0.09, I2 = 97%) The combination of acupuncture or electroacupuncture with conventional treatment was also effective in lowering IOP (WMD = -1.84, 95% CI: [-2.31, -1.37], P <0.00001, I2 = 45%). It was estimated that the combination of acupuncture with conventional treatment was also effective for improving visual field (VF) (WMD = -2.17, 95% CI: [-4.32, -0.02], P = 0.05, I2 = 89%) but improvement in visual acuity (VA) was not significant (MD = 0.06, 95% CI: [-0.03, 0.15], P = 0.23, I2 = 0%). Subgroup analyzes were performed only for the studies that used open glaucoma as the study's disease and combination of acupuncture or electroacupuncture with conventional therapy would have an effect on lowering intraocular pressure (WMD = -1.68)., 95% CI: [-2.46, -0.90], P <0.0001, I2 = 29%). Conclusion : This study suggests that acupuncture treatment for glaucoma may be effective in reducing intraocular pressure and helpful in improving visual field defects. However, due to the small sample size, high risk of bias and high heterogeneity in the methodology, it is expected that further studies will be needed to verify the results. Further studies in large-scale samples based on a minimized biased methodology would be necessary.
For the application to the numerical weather prediction (NWP) in active service, it is necessary to ensure that the GPS precipitable water vapor (PWV) data has less than one hour latency and three millimeter accuracy. The comparison and the verification between the daily products from GPS measurement by using the IGS final ephemeris and the conventional meteorological observation has been done in domestic researches. In case of using IGS final ephemeris, GPS measurements can be only post processed in daily basis in three weeks after the observation. Thus this method cannot be applied to any near real-time data processing. In this paper, a GPS data processing method to produce the PWV output with three mm accuracy and one hour latency for the data assimilation in NWP has been planned. For our new data processing strategy, IGS ultra-rapid ephemeris and the sliding window technique are applied. And the results from the new strategy has been verified. The GPS measurements during the first 10 days of January, April, July and October were processed. The results from the observations at Sokcho, where the GPS and radiosonde were collocated, were compared. As the results, a data processing strategy with 0.8 mm of mean bias and 1.7 mm of standard deviation in three minutes forty-three seconds has been established.
Recently measurements of atmospheric trace gases from satellite are vigorous. So the development of its data processing algorithm is important. In this study, retrievalof vertical ozone profile from the atmospheric transmittance measured by satellite solar occultation method and its sensitivity to temperature and pressure are investigated. The measured transmittance from satellite is assumed to be given by the limb path transmittance simulated using annual averaged Umkehr data for Seoul. The limb path transmittance between wavelengths $9.89{\mu}m$ and $10.2{\mu}m$ is simulated with respect to tangent heights using the ozone data of HALOE SIDS(Hallogen Occultation Experiment Simulated Instrument Data Set) as an initial profile. Other input data such as pressure and temperature are also from HALOE SIDS. Vertical ozone profile is correctly retrieved from the measured transmittance by onion-peeling method from 50km to 11km tangent heights with the vertical resolution of 3km. The bias error of $\pm0.001$ in measured transmittance, the forced error of $\pm3K$ in each layer temperature, and the forced $\pm3%$ error in each layer pressure are assumed for sensitivity tests. These errors are based on the ADEOS/ILAS error limitation. The error in ozone amount ranges from -6.5% to +6.9% due to transmittance error, from -9.5% to +10.5% due to temperature error, and from -5.1% to +5.4% due to pressure error, respectively. The present study suggests that accurate vertical ozone profile can be retrieved from satellite solar occultation method. Accuracy of vertical temperature profile is especially important in the retrieval of vertical ozone profile.
Albedo is one of the climate variables that modulate absorption of solar energy, and its retrieval is important process for climate change study. High spatial resolution and long-term consistent periods are important considerations in order to efficiently use the retrieved albedo data. This study retrieved surface broadband albedo based on Landsat 8 as high resolution which is consistent with Landsat 7. First of all, we analyzed consistency of Landsat 7 channel and Landsat 8 channel. As a result, correlation coefficient(R) on all channels is average 0.96. Based on this analysis, we used multiple linear regression model using Landsat 7 albedo, which is being used in many studies, and Landsat 8 reflectance channel data. The regression coefficients of each channel calculated by regression analysis were used to derive a formula for converting the Landsat 8 reflectance channel data to broadband albedo. After Landsat 8 albedo calculated using the derived formula is compared with Landsat 7 albedo data, we confirmed consistency of two satellite using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), R-square ($R^2$) and bias. As a result, $R^2$ is 0.89 and RMSE is 0.003 between Landsat 7 albedo and Landsat 8 albedo.

ZHD (Zenith Hydrostatic Delay) model is important parameter in estimating of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) PWV (Precipitable Water Vapor) along with weighted mean temperature. The ZWD (Zenith Wet Delay) is tend to accumulate the ZHD error, so that biases from ZHD will be affected on the precision of GNSS PWV. In this paper, we compared the accuracy of GNSS PWV with radiosonde PWV using three ZHD models, such as Saastamoinen, Hopfield, and Black. Also, we adopted the KWMT (Korean Weighted Mean Temperature) model and the mean temperature which was observed by radiosonde on the retrieval processing of GNSS PWV. To this end, GNSS observation data during one year were processed to produce PWVs from a total of 5 GNSS permanent stations in Korea, and the GNSS PWVs were compared with radiosonde PWVs for the evaluating of biases. The PWV biases using mean temperature estimated by the KWMT model are smaller than radiosonde mean temperature. Also, we could confirm the result that the Saastamoinen ZHD which is most used in the GNSS meteorology is not valid in South Korea, because it cannot be exclude the possibility of biases by latitude or height of GNSS station.
KOMPSAT-5 is the first satellite in Korea equipped with X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) instrument and has been operated since August 2013. KOMPSAT-5 is used to monitor the global environment according to its observation purpose and the availability of KOMPSAT-5 is also highlighted as the need of high resolution wind data for investigating the coastal region. However, the previous study for the validation of wind derived from KOMPSAT-5 showed that the accuracy is lower than that of other SAR satellites. Therefore, in this study, we developed the correction equation of normalized radar cross section (NRCS or backscattering coefficient) for improvement of wind from the KOMPSAT-5 and validated the effect of the equation using the in-situ measurement of ocean buoys. Theoretical estimated NRCS and observed NRCS from KOMPSAT-5 showed linear relationship with incidence angle. Before applying the correction equation, the accuracy of the estimated wind speed showed the relatively high root-mean-square errors (RMSE) of 2.89 m s-1 and bias of -0.55 m s-1. Such high errors were significantly reduced to the RMSE of 1.60 m s-1 and bias of -0.38 m s-1 after applying the correction equation. The improvement effect of the correction equation showed dependency relying on the range of incidence angle.
Aerosol optical depth (AOD) data retrieved by the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) during 2011-2014 were compared with AOD measurements from 134 Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sites over the East Asia. Overall, COMS and AERONET AODs were weakly correlated (R = 0.297). The agreement between COMS and AERONET AODs was improved when data from near Korean peninsula sites were selected (R = 0.475). Regression analysis results for each AERONET site are vary from R=0.026 at AOE_Baotou to 0.905 at DRAGON_Anmyeon. It was also shown that the bias in COMS AOD was not systematic with respect to effective radius, precipitable water, surface reflectance, and sun zenith angle. Together, these results suggest that COMS AOD measurements may be suitable for near Korea. Finally, the current results will help to improve the retrieval algorithm and vary when using alternative COMS AOD version in the future.
