  • Papermaking has changed remarkably during the past 20 years, creating huge pressures on retention and drainage programs. During this time, technology has advanced from single PAM flocculants to inorganic microparticle-based programs and then to micropolymer-based programs. In today's evolving fine paper market, retention and drainage programs have to meet increased demands in many areas, such as increased speed, GAP formers, dilution headboxes, higher ash levels, reduced furnish quality, lower cost, and increased machine efficiency. Hercules recently introduced a new technology that offers performance and stability improvements and operational cost savings as compared to existing advanced technologies. $PerForm(R)$ SP Advanced Retention and Drainage Technology consists of a family of products based on a structured organic particulate that offers papermakers the ultimate flexibility for management of wet end chemistry. This paper compares $PerForm(R)$ SP Advanced Retention and Drainage Technology to inorganic microparticle and micropolymer technologies and provides multiple case histories on machines that demonstrate the benefits of the technology. In these case histories, the PerForm SP is shown to provide improved retention and drainage that results in improved performance and operational cost savings to the mill.

  • KOptimization and control of wet-end process provide a key solution to improve paper quality and production efficiency at the same time. Wet-end of paper machine is to determine three important influencing factors of papermaking i.e., retention, drainage and formation. Good formation of paper could be made at the cost of deteriorated retention or drainage. In the same manner increase of retention aid could cause the bad formation of paper. It is very important to find a proper retention chemical which may satisfy one of three factors without the sacrifice of other two. Laboratory scale analyzing or screening chemical additives of wet-end was reported in this study based on RDA sheet molding. Different from the conventional test method, simultaneous consideration of three important wet-end properties could be made by RDA and consequently more reliable prediction of actual paper machine wet-end could be expected.

  • The interrelation between retention factors of several L-amino acids and their physico-chemical and structural properties can be determined in chromatographic research. In this paper we describe a predictor for retention factors with various properties of the L-amino acids. Eighteen L-amino acids are included in this study, and retention factors are measured experimentally by RP-HPLC. Binding energy ($E_b$), hydrophobicity (log P), molecular refractivity (MR), polarizability (${\alpha}$), total energy ($E_t$), water solubility (log S), connectivity index (${\chi}$) of different orders and Wiener index (w) are theoretically calculated. Relationships between these properties and retention factors are established, and their predictive and interpretive ability are evaluated. The equation of the relationship between retention factors and various descriptors of L-amino acids is suggested as linear and multiple linear form, and the correlation coefficients estimated are relatively higher than 0.90.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm multiple retention system of C-PAM, A-PAM and Inorganic micro particles vs. traditional micro particle system and dual polymer system by measuring retention, drainage and formation using RDA HSF and Techpap 2D -F Sensor The benefits of dual polymer system were easy to use, low chemical consumption and good retention property but defect was worse drainage property than inorganic microparticle systems. On the other hand, Inorganic microparticle system had benefit of good drainage effect but defects were difficult to use, high chemical consumption. Therefore, we tried to find optimal morphology of polyacrylamide and applied to multiple retention system of C-PAM, A-PAM and inorganic microparticles to compensate defects of both of retention systems. As a result, we found the performance of branched C-PAM, branched A-PAM and inorganic micro particle triple system was more appropriate than traditional inorganic mircoparticle systems or dual polymer systems by comparing retention, drainage and formation.

  • In this study, 8 solutes (aniline, caffeine, p-cresol, ethyl benzene, methylparaben, phenol, pyridine, and toluene) have been tested in terms of linear solvation energy relationships (LSER). Several micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) systems using cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and a mixture of water with (methanol, n-propanol, and n-butanol) modifiers were characterized using the LSER solvation parameter model. The effects of the surfactant and modifier concentration on the retention in MLC were discussed. LSER model had demonstrated high potential to predict retention factors with high squared correlation coefficients ($r^2$ > 0.99). A comparison of predicted and experimental retention factors suggests that LSER formalism is able to reproduce adequately the experimental retention factors of the solutes studied in the different experimental conditions investigated. This model is a helpful tool to understand the solute-surfactant interactions and evaluate the retention characteristic of micellar liquid chromatography.

  • This study was performed to find effective measuring methods of retention and drainage by comparing traditional measuring methods of Britt jar, Canadian standard freeness tester methods and recently developed RDA-HSF with multi-channel turbidimeter method. At the result, Multi-channel turbidimeter method was useful to measure retention and efficiency of multiple chemical dosing system. A system CSF equipped with the balance recorder was also useful to obtain dynamic drainage information including initial drainage rate and final drainage amount. Therefore, we consider these new measuring systems would be helpful to advance retention and drainage technology.

  • This study was performed to characterize inverse emulsion type cationic polyacrylamide (PAM) and to compare with powder and salt dispersion type PAMs as a retention and drainage aid. Salt dispersion type PAM has defects of high amount of salt which increases conductivity of white water, low active polymer contents and relatively worse retention and drainage properties than others because of its low molecular weight. Powder type PAM has benefit of high active polymer contents and good retention and drainage properties, but defects of low dissolution speed and insoluble particle generation were observed. However, inverse emulsion type showed the best retention and drainage aids among them by controlling molecular weight and morphology easily and it had relatively higher active polymer contents and better solubility.

  • This research investigates the effect of copper retention on copper leaching in wood treated with copper-based preservatives. Radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) sapwood samples were ground in a Wiley mill equipped with a 20-mesh screen. The ground wood was vacuum-treated with various concentrations of alkaline copper quat (ACQ), bis-(N-cyclohexyl-diazeniumdioxy)-copper (CB-HDO), and copper azole (CUAZ). The treated samples were conditioned at $70^{\circ}C$ and 100% RH for 72 hours. The samples were leached by using the distilled water for four weeks, and the copper contents in each sample were measured by X-ray spectroscopy. As expected, the copper leaching was increased with increasing of copper retention. The copper leaching from the ACQ and CB-HDO treated samples were gradually decreased with increasing copper retention: however, the copper losses from the CUAZ treated samples appeared to be proportionally increased with the increase in copper retention in all retention levels tested. The results indicate that at the conditions of the same copper retention ACQ and CB-HDO treated wood have a better leaching resistance compared to CUAZ treated wood.
