In this study, we investigated retention characteristics of nanocoated GCC that was positively modified by Layer-by-Layer (LbL) multilayering process. Three layers were formed onto GCC particles with poly-DADMAC/PSS/poly-DADMAC (PD3) and C-starch/A-PAM/C-starch (CS3) systems, respectively. Untreated GCC, PD3 GCC (strongly positive charge) and CS3 GCC (weekly positive charge) were retained on pulp fibers under single retention system or microparticle retention system conditions. In single retention system, PD3 particles were not affected by cationic retention aid due to their strong positive charge, whereas CS3 particles reacted with cationic retention aid due to anionic sites on the surface of the weekly positive particles. In a microparticle retention system, positively modified GCC (PD3 and CS3) showed higher retention level than untreated GCC at the same dosage of retention aid. The cationic surface of GCC particles were more reacted with bentonite so the deposition onto pulp fibers was improved. In addition, the retention level of nanocoated GCC was increased with maintaining good formation.

Multivariate data analysis tools were used to improve the understanding of the wet end chemistry and white water system of the Papermill at NorskeCanada Crofton Division. Specifically, the analysis was aimed at identifying what variables were contributing to increased retention aid use and wet end instability. Several models were developed using data sets with up to 88 process variables and over 3000 observations. It was found that increased retention aid use was driven primarily by PCC and TMP usage as well as the addition of Alaskan White Spruce to the TMP furnish.

This study was performed to introduce recently developed polyvinylamine as a wet-end process and paper strength improving aids. As a retention and drainage aids, high cationic charged polyvinylamine was more effective at the BCTMP and ONP stock condition than LBKP stock condition. As a dry tensile strength aid, dual system of polyvinylamine with anionic polyacrylamide was the best at the LBKP or ONP stock conditions. On the other hand, polyvinyl amine alone was better than dual system of polyvinylamine with anionic polyacrylamide at the BCTMP condition. As a wet tensile strength aid, polyvinylamine single system and dual system of polyvinylamine with anionic polyacrylamide were good at LBKP, BCTMP and ONP stock conditions. However, poly(aminoamide)-epichlorohydrin resin was good at LBKP and ONP stock conditions but efficiency of poly(aminoamide)-epichlorohydrin resin was remarkably decreased at BCTMP stock condition.
In this paper, we investigated the retention amounts(ash contents) according to the addition amounts of retention aid and calcium carbonate and compared the mechanical and optical properties of sheets under the same ash content. As the addition amounts of retention aid increase, the retention of calcium carbonate, that is, ash contents of sheets increase in all retention system. In this case, the sheets included ash content as already expected is produced by adjusting the addition amounts of retention aid and calcium carbonate. Tensile index, burst index, tear index, internal bonding strength of sheets straightly decrease as the ash content of sheets increases. Especially, in the same ash content, all sorts of strength are high in compozil system, low in dual polymer system. Opacity increases along with according to the increase of ash content, and is high in hydrocol system, the worst in dual polymer system. In equal opacity, the strength of paper decreases compozil, hydrocol, and dual polymer system in order. But to judge she superiority or inferiority of retention aids, it should consider the various factors such as the optimum production and process conditions besides the retention amounts of filler and the sheet strength.

This study was performed to characterize inverse emulsion type cationic polyacrylamide (PAM) and to compare with powder and salt dispersion type PAMs as a retention and drainage aid. Salt dispersion type PAM has defects of high amount of salt which increases conductivity of white water, low active polymer contents and relatively worse retention and drainage properties than others because of its low molecular weight. Powder type PAM has benefit of high active polymer contents and good retention and drainage properties, but defects of low dissolution speed and insoluble particle generation were observed. However, inverse emulsion type showed the best retention and drainage aids among them by controlling molecular weight and morphology easily and it had relatively higher active polymer contents and better solubility.

Microparticle and micropolymer retention and drainage aid systems are powerful tools for paper and board making on a variety of machines. Drawbacks attributed to the current systems sometimes include; apparent high cost, production and quality problems and in some cases a negative effect on formation. The next generation multi-component organic/inorganic systems have demonstrated their ability to decouple the effects of retention and drainage and to improve the formation and print quality for the same retention and in some cases higher retention levels. It is now possible to optimize independently retention, drainage and formation effects with the same high return on investment of current microparticle systems.

KOptimization and control of wet-end process provide a key solution to improve paper quality and production efficiency at the same time. Wet-end of paper machine is to determine three important influencing factors of papermaking i.e., retention, drainage and formation. Good formation of paper could be made at the cost of deteriorated retention or drainage. In the same manner increase of retention aid could cause the bad formation of paper. It is very important to find a proper retention chemical which may satisfy one of three factors without the sacrifice of other two. Laboratory scale analyzing or screening chemical additives of wet-end was reported in this study based on RDA sheet molding. Different from the conventional test method, simultaneous consideration of three important wet-end properties could be made by RDA and consequently more reliable prediction of actual paper machine wet-end could be expected.
The purpose of this study is to solve the problem of nutrient removal due to rapid hydraulic retention time (HRT) variation in small size private sewage treatment facility and to have better effluent quality by using natural zeolite as a coagulant aid. The experiments were conducted by applying different conditions of HRT, coagulant, and zeolite dosages. As an experimental result, $TBOD_{5}$, TSS, and TP removal efficiencies were 64.9%, 94.5%, and 98.8% at co-injection with zeolite. Overall removal efficiencies of $TBOD_{5}$, TSS, and TP have improved 15.7, 28.7, 6.1%, respectively. This result shows that zeolite addition could improve flocculation, increase setting velocity, and thus have better treatment. Therefore the use of zeolite as a coagulant aid can be useful in small size private sewage treatment facility, where especially extra nutrient removal is required to meet the legal standard for discharge.

The floc characteristics of base paper stock for coating by the retention aid system consisting of polyacrylamide (high molecular weight low charge density, HMLC) and PEI without and with anionic inorganic oxide (IO) were investigated under various shear conditions of MDDA (modified dynamic drainage analyzer). The floc size was increased with cationic electrolytes dosage whatever inorganic oxide is applied or not. The effect of inorganic oxide on the floc size showed the different result between PAM and PEI. The smaller floc was obtained by PAM without inorganic oxide, but larger floc was obtained by PAM with inorganic oxide. However, the effect of shear force was not observed. Floc formation index was decreased by the addition of cationic electrolytes with or without inorganic oxide. Floc formation index had better correlation format formation index than floc size. The relationships between wet web permeability and mat air permeability showed the significant linear correlation ($R^2$=0.97~0.98) for HML PAM and PEI. Floc formation index gave more useful information than the retention measurement when the performance of retention aids is evaluated at the laboratory before applying at the paper mill.
Two types of polyurethane-acrylate polymer were synthesized by reaction of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA), acrylamide(AA), and polyurethane prepolymer. Water-soluble cationic polyurethane/acrylate retention aids were prepared by using polyurethane-acrylate, benzyl chloride and distilled water. The retention, drainage and strength properties of the retention aids were investigated. The retention of cationic polyurethane/acrylate type retention aids maintained around 70 % regardless of nm. COD value of white water was much reduced by adding the retention aids to it. Drainage property was also improved by addition of the retention aids. In addition, specific compression strength of the paper was improved a little by addition of the retention aids. PU-HEMA type showed better performance than PU-AA in terms of compression strength of the paper.
