  • Transposition has been described as an interchange of position of permanent tooth and is a relatively rare dental anomaly. Transposition of teeth may occur both in the maxillary and mandibular arches. but it appears more often in the maxilla of individual teeth, the maxillary canine is the most often involved. A canine transposes most often with a first premolar and less frequently transposes with a lateral incisor. Incomplete transposition is a condition describing an interchange in the position of the crowns of two permanent teeth, while the root apices remain in their relative position. Complete transposition is a situation in which both the crowns and entire root structure are transposed. The etiologic factors of transposition are tooth buds interchange, retained deciduous canines, migration of the erupting canine, trauma to deciduous teeth etc. This report describes a case of a transposition between a maxillary left canine and a lateral incisor and impaction of a maxillary left central incisor due to trauma to deciduous dentition.

Preparation and Storage Conditions of Oleoresin from Root Portion of Peeled Garlic (박피마늘 뿌리부분을 이용한 Oleoresin의 제조 및 저장조건)

  • Extraction and storage conditions of oleoresin were studied from root portion of peeled garlic, an waste of garlic industry. Extraction with ethanol and methanol showed an high solid yields of $27{\sim}37%$ at the temperature range of $30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$. Two hours of extraction were found to be economic because of no significant increase in furthur extraction. Storage of the oleoresin under anaerobic condition such as vaccum or nitrogen resulted in a less changes in pH, total acidity, color and thiosulfinate content, than those changes under aerobic condition. Most of the thiosulfinate was decreased for all conditions after 14 days of storage at $25^{\circ}C$. Glucose and sucrose were increased and most of organic acids were decreased during storage under nitrogen condition. Addition of ascorbic acid and cysteine into oleoresin retained the garlic flavor, effectively.

Effects of platelet-rich plasma on tooth replantation in dogs: a histologic and histomorphometric analysis

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on periodontal healing of replanted root surfaces in dogs histologically and histomorphometrically. Methods: A total of 36 roots of mandibular incisors and premolars from 6 mongrel dogs were used. The roots were randomly divided into 3 groups: 1) a positive control group (n=12), in which the periodontal ligament (PDL) and cementum were retained and the roots were soaked in saline; 2) a negative control group (n=12), in which the PDL and cementum were removed and the roots were soaked in saline; and 3) an experimental group (n=12), in which the PDL and cementum were removed and the roots were soaked in PRP. After soaking the root surfaces, the extracted roots were replanted into the extraction sockets. The roots were covered using a coronally repositioned flap Results: Histologically, irregular-thickness PDL-like and cementum-like tissues were observed in the 4-week experimental group and the positive control group. PDL-like tissue and cementum-like tissue with a more uniform thickness were observed at 8 weeks. In the negative control group, PDL-like tissue and cementum-like tissue were rarely found, and root resorption and ankylosis were observed. In the cross-sectional histomorphometric analysis, the experimental group demonstrated a higher rate of formation of cementum-like tissue and a lower tooth ankylosis rate than the positive and negative control groups at 4 and 8 weeks. Although there was a significant difference in the tooth ankylosis rate and the formation of cementum-like tissue across the 3 groups (P<0.05), no statistical significance was observed between any pair of groups (P>0.017). Conclusions: Applying PRP to root surfaces during tooth replantation in dogs can reduce tooth ankylosis and increase PDL-like and cementum-like tissue formation.

The Evaluation on the exiting greens of Hwasan Country Club by undisturbed Soil Core Analysis (토양 코아 분석을 통한 화산 골프장의 조성된 그린에 대한 평가)

  • The subsurface environment of the root zone area can set the stae for "do or die" of the turfgrass plant. The good condition of the greens is verified by their physical properties. Therefore, this study was carried to evaluate on the existing green of Hwasan C.C. by undisturbed soil Core Anaysis. We completed the ISTRC SYSTEM BenchMarking of the undisturbed core samples taken from Green #1, Green #5, Green #9-"Best" area, and Green #9-"Stressed" area for the Hwasan C.C.. It was also our understanding that the greens were in "good" to "very good" conditioni. THe exception might be Green #9-"Stress" area, which was the stressed area. The stressed area was confined to a ridge across Green #9. The organic content test results comfirmed the development of organic layering in depth 0-2.5cm. For the amount of compaction in the upper root zones and te development of the green's respective organic layers, the infiltration rates were high in Green #1, Green #5, and Green #9 "Stressed" area. The depicted aerificaton hole might be the probable cause of the relatively high infiltraton rate. Green #9-"Best" area had a tested infiltration rate of 18.75cm/hr. Either this area had not been aerified, or the undisturbed sample did not contain a aerification cavity. The water retention capacity of the undisturbed samples was good. When the greens were first constructed, the original root zone mix had been relatively low water retention properties. And the bulk density and the porosity of the undisturbed samples were good. In the result, all the greens were similar except for the infiltration. Thus, we supposed that Green #9-"Stressed" area might be ainly influenced by the amount of irrigation water and the configuration of the green's surface. There had been a reduction in the amount of irrigation water as the water retention capacity in the greens was promoted. Especially, it had gradually become more of a problem as the green had matured in Green #9-"Stressed" area. Because Green #9-"Stressed" area was a ridge area. The reduction in the amount of irrigation water might be the probable cause of the stress in Green #9-"Stressed" area. Our final observation related to the soil texture and the particle size distribution of the sand. Though and sand contant of all the tested greens were good, the gravel content of them exceeded ISTRC Guidelines. In particle size distribution of the sand, the very coarse and the coarse content of all the tested greens exceeded, but the rest was insufficient. The stability is a function of the material retained on the 0.25mm mesh screen. But, the content of all the tested greens was very insufficient. Though all the greens was serviceable, the coarse root zone sands, such as the sand in the tested greens, tended to be "unstable". Thus, we recommend using a topdressing/aerification sand which should be more in line with ISTRC/USGA Guidelines.;unstable". Bacterial determinants involved in the induction of systemic resistance ana plant growth promotion in tobacco by Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6.

  • The ability of P. chlororaphis O6 to induce resistance to Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovara SCCI and to promote growth in tobacco was demonstrated in microtiter assays on plants pre-inoculated at the root level with the bacteria before challenge with the leaf pathogen. To identify th bacterial determinants involved in induced systemic resistance and plant growth promotion, cell culture of O6 grown in King's medium B was fractionated with organic solvents and purified using various columns. in vivo and in vitro assays with samples from successive fractionation steps of the O6 supernatant led to the conclusion that antibacterial compounds were observed in aqueous layer, and to the isolation of fractions containing metabolites that retained most of the resistance-inducing activity (70:30, methanol:water) and the plant growth promotion (80:20 and 90:10, methanol:water) after ODS column chromatography. Although these molecules remain to be purified further and structurally characterized, its isolation is an addition to the range of determinants from plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria known to stimulate plant defence.

The Effect of Restorative Method on Fracture Strength and Fracture Pattern in Endodontically Treated Teeth (근관 치료 후 수복 방법이 파절 강도와 파절 양상에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate interaction of restorative method according to amount of remaining clinical crown length. For the study, sixty healthy mandibular premolars with no dental caries were chosen. Specimens with clinical crown length of 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm above the cemento-enamel junction(CEJ) were prepared and root canal treatment was conducted using Ni-Ti rotaty files. Thirty specimens were restored with $LuxaCore^{(R)}$ and thirty were restored with casting posts. All specimens were restored with full coverage crowns and the fracture strength was teseted with the MTS universal testing marchine. The fracture pattern was observed by measuring the distance between CEJ and fracture line. From the results above, the fracture strength seems to be influenced more by amount of remaining clinical crown length than restorative method. Good prognosis could be expected, when more than 2mm of clinical crown length is retained. In the future, the further studies on restorative method, to increase fracture strength of teeth will be necessary.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of significant panoramic radiographic findings and eventual treatment requirements before conventional or implant supported prosthetic treatment in asymptomatic edentulous patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 743 asymptomatic edentulous patients were retrospectively evaluated using a digital panoramic system. We analyzed the radiographic findings, including impacted teeth, retained root fragments, foreign bodies, severe atrophy of the posterior maxillary alveolar bone, mucous retention cysts, soft tissue calcifications and radiopaque-radiolucent conditions. RESULTS. Four-hundred-eighty-seven (65.6%) patients had no radiographic finding. A total of 331 radiographic findings were detected in 256 (34%) patients. In 52.9% (n=175) of these conditions, surgical treatment was required before application of implant-supported fixed prosthesis. However, before application of conventional removable prosthesis surgical treatment was required for 6% (n=20) of these conditions. CONCLUSION. The edentulous patients who will have implant placement for implant-supported fixed prosthesis can frequently require additional surgical procedures to eliminate pathological conditions.

Orthodontic treatment of a transposed maxillary canine and first premolar in a young patient with Class III malocclusion

  • A 12-year-old girl was referred to our clinic for evaluation of an unaesthetic dental appearance. All permanent teeth were erupted, while the deciduous maxillary right canine was retained. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed a complete transposition of the maxillary left canine and first premolar involving both the crowns and the roots. Initial cephalometric analysis showed a skeletal Class III pattern, with a slight maxillary retrusion and a compensated proclination of the upper incisors. The patient's teeth were considered to be in the correct position; therefore, we decided to attempt treatment by correcting the transposition and using only orthodontic compensation of the skeletal Class III malocclusion. After 25 months of active orthodontic treatment, the patient had a Class I molar and canine relationship on both sides, with ideal overbite and overjet values. Her profile was improved, her lips were competent, and cephalometric evaluation showed acceptable maxillary and mandibular incisor inclinations. The final panoramic radiograph showed that good root parallelism was achieved. Two-year follow-up intraoral photography showed stable results.

Production, Purification, and Characterization of Antifungal Metabolite from Pseudomonas aeruginosa SD12, a New Strain Obtained from Tannery Waste Polluted Soil

  • A new strain, SD12, was isolated from tannery waste polluted soil and identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa on the basis of phenotypic traits and by comparison of 16S rRNA sequences. This bacterium exhibited broad-spectrum antagonistic activity against phytopathogenic fungi. The strain produced phosphatases, cellulases, proteases, pectinases, and HCN and also retained its ability to produce hydroxamate-type siderophore. A bioactive metabolite was isolated from P. aeruginosa SD12 and was characterized as 1-hydroxyphenazine ((1-OH-PHZ) by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral analysis. The strain was used as a biocontrol agent against root rot and wilt disease of pyrethrum caused by Rhizoctonia solani. The stain is also reported to increase the growth and biomass of Plantago ovata. The purified compound, 1-hydroxyphenazine, also showed broad-spectrum antagonistic activity towards a range of phytopathogenic fungi, which is the first report of its kind.

Changes to the Anti-oxidative Activity and Amino Acid Content of Arctium lappa Tea by Heat Treatment (열처리 조건에 따른 우엉차의 항산화 활성과 아미노산 함량의 변화)

  • In this study, the effect on the free amino acid content and anti-oxidative activity of Arctium lappa samples by heat treatment were compared to obtain data on the conditions required for properly processing the root as a raw material for tea. The results of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity assays showed that 180℃-4 min and 200℃-3 min treatments retained relatively high activity. All heat treatment conditions showed increased polyphenol content compared to the initial sample value of 42.72 mg/l, and the 180℃-4 min and 200-3 min treatments were higher than the others at 60.09 mg/l and 62.74 mg/l, respectively. In the free amino acid analysis of the A. lappa root tea, the tendency of the initial content was confirmed to decrease as temperature and time increased. Changes in phenylalanine, histidine, leucine, and isoleucine were found to be high, while aspartic acid and proline changes were relatively low. Overall, amino acid content decreased significantly under heating conditions above 180℃-3 min and 200℃-2 min. From these results, heat treatment of A. lappa root at 180℃-4 min was deemed optimal based on anti-oxidative activity and free amino acid content.
