  • A new concept for launching free-fall lifeboats, proposed by Yokohama National University is described in this paper. It has been pointed out that, using the conventional single-skid free-fall system, the potential for dangerous lifeboat motions (in which the lifeboat moves backward or jerks on the surface after entering the water) increases with the fall height of the lifeboat. One of the principal causes of this undesirable motion is vertical rotation of the lifeboat during its restricted fall at the edge of the launching skid. Thus a new "double-skid"launching concept is proposed to effectively eliminate the rotation of the lifeboat at the skid end and to enable the lifeboat to move smoothly after entering the water. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a series of model experiments and numerical simulations is carried out in which two lifeboat models with overall lengths of 1 meter and 6 meters are used. The effects of design parameters such as skid angle and skid height are investigated, and an example of the implementation of this new system at the stern of a large merchant ship is illustrated.

  • In general, core materials of rubble mound breakwater are used at a restricted range of 0.015㎥~0.03㎥. However, it is not satisfied with the standard design in over fifty percent of the cases. In this study, model tests and numerical analysis are employed to examine the range of core material that has no problem with capacity maintenance and stability of rubble mound breakwater. Model tests measure the porosities that are mixed in various ratios, to classify core materials by three parameters. The slope stability of rubble mound breakwater is investigated, using numerical analysis, with a friction angle and a unit weight. The change of unit weight, which is followed by the mixed rate of size core material, has no large affect on slope stability, and there is no problem with ensuring slope stability of the rubble mound breakwater.

  • The hydraulic cylinder is used for actuating the roller-link type rotating floodgate which controls the volume of water in the reservoir. The locating points of hydraulic cylinder are restricted to the limited space and determined to minimize the cylinder force necessary for actuating the floodgate. Generally, the head end point of cylinder is fixed at underground and the rod end point of cylinder is connected to the support link. Therefore there exist three design variables to be determined to minimize the cylinder force within the rotating range of floodgate. First, the mathematical model of the roller-link type rotating floodgate is derived to find the cylinder force corresponding to the floodgate angle. Then, the optimal locating point of hydraulic cylinder is searched using the complex method that is one kind of constrained direct search method.

  • Vehicle license plate recognition identifies vehicle as a unique, and have many applications in traffic monitoring field. In this paper, a vertical edge based algorithm to extract license plate within input gray-scale image is proposed. A size-and-shape filter based on seed-filling algorithm is applied to remove the edges that are impossible to be the vertical edges of license plate. Then the remaining edges are matched with each other according to some restricted conditions so as to locate license plate in input image. After license plate is extracted. normalized and segmented, the characters on it are recognized by template matching method. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can deal with license plates in normal shape effectively, as well as the license plates that are out of shape due to the angle of view.

  • In this paper the simulation of a thermodynamic power cycle for a 4-stroke, single-cylinder, spark-ignition engine was studied. In this simulation the cylinder volume was restricted to two zones, a burnt and an unburnt zone, and the convective heat transfer from cylinder contents to surroundings was considered. The chemical species in burnt gas considered was 12 species including H$_{2}$O, H$_{2}$, OH, H, N$_{2}$, NO, N, CO$_{2}$, CO, $O_{2}$, O and Ar. Using this model, computer program for compression, ignition and expansion processes was composed and pressure, temperature and composition of cylinder gas at each crank angle were computed. The composition of CO$_{2}$, CO, $O_{2}$ in the burnt gas when exhaust valve opens, the maximum temperature, the maximum flame speed and the combustion duration were also computed as a function of equivalence ratio. The relation between burnt mass fraction and burnt volume fraction was also computed.

  • This paper describes an efficient ambiguity searching method using additional constraints in 3-dimentional attitude finding GPS receiver design. For determining the integer ambiguity, the baseline length constraint, the angle constraint, the velocity constraint and the attitude constraint can be used for reducing the searching space. This paper describes the searching space algebraically and graphically. It is confirmed that the described restrictions are reasonable and the speed and the probability of ambiguity fixing are improved when the restricted searching spaces are applied Moreover, it is possible to design receivers of better quality by applying the method proposed in this paper.

  • In orchard or crop-growing environments, pesticides are sprayed using various nozzles to prevent pests and improve productivity. Nozzles currently in use are restricted for use in multi-purpose environments, thus, it is necessary to develop new nozzles. In this study, new two-phase nozzles are proposed to improve the performance of the nozzle (flow rate, spray angle, spray particle size). The performance of the two-phase nozzles are predicted through the CFD analysis and the performance of the nozzles is compared with the experiment. The experimental results showed that the proposed two-phase nozzles are available at relatively low operating pressure condition and are capable of extensive spray particle size control. Thus, the proposed nozzles are expected to be available in various orchard environments.

  • Wave energy is one of the most available sources of renewable energy in the world. It has been previously proven that the flapping foil can generate thrust forces using energy from the surface waves and an empirical formula was proposed to predict the thrust forces generated by a flapping foil consist of NACA0015 section (Kumar and Shin, 2019a). However, the proposed empirical formula was restricted to the head waves i.e. 0° azimuth angle which was not useful for the flapping foils encountering with oblique and following waves. Therefore, in this study, the thrust empirical formula was modified to include the effects of azimuth angles based on the experimentally obtained data. And the modified empirical equations were validated by the combination of foils experimentally.

  • The applicability of the ultrasonic C-scan inspection is restricted due to the deterioration of mechanical properties of specimen during the test. Therefore, the aim of this research is applied to Eddy Current (EC) test substitute for the C-scan inspection in CFRP tube containing defects. This research is to evaluate the EC signals for the inspection of CFRP tube containing various circular hole defects (20% to 100% depth to the specimen thickness) using the unloading specimen and radial loading specimen. This study was considered the following points; 1) Analysis of EC signals for the inspection of saw-cut defect and circular hole defect, 2) The evaluation of defect depths and EC signals relationship. 3) Variation of EC signal owing to the radial load. In conclusions, the high frequency such as 300∼500 kHz made it possible to the inspection of 40% to 100% defects. Particularly, in case of 20% defect, the EC signal was not detected due to the noise of micro-crack and delamination. While the depth of the hole defects were decreasing, the difference of the phase angle between unloading specimen and radial loading specimen was gradually increasing.
