  • In a previous study, design charts where proposed to help the torsional design of axially restricted reinforced concrete (RC) beams with squared cross section. In this article, new design charts are proposed to cover RC beams with rectangular cross section. The influence of the height to width ratio of the cross section on the behavior of RC beams under torsion is firstly shown by using theoretical and experimental results. Next, the effective torsional strength of a reference RC beam is computed for several values and combinations of the study variables, namely: height to width ratio of the cross section, concrete compressive strength, torsional reinforcement ratio and level of the axial restraint. To compute the torsional strength, the modified Variable Angle Truss Model for axially restricted RC beams is used. Then, an extensive parametric analysis based on multivariable and nonlinear correlation analysis is performed to obtain nonlinear regression equations which allow to build the new design charts. These charts allow to correct the torsional strength in order to consider the favourable influence of the compressive axial stress that arises from the axial restraint.

  • LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) panel cutting problem is a sort of two dimensional cutting stock problem. A cutting stock problem is problem that it minimizes the loss of the stock when a stock is cut into various parts. In the most research of the two dimensional cutting stock problem, it is supposed that the relative angle of a stock and parts is not important. Usually the angle is regarded as horizontal or perpendicular. In the manufacturing of polarizing film of LCD, the relative angle should be maintained at some specific angle because of the physical and/or chemical characteristics of raw material. We propose a mathematical model for solving this problem, a two-dimensional non-Guillotine cutting stock problem that is restricted by an arranged angle. Some example problems are solved by the C++ program using ILOG CPLEX classes. We could get the verification and validation of the suggested model based on the solutions.

  • Complex cervical spine fractures are a serious complications of maxillofacial trauma and associated with high mortality and neurological morbidity. Strict vigilance in preventing further insult to the cervical spine is a crucial step in managing patients who are at risk for neurologic compromise. We report a rare case of a right transverse process of atlas fracture with right-sided vertebral artery injury that was associated with a comminuted fracture of the body and angle of the mandible, which restricted mouth opening. Airway management was performed by an awake fiber-optic nasotracheal intubation, where neck movement was avoided with a cervical collar. Vertebral artery injuries may have disastrous consequences, such as basilar territory infarction and death, and should be suspected in patients with head and neck trauma. After mandibular plating, the patient was on cervical collar immobilization for 12 weeks and anti-coagulant therapy.

  • The original members of the De Stijl group, formed in neutral Holland during the First World War, included the painters Piet Mondrian, Bart van Leck and Theo van Doesburg, and the architects J.J.P. Oud and Jan Wils. The aim of the group was to create a language of form and color applicable to every sphere of modern life. The means of expression selected by the De Stijl artists was rigorously restricted, using only vertical and horizontal lines with the right-angle created where they cross, and for color, black, white and the primaries- red, yellow and blue. Of these simple elements consisted the compositions painted by Mondrian and van Doesburg during the years around the end of the First World War, and the famous red-blue chair made by Gerrit Rietvelt in 1917. They did share a common influence, Cubism, and they both emphasized contemporaneity. Otherwise they were quite different movements, both in theory and practice, except lot one further point of similarity.

  • Fault-tolerant gait generation of a hexapod robot with crab walking is proposed. The considered fault is a locked joint failure, which prevents a joint of a leg from moving and makes it locked in a known position. Due to the reduced workspace of a failed leg, fault-tolerant crab walking has a limitation in the range of heading direction. In this paper, an accessible range of the crab angle is derived for a given configuration of the failed leg and, based on the principles of fault-tolerant gait planning, periodic crab gaits are proposed in which a hexapod robot realizes crab walking after a locked joint failure, having a reasonable stride length and stability margin. The proposed crab walking is then applied to path planning on uneven terrain with positive obstacles. i.e., protruded obstacles which legged robots cannot cross over but have to take a roundabout route to avoid. The robot trajectory should be generated such that the crab angle does not exceed the restricted range caused by a locked joint failure.

  • Herein the water film was introduced to the hydrophilic area on the line patterned surface to solve the contradiction caused by surface roughness (high different wettability has advantage to control the droplet but high roughness for that high wettability difference causes obstruction of droplet moving). Thus the droplet on the water film could not be hindered to line direction but restricted to orthogonal direction, effectively. In addition, droplet behaviors according to droplet volume and line thickness were studied. Droplet fell off the line with narrowing the interface between the droplet and the water film on the line. When the droplet fell off the line, the plate angle was designated as a critical plate angle and it used as an indicator of surface capability to control the droplet. As a result critical plate angle increases as droplet volume decreases and line thickness increases.

  • Wave load prediction at zero forward speed using finite depth Green function is a well-established method regularly used in the offshore and marine industry. The forward speed approximation in deep water condition, although with limitations, is also found to be quite useful for engineering applications. However, analysis of vessels with forward speed in finite water depth still requires efficient computing methods. In this paper, a method for analysis of wave induced forces and corresponding motion on freely floating three-dimensional bodies with low to moderate forward speed is presented. A finite depth Green function is developed and incorporated in a 3D frequency domain potential flow based tool to allow consideration of finite (or shallow) water depth conditions. First order forces and moments and mean second order forces and moments in six degree of freedom are obtained. The effect of hull flare angle in predicting added resistance is incorporated. This implementation provides the unique capability of predicting added resistance in finite water depth with flare angle effect using a Green function approach. The results are validated using a half immersed sphere and S-175 ship. Finally, the effect of finite depth on a tanker with forward speed is presented.

  • The experimental study was carried out to investigate the pressure fluctuation, operating frequency, noise emission and combustion characteristics in an aero-valved pulsating combustor. Measurements of the pressure fluctuation, mean temperature and ion current inside the combustion chamber indicate that combustion phenomena are characteristically similar to those in the diffusion flame. The measured frequency schedue indicates that the acoustic theory of the quarter wave tube can be approximated to give the operating frequency, but correction factor must be involved to estimate the correct operating frequency. The spectral behavior of the noise emission exhibits that frequency bands with high noise intensity are narrowly restricted to the neighborhood of the operating frequency signalling the low-frequency combustion characteristics of the pulsating combustor. Measurements of the operating characteristics as variation of the fuel nozzle diameter and injection angle with 4 fuel nozzles have been made, and it was found that the system produced the stable operating conditions up to the turn down ratio of 3 when the fuel nozzle diameter is 1.2mm, and the optimum fuel injection angle is thought to be in the neighborhood of 30.deg. radially.
