This paper documents an experimental study of dynamic response of reinforced concrete beams following instantaneous removal of a bearing column. Four half-scale specimens representing two-span beam bridging across the removed column were tested. The test boundary conditions simulated rotational and longitudinal restraints imposed on a frame beam by the neighboring structural components. The gravity loads were simulated by attaching mass blocks on the beams at three locations. Dynamic loading effects due to sudden removal of a column were simulated by quickly releasing the supporting force at the middle of the specimens. The experimental study investigated the load-carrying capacity of beams restrained longitudinally at the boundaries and dynamic impact on forces. The tests confirmed the extra flexural strength provided by compressive arch action under dynamic loading. The tests also indicated that the dynamic amplification effects on forces were much lower than that assumed in the current design guideline for progressive collapse.

The concrete box girder members are extensively used as a superstructure in bridge construction. The load carrying capacity of concrete box girders in lateral direction is generally influenced by the sizes of haunch and web. The internal upper decks are restrained by the webs and exhibit strength enhancement due to the development of aching action. The current codes do not have generally consider the arching action of deck slab in the design because of complexity of the behavior. However, there are significant benefits in utilizing the effects of arching action in the design of concrete members. The main objective of this paper is to propose a rational method to predict the ultimate load of deck slab by considering various haunch sizes and web restraint effect of concrete box girder bridges. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and seven large-scale concrete box girders have been tested. A transverse analysis model of concrete box girders with haunches is proposed and compared with test data. The results of present study indicate that the ultimate strength is significantly affected by haunch dimension. The increase of strength due to concrete arcing action is reduced with an increase of prestressing steel ratio in laterally prestressed concrete box girders and increases with a larger haunch dimension. The proposed theory allows more realistic prediction of lateral ultimate strength for rational design of actual concrete box girder bridges.
Modular structures consist of standardized modules and their connections. A modular bridge pier is proposed to accelerate bridge construction. Multiple concrete-filled steel tubes (CFTs) using commercial steel tubes were chosen as the main members. Buckling restrained bracings and enhanced connection details were designed to prevent premature low-cycle fatigue failure upon cyclic loading. The pier had a height of 7.95 m, widths of 2.5 m and 2.0 m along the strong and weak axis, respectively. Cyclic tests were performed on the modular pier to investigate structural performance. Test results showed that four CFT columns reached yielding without a premature failure of the bracing connections. The ultimate capacity of the modular pier was reasonably estimated based on the plastic-hinge-analysis concept. The modular CFT pier with enhanced bracing showed improved displacement ductility without premature failure at the welding joints.
The internal or external restraint of thermal and dry shrinkage movements could thus generate tensile stresses in concrete pavement for early traffic opening. Restrained shrinkage and thermal stresses could produce microcracks in concrete which increase its permeability and accelerate its long-term deterioration under weathering and load effects. Fiber reinforced concrete is an effective approach to the control of microcrack and crack development under tensile stresses. This study aims at evaluation of the durability of high early strength concrete for early traffic opening and increase of service life. Three different types of regulated-set cement which recently has been used much in Korea were adopted. Fibers were added and their mixtures were compared with plain high early strength concrete mixture. The use of fibers increased durability performance of high early strength concrete using regulated-set cement than the corresponding plain mixtures.

In this study, to evaluate the shrinkage behavior of ultra high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) under restrained condition, restrained shrinkage test was performed according to ring-test mostly used at home and abroad. Ring-test was performed with the various thicknesses and radii of inner steel ring to give different degree of restraint. Free shrinkage and tensile tests were carried out simultaneously to estimate the degree of restraint, stress relaxation, and shrinkage cracking potential. Test results indicated that the average steel strain and residual tensile stress were reduced as the thicker inner steel ring was used, whereas degree of restraint was increased. The steel strain, residual tensile stress and degree of restraint were hardly affected by the size of radius of inner ring. In the case of all ring specimens, shrinkage crack did not occur because the residual tensile stress was lower than the tensile strength. About 39~65% of the elastic shrinkage stress was relaxed by the sustained interface pressure, and the maximum relaxed stress was increased as the thicker inner ring was applied. Finally, the degree of restraint with age was predicted by performing non-linear regression analysis, and it was in good agreement with the test results.

The effect of end restraints for adjoining members is the different variables influencing the column ultimate strength and the behavior. The propose of this study is to analyze eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete columns with the end restraind effect having rectangular cross-section and general boundary conditions. Accordingly, this investigation are to construct a typical analytical model of the reinforced concrete columns with general end boundary conditions. The mechanical components of the analytical model are to be rationally defined the actual behavior as possible, and the different variables influencing the behavior and the ultimate strength of the reinforced concrete columns are investigated by using a parametric study.

This paper presents the results from experimental study that investigated to explore the load transfer characteristics of post-tensioning anchorage zones. The experimental program investigated the primary variables which affect the ultimate load, lateral strains and crack width: concrete compressive strength, details of reinforcement and shape of anchorage. Through this research, it was found that the governing factor of the ultimate load was not compressive cylinder strength but tensile splitting strength. Ultimate load was increased and lateral strain was decreased as the ratio of spiral increased because the lateral expansion of th concrete inside the spiral was restrained by the spiral. Furthermore, the shape of anchorage which can diminish the wedge effect of anchorage and disperse the anchorage force in various depths was more effective.

This paper describes an experimental study on the crack and fracture behavior of the FRC column. The test were carried out as Fiber contents in the Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete and addition of Polypropylene Fiber in PFRC for evaluate the ability of ductility. In this study, the width and size of crack reduced remarkably and the progress of cracks were restrained by the steel fiber contents increasing, and in the case of PFRC the occurrence of initial crack reduced conspicuously. Accordingly, the addition of steel fiber in Reinforced Concrete Columns considerably prevent an unexpected buckle and rupture, secure durability and stability of columns.

Recently, the yearly amount of remicon used in Korea is approximately one hundred million cubic meter, and it caused a by-product, remicon waste sludge. The sludge produced by washing mixers or drums of remicon trucks is restrained by the law for waste disposal because its pH is over 12, so the expense for waste disposal is needed. Until now, the waste sludge water has been recycled and used for concrete materials as sludge water which is limited to 3% of cement unit weight. However, the study on the properties of the concrete mixed with this waste sludge is so insufficient that the quality of them can be hardly trusted. Therefore, the study on that will be discussed.

This paper studied the efficiency of retrofitting of reinforced concrete structure which was not designed to endure an earthquake. The earthquake in Kobe Japan showed that there was a great possibility of having an earthquake even in big city and the damages were concentrated on mid or low story buildings which were not considered to be protected from an earthquake, . This experiment used reinforced concrete structure which restrained side-by-side displacement to test durability against an earthquake. This study deals with the structural performance of reinforced concrete frame structures strengthened with steel materials.
