  • The scope of this study is the comparison between experimental results of tests performed on a base isolated building using helical wire rope isolators (WRs), and results of Nonlinear Response History Analyses (NRHAs) performed using SAP 2000, a commercial software for structural analysis. In the first stage of this research, WRs have been tested under shear deformation beyond their linear range of deformation, and analytical models have been derived to describe the nonlinear response of the bearings under different directions of loading. On the following stage, shaking table tests have been carried out on a 1/3 scale steel model isolated at the base by means of curved surface sliders (CSS) and WRs. The response of the structure under ground motion excitation has been compared to that obtained using numerical analyses in SAP 2000. The feasibility of modelling the nonlinear behavior of the tested isolation layer using multilinear link elements embedded in SAP 2000 is discussed in this paper, together with the advantages of using WRs as supplemental devices for CSSs base isolated structures.

  • We report on GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well infrared photodetectors (QWIPs) that can cover the spectral range of $3.6-25{\mu}m$. One advantage of the GaAs QWIPs is the wavelength tenability as a function of their structural parameters. We have performed a systematic calculation on the detection wavelength of a typical $GaAs/Al_xGa_{1-x}As$ multi-quantum-well photodetector, with the aluminum mole fraction (x) of $Al_xGa_{1-x}As$ barrier in the range of 0.15-0.43 and the quantum-well width range from 30 to 60 $60{\AA}$. Design and fabrication of a QWIP based on $GaAs/Al_{0.23}Ga_{0.77}As$ structure with $37{\AA}$-thick well width has been carried out. The calculated operation wavelength of the QWIP is in a good agreement with the experimental data taken by photo response and activation energy calculation from thermal quenching of integrated photoluminescence.

  • AIN thin films are deposited on Si (100) and $SiO_2$/Si substrates by using an RF magnetron sputtering method and by changing the conditions of deposition variables, such as RF power, $N_2$/Ar flow ratio, and substrate temperature ($T_sub$). For all the deposited AIN films, XRD Peak patterns are monitored to examine the effect of deposition condition on the crystal orientation. Highly (002)-oriented AIN films are obtained at following nominal deposition conditions; RF Power : 350W, $N_2$/Ar ratio = 10/20, T$_{sub}$ : $250^{\circ}C$, and working pressure = 5mTorr, respectively. AIN-based SAW devices are fabricated using a lift-off method by varying the thickness of AIN layer. Insertion losses and side-lobe rejection levels of fabricated SAW devices are extracted from their frequency response characteristics, which are also compared in terms of AIN thickness and substrate. Relationships between the film properties of AIN films and the frequency responses of SAW devices are discussed. It is concluded from the experimental results that the (002)-preferred orientation as well as the surface roughness of AIN film may play a crucial role of determining the device performances of AIN-SAW devices.s.

  • In this study, we investigated the detection properties of piezoresistive carbon nanotubes/polydimethylsiloxane (CNT/PDMS) devices with porous structures under applied pressure. The device, having dimensions of 10 mm × 10 mm × 5 mm, was fabricated with a porosity of 74.5%. To fabricate piezoresistive CNT/PDMS devices, CNTs were added using two different methods. In the first method, the CNTs were mixed with PDMS before the fabrication of the porous structure, while in the second, the CNTs were coated after the fabrication of the porous structure. Various detection properties of the fabricated devices were examined at different applied pressures. The CNT-coated device exhibited stable outputs with lesser variation than the CNT-mixed device. Moreover, the CNT-coated device exhibited improved reaction properties. The response time of the CNT-coated device was 1 min, which was approximately about 20 times faster than that of the CNT-mixed device. Considering these properties, CNT-coated devices are more suitable for sensing devices. To verify the CNT-coated device as a real sensor, it was applied to the gripping sensor system. A multichannel sensor system was used to measure the pressure distribution of the gripping sensor system. Under various gripping conditions, this system successfully measured the distributed pressures and exhibited stable dynamic responses.

  • Coupling adjacent building with supplemental damping devices is a developing method of reduced structural response due to wind and seismic excitations. The philosophy is to allow structures, vibrating at different frequencies, to exert control forces upon one another to reduce the overall responses of the system. This paper studies the effect of installing vibration control devices of two high rise building structures(49 stories and 42 stories) connected by sky-bridge. According to the analysis results the use of sky-bridge can be effective in increasing damping ratio of the system.

  • A reduction of the response of irregular structures subjected to earthquake excitation by control devices equipped by suitable control algorithm is proposed in this paper. The control algorithm, which is used, is the pole placement one. A requirement of successful application of pole placement algorithm is a definition-selection of suitable poles (eigen-values) of controlled irregular structures. Based on these poles, the required action is calculated and applied to the irregular structure by means of control devices. The selection of poles of controlled irregular structure, is a critical issue for the success of the algorithm. The calculation of suitable poles of controlled irregular structure is proposed herein by the following procedure: a fictitious symmetrical structure is considered from the irregular structure, adding vertical elements, such as columns or shear walls, at any location where is necessary. Then, the eigen-values of symmetrical structure are calculated, and are forced to be the poles of irregular controlled structure. Based on these poles and additional damping, the new poles of the controlled irregular structure are calculated. By pole placement algorithm, the feedback matrix is obtained. Using this feedback matrix, control forces are calculated at any time during the earthquake, and are applied to the irregular structure by the control devices. This procedure results in making the controlled irregular structure to behave like a symmetrical one. This control strategy can be applied to one storey or to multi-storey irregular buildings. Furthermore, the numerical results were shown that with small amount of control force, a sufficient reduction of the response of irregular buildings is achieved.

  • As the performance of computer hardware has been increased in recent years, more realistic computer generated objects can be created and presented in personal computers and portable digital devices as well. For this reason, digital contents, including computer graphics, require virtual objects that are more realistic and representable in real-time on various devices, thus it requires more computational costs. In order to support the production of contents including computer graphics, games, and animations on multi-platform, Unity or unreal engines are mainly used. To represent more realistic behavior of virtual objects in a simulation, a virtual object must collide with other virtual objects and present the plausible interaction, as in the real world. However, such dynamic simulation requires a large amount of computational cost, and most portable devices cannot provide these dynamic simulations in real-time. In this paper, we proposed a GPGPU computation based dynamic cloth simulation to represent collision and response with spherical object in real-time. We believe that the proposed method can be useful for readily producing realistic digital contents.

  • Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have emerged as a novel functional material that is being increasingly applied in diverse fields including medical, aeronautical and structural engineering to be used in the active, passive and semi-active structural control devices. This paper is mainly aimed at evaluating the ductility and response modification factor of the steel plate shear wall (SPSW) frames with and without the Ni-Ti shape memory alloys. To this end, different configurations were utilized, in which the walls were used in the first, third, middle, and all stories. The models were numerically analyzed using OpenSees Software. The obtained results indicate that improving the shape memory properties of alloys can greatly enhance the ductility and response modification factor. Furthermore, the model whose first and third stories are equipped with the SMA shear wall was found to be 290% more ductile, with a greater response modification factor compared to the unequipped frame.
