  • Complex Products may present more than one type of defects and these defects are not always of equal severity. These defects are classified according to their seriousness and effect on product quality and performance. Demerit systems are very effective systems to monitoring the different types of defects. So, classical demerit control chart used to monitor counts of several different types of defects simultaneously in complex products. S.M. Na et al.(2003) proposed the Demerit-CUSUM for the improvement of the demerit control chart performance and Nembhard, D. A. et al.(2001) and G.Y Cho et al.(2004) developed a Demerit control chart using the EWMA technique and evaluated the performance of the control chart. In this paper, we present an effective method for process control using the Demerit-CUSUM with fast initial response. Moreover, we evaluate exact performance of the Demerit-CUSUM control chart with fast initial response, Demerit-CUSUM and Demerit-EWMA according to changing sample size or parameters.

  • The coefficient of variation represents the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean, and it is a useful statistic for comparing the degree of variation from one data series to another, even if the means are drastically different from each other. Recently, the CV control chart is developed for monitoring processes in such situations. However, the CV control chart has low performance in detecting small shift. Due to the development of equipment and technique, currently, small shift of process occurs more frequently than large shift. In this paper, we proposes the CV-CUSUM control chart using CUSUM scheme which is cumulative sum of the deviations between each data point and a target value to detect a small shift in the process. We also found that the FIR(fast initial response) CUSUM control chart is especially valuable at start-up or after a CV-CUSUM control chart has signaled out-of-control.

  • When the production run is short and process parameters change frequently, it is difficult to monitor the process using traditional control charts. In such a case, the coefficient of variation (CV) is very useful for monitoring the process variability. The CV control chart is an effective tool to control the mean and variability of process simultaneously. The CV control chart, however, is not sensitive at small shifts in the magnitude of CV. The CV-EWMA(exponentially weighted moving average) control chart which was developed recently is effective in detecting a small shifts of CV. Since the CV-EWMA control chart scheme can be viewed as a weighted average of all past and current CV values, it is very sensitive to small change of mean and variability of the process. In this paper, we propose an FIR(Fast initial response) CV-EWMA control chart to improve the sensitivity of a CV-EWMA scheme at process start-up or out-of-control process. Moreover, we suggest the values of design parameters and show the results of the performance study of FIR CV-EWMA control chart by the use of average run length(ARL). Also, we compared the performance of FIR CV-EWMA control chart with that of the CV-EWMA control chart and we found that the CV-EWMA control chart gives longer in-control ARL and much shorter out-of-control ARL.

  • In this paper, an analysis method that considers the initial static displacement of structural members using an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system is presented. Newmark's dynamic analysis algorithm was improved to consider the effect of the initial static displacements of structural members. The effect of the initial static displacement on the maximum response according to the assumed duration of the blast load and natural period of the member was investigated. The effects of positive and negative static displacements on the maximum dynamic responses of structural members subjected to a positively applied blast load were also studied. Modified response charts for the shock-type and pressure-type waves are presented so that static displacements can easily be considered. Using a design example, we demonstrate the significance of the modified response chart that considers the static displacement. Based on the results of this study, the maximum response of a the structural member can be easily obtained whilst considering its initial static displacement. The modified response chart presented in this study can be used for the structural design of plants and military facilities.

  • This paper describes the vibration characteristic of second-order nonlinear systems subjected to parametric excitation. Emphasis is put on the examination of the hydrodynamic nonlinear damping effect on limiting the response amplitudes of parametric vibration. Since the parametric vibration is described by the Mathieu equation, the Mathieu stability chart is examined in this paper. In addition, the steady-state solutions of the nonlinear Mathieu equation in the first instability region are obtained by using a perturbation technique and are compared with those by a numerical integration method. It is shown that the response amplitudes of parametric vibration are limited even in unstable conditions by hydrodynamic nonlinear damping force. The largest reponse amplitude of parametric vibration occurs in the first instability region of Mathieu stability chart. The parametric excitation induces the response of a dynamic system to be subharmonic, superharmonic or chaotic according to their dynamic conditions.

  • Studies on motion response of a vessel is of great interest to researchers, since a long time. But intensive researches on stability of vessel during motion under dynamic conditions are few. A numerical model of vessel is developed and responses are analyzed in head, beam and quartering sea conditions. Variation of response amplitude operator (RAO) of vessel based on Strip Theory for different wave heights is plotted. Validation of results was done experimentally and numerical results was considered to obtain effect of damping on vessel stability. A scale model ratio of 1:125 was used which is suitable for dimensions of wave flume at National Institute of Technology Calicut. Stability chart are developed based on Mathieu's equation of stability. Ince-Strutt chart developed can help to capture variations of stability with damping.

  • Objectives: Promotion of food safety/eradicating adulterated food has been listed as one of the four major issues recently identified for action by the Korean government. Due to the related seriousness, the food industry has been encouraged to take steps to restore consumer confidence. In order to set guidelines for the creation of manuals for the response to a food safety crisis by the food industry, this study provided a suggested organization for a crisis response team and operating procedures for crisis response activities. Methods: The prototypes of an organizational structure and a set of standard procedures for a crisis response system were provided. Results: The results of the study suggested that a crisis response team should be comprised of four divisions of responsibility: information analysis, site response, communication and operational support. The organization chart and the role and functions for each division of the crisis response team should be indicated. Response activities will be more effective when the team features multi-disciplined staffing, such as public relations, food safety/technology/quality, sales/marketing, purchasing, production, distribution/logistics, regulatory affairs/legal, and consumer service specialists. This study created a flow chart for the total crisis response system, which included crisis and normal situations. A crisis response team should be continuously operated for both crisis and normal conditions. This study also suggested a scenario to explain the procedures for crisis response activities. Conclusion: In order to cope more effectively with a food safety crisis, the organizational structure and its functions should be defined clearly, and a detailed set of standard procedures for response activities should be offered.

  • We developed a design chart for very large floating structures through intensive hydroelastic analysis. Using this chart, one can predict the hydroelastic response of very large floating structures preliminarily at design stage without the cost-demanding hydroelastic analysis. This paper presents two new design charts based on the theory of VLFS. The purpose of the first design chart is to determine RAOs of the maximum longitudinal stress of VLFS considering properties of waves and structures. The design chart I can be applied to any sizes of VLFS in same aspect ratios and dimensionless stiffness parameters. The second design chart is developed to take into account the actual wave condition by using the Bretschneider spectrum with Beaufort sea state.
