The total global emission of $CO_2$ from soils is recognized as one of the largest fluxes in the global carbon cycle. Especially it is necessary to quantify the amount of $CO_2$ emitted by the organic material decomposition processes of microorganisms in the soil, because it becomes one of a factor for determining the carbon stocks in the soil. This study was conducted to estimate the impact of the Korean water deer(Hydropotes inermis)' feces to the soil organic matter. Also, effects of Korean water deer' feces on $CO_2$ emissions of soil and land use pattern dependent $CO_2$ flux quantification are studied. The organic materials in the Korean water deer' feces significantly changed organic matter content of soil and influenced the activity of soil microorganisms, both changing of respiration of the soil and physical chemical components in soil. In particular, C/N ratio and the $CO_2$ flux of soil of four regions (Rice paddy, Fallow ground, Salix koreensis community, Phragmites australis community) showed a statistically highly significant correlation (P<0.01) with the presence or absence of feces. $CO_2$ flux of soil affected by the feces was 2-20 times higher than the soil unaffected by the feces. This study has great significance to quantify the extent of the material circulation and its impact to the terrestrial ecosystem and soil zone throughout Korean water deer' feces. Feces of wildlife can affect soil and soil material circulation.
In order to assess the role of aeration in stormwater wetlands, oxygen supply and consumption in a wetland treating runoff from livestock farms were estimated and analyzed. Furthermore, oxygen mass balance was conducted during day time and night time. Internal production by algal photosynthesis dominated the oxygen production particularly in the shallow marsh due to the large amount of algae. Consequently, algal respiration was also the major oxygen depletion element with nitrification and biodegradation estimated as 5.35% and 6.43% of the total oxygen consumption. This excessive portion of oxygen consumption by algae was associated to the highly turbid water caused by the resuspension of sediment particles in the aeration pond, which also affected the subsequent wetland. Moreover, an abundance of oxygen was estimated during the day indicating that oxygen produced by algal activity is sufficient to meet the oxygen demand in the wetland. Thus, supplemental aeration was deemed not necessary at daytime. In contrast, oxygen was greatly depleted at night when algal photosynthesis stopped which induced denitrification. Therefore, it was suggested that supplemental aeration may be operated continuously instead of intermittently to avoid oxygen deficit in the wetland at night or it may be stopped entirely to further enhance denitrification.
This study was conducted to define the seasonal differences in the morphological characteristics, the photosynthetic abilities and the dark respirations of the 4-year old ginseng leaves. Chlorophyll-a content in the ginseng leaf was significantly decreased at September than at June but content of chlorophyll-b was not showed seasonal difference. At June, the amounts of chlorophyll a and b in the ginseng leaves grown in the back row were rather abundant than those grown in the front row, but no significant differencies were detected between rows at September. The estimated optimum light intensity for the photosynthesis of ginseng leaves was higher at June than at September and higher in the front row than the back row but was significantly decreased by air temperature above 25$^{\circ}C$. The light compensation point was elevated in higher temperature and at September than June. The amount of photosynthesis was significantly increased in the ginseng plant grown in the front row than the back row at June but the reverse was significant at September. The highest photosynthesis was observed in temperature range of 20 - 25$^{\circ}C$ at June and range of 15 -20$^{\circ}C$ at September. The optimum temperature range of photosynthesis was 21$^{\circ}C$ to 25$^{\circ}C$ at June and 14$^{\circ}C$ to 21$^{\circ}C$ at September, and that was higher in the back row than the front row. High temperature significantly stimulated the dark respiration of ginseng leaves and the respiratory quotients(Q$\_$10/) of the ginseng leaves showed a significant seasonal variation.

The storage life of satsuma mandarin(Citrus unshiu Marc. var. miyagawa) by the various pretreatment of temperatures; non-treated, room temperature, $10,\;20^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$ were investigated. The pretreated citrus fruits were stored at $4^{\circ}C$, 85% relative humidity. Weight loss of citrus fruits by the pretreatment at $35^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs was the lowest among that of others. Decay ratio of $35^{\circ}C$ pretreated fruits was increased at initial stages of storage, but was maintained low level after that, compared to other treatments. After 115 days storage, firmness of fruits was lowered by the softening, and decayed fruits were occurred increasingly. Ethylene evolution was increased between $55{\sim}65$ days after storage, and the amount was increasing rapidly after 115 days. It seemed to be derived from decayed fruits and physiological activities. $CO_2$ content in fruit was decreased at initial stages of storage, but was increased between $55{\sim}100$ days during storage periods. Acid content, soluble solids, total sugar and vitamin C were reduced gradually during cold storage, but the difference among treatments was not so great. Pretreated fruits at $35^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs before cold storage was effective on preventing from weight loss and respiration ratio. Optimum storage period of early variety of Satuma mandarin was regarded for 100 days on the basis of appeareance and taste.

We have investigated microclimatic controls on the spatiotemporal variations of net primary production (NPP) of a rugged forested watershed using the process-based biogeochemical model (BIOME-BGC). To validate the model simulation of water and carbon cycles at the plot scale, we have conducted field survey over deciduous broadleaf forest (DBF) and evergreen needleleaf forest (ENF) since 2000. The modeled values of soil temperature, soil moisture and soil respiration showed high correlation with those from the field measurements. The modeled seasonal changes of NPP showed high correlation with air temperature but no significant correlation with water related parameters. The precipitation frequency turned out to be the best climatic factor to explain the annual variation of NPP. Furthermore, NPP of ENF was more sensitive to precipitation frequency than that of DBF. With changes in vegetation cover and topography, the spatial distribution of NPP was of great heterogeneity, which was negatively correlated with the magnitude of NPP. Despite the annual precipitation of 1,400mm, NPP at the study site was constrained by the amount of water available for the vegetation. Such a modeling result should be verified by the field measurements.

Studies on carbon flux in the oceans have been highlighted in recent years due to increasing awareness about climate change, but the coastal ecosystem remains one of the unexplored fields in this regard. In this study, the dynamics of carbon flux in a vegetative coastal ecosystem were examined by an evaluation of net and gross ecosystem production (NEP and GEP) and $CO_2$ exchange rates (net ecosystem exchange, NEE). To estimate NEP and GEP, community production and respiration were measured along different habitat types (eelgrass and macroalgal beds, shallow and deep sedimentary, and deep rocky shore) at Gwangyang Bay, Korea from 20 June to 20 July 2007. Vegetative areas showed significantly higher ecosystem production than the other habitat types. Specifically, eelgrass beds had the highest daily GEP ($6.97{\pm}0.02g\;C\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$), with a large amount of biomass and high productivity of eelgrass, whereas the outer macroalgal vegetation had the lowest GEP ($0.97{\pm}0.04g\;C\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$). In addition, macroalgal vegetation showed the highest daily NEP ($3.31{\pm}0.45g\;C\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$) due to its highest P : R ratio (2.33). Furthermore, the eelgrass beds acted as a $CO_2$ sink through the air-seawater interface according to NEE data, with a carbon sink rate of $0.63mg\;C\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$. Overall, ecosystem production was found to be extremely high in the vegetated systems (eelgrass and macroalgal beds), which occupy a relatively small area compared to the unvegetated systems according to our conceptual diagram of a carbon-flux box model. These results indicate that the vegetative ecosystems showed significantly high capturing efficiency of inorganic carbon through coastal primary production.
The use of water by cities is increasing owing to industrialization, the concentration of population, and the enhancement of the standard of living. Accordingly, the amount of waste water is also increasing, and the degree of pollution of the water system is rising. In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to remove organisms and suspended particles as well as the products of eutrophication such as nitrates and phosphates. This study developed a high-end treatment engineering solution with maximum efficiency and lower costs by researching and developing a advanced treatment engineering solution with the use of Biosorption. As a result, the study conducted a test with a $50m^3/day$ Pilot Scale Plant by developing treatment engineering so that only the secondary treatment satisfies the standard of water quality and which provided optimal treatment efficiency along with convenient maintenance and management. The removal of organisms, which has to be pursued first for realizing nitrification during the test period, was made in such a way that there would be no oxidation by microorganisms in the reactor while preparing oxygen as an inhibitor for the growth of microorganism in the course of moving toward the primary settling pond. The study introduced microorganisms in the endogeneous respiration stage to perform adhesion, absorption, and filtering by bringing them into contact with the inflowing water with the use of a sludge returning from the secondary settling pond. Also a test was conducted to determine how effective the microorganisms are as an inner source of carbon. The HRT(Hydraulic Retention Time) in the nitrification tank (aerobic tank) could be reduced to two hours or below, and the stable treatment efficiency of the process using the organisms absorbed in the NAR reactor as a source of carbon could be proven. Also, given that the anaerobic condition of the pre-treatment tank becomes basic in the area of phosphate discharge, it was found that there was excellent efficiency for the removal of phosphate when the pre-treatment tank induced the discharge of phosphate and the polishing reactor induced the uptake of phosphate. The removal efficiency was shown to be about 94.4% for $BOD_5$. 90.7% for $COD_{Cr}$ 84.3% for $COD_{Mn}$, 96.0% for SS, 77.3% for TN, and 96.0% for TP.
n situ sediment oxygen demand (SOD), which takes place with the uptake of dissolved oxygen for biological metabolism and chemical oxidation in sediments, ranged from 1.57 to $12.55\;mg\;O_2\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$ in onshore of Lake Paldang from April to November 1999. SOD was influenced by the amount of organics and oxygen diffusion. Comparing the oxygen demands partitioning between overlying water and sediment during initial phase, SOD accounted for $63.8{\sim}94%$ of total oxygen demand in Lake Paldang. The chemical SOD and nitrogenous oxygen demand ranged $1.2{\sim}18.3%$ and $8.3{\sim}51.7%$ of total SOD, respectively. This result indicated that SOD in Lake Paldang occurred mainly by aerobic respiration and nitrification. Although the flow velocity could increase SOD within a certain limit, the effect of sediment depth on SOD was dependent on physicochemical properties of the sediment. This study showed that SOD can represent a significant portion of the total oxygen up-take in Lake Paldang. Therefore, the assessment of SOD might be necessary for the control of water quality.

We evaluated the physicochemical properties of four varieties of muskmelons (Thankyou, Beauty, Picnic, Sympony) during storage at $7^{\circ}C$. We stored Thankyou, Sympony, and Beauty varieties for 28 days at $7^{\circ}C$, while the Picnic variety was stored for 21 days. After the storage period, the mineral content of the Thankyou variety changed the least, by 2.36%, while that of the Sympony and Picnic varieties changed the most. The Thankyou variety also lost the least amount of free sugar content during storage. The Sympony variety had the highest vitamin C content at the beginning of the storage (26.0 mg%/100 g). After 14 days of storage, there was little difference in the vitamin C content of the varieties, which ranged from 11.5 to 12.5 mg%/100 g. The Picnic variety, which had the highest respiratory quotient, indicated lower storability than the other varieties. In a sensory evaluation, the Thankyou variety was considered to be the best in terms of consumer preference. However, the stem water loss seen in this variety tends to be the first thing that consumers see and may determine its merchantable quality.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the exercise periods changes of the waist stabilization exercise on the inspiratory and expiratory pressure of stroke patients. Thirty-six stroke patients were divided into 17 lumbar stabilization group(LSEG) and 19 general exercise group(GPEG). In both groups, inspiratory and expiratory pressure using a respiratory pressure device was measured over 4 and 8 weeks. At maximal expiratory pressure, LSEG was significantly increased in Before, 4 weeks and 8 weeks according to the period, but there was no significant difference in GPEG in all periods. At maximal inspiratory presusre, there was no significant difference in LSEG between before-4 weeks and 4-8 weeks, but there was a significant increase in Before-8weeks. There was no significant difference in all periods of GPEG group. There was no significant difference in the amount of change between the two groups. In this study, it was found that the lumbar stabilization exercise was effective in improving the expiratory pressure in the stroke patients. If the stroke patient continues to lumbar stabilization exercise, it is also an effective method for inspiratory pressure. Future studies are expected to study individual respiratory muscle measurements after lumbar stabilization exercise.
