  • Korean ginseng is a medicinally important perennial herb from the family Araliaceae. It has been cultivated for its highly valued medicinal properties for over 1,000 years in east Asian countries such as China, Korea, and Japan. Due to its longtime cultivation in shady areas, ginseng is frequently exposed to pathogenic infections. Plants protect themselves from microbial pathogens using an array of defense mechanisms, some of which are constitutively active, while others are activated upon pathogen invasion. These induced defense responses, controlled by defense-related genes, require tradeoffs in terms of plant fitness. We hypothesize that ginseng, as with other plants, possesses regulatory mechanisms that coordinate the activation of attacker-specific defenses in order to minimize fitness costs while attaining optimal resistance. Several classes of defense-related genes are induced by infection, wounds, irradiation, and other abiotic stresses. Both salicylates and jasmonates have been shown to cause such responses, although their specific roles and interactions in signaling and development are not fully understood in ginseng. This review summarizes possible defense-related genes in ginseng based on their expression patterns against biotic and abiotic stresses and describes their functional roles.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the distribution of vascular plants and their use from 2007 to 2009 in Mt. Unmum(Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-Do). The vascular plants were summarized as 605 taxa including 98 families, 304 genus, 514 species, 3 subspecies, 68 varieties, and 20 forma. Among the investigated 605 taxa, 21 rare and endangered plants, 29 Korean endemic plants were included. Based on the list of specially designated plants by Ministry of Environment, 70 taxa included Iris odaesanensis and Gastrodia elata were recorded in the investigated area. The naturalized plants were identified as 23 taxa and the percent of naturalized index(NI) was 3.8% of total 605 taxa vascular plants. Usage of 605 taxa were consists of 225 taxa(37.2%) of edible plants, 191 taxa(31.6%) of medicinal plants, 64 taxa(10.6%) of ornamental plants, 46 taxa(7.6%) of pasture plants, 18 taxa(3.0%) of timber plants, 14 taxa(2.3%) of fiber plants, and 3 taxa(0.5%) of industrial plants. To management of natural resource, we suppose that it is required to establish an ecological learning area to minimize human disturbance and an effective managemet strategy by continuous monitoring for ecosystem change.

  • A field survey was performed at the Human-made Wetlands along Boknaecheon of Juam Lake from March 2004 to October 2007 for the purpose of investigating changes of flora for 4 years since its creation. A total of 15 species including 10 families, 13 genera, 12 species and 3 varieties were planted at the Human-made Wetlands along Boknaecheon of Juam Lake which was completed in December 2002. The survey conducted in 2004, 15 months after creation of the Human-made Wetlands, revealed a flora composed of 47 families, 102 genera, 112 species and 19 varieties, 131 taxa in total. In 2007, further increase was registered with 46 species added compared to 2004 reaching 177 species in total. A 4-year monitoring of naturalized plants showed that no quick but constant increase was featured yearly in their number of species with 12 in 2004, 17 in 2005, 18 in 2006 and 19 in 2007. As for changes in life form, 13 species of perennial plants and 2 woody species, 15 in total, were planted initially but, in the survey 2004, 1- or 2-year old therophytes numbered 73, perennial plants 54 and woody species 4, indicating a large change of life form accompanied with increase in overall number of species. The number of 1- or 2-year old therophytes and perennial plants featured a steady increase each year from 2005 to 2007. The distribution ratio of 1- or 2-year old therophytes, however, showed a gradually decreasing tendency while perennial plants tended to increase, instead. As evidenced in changes of flora at the Human-made Wetlands, most of species in it have been determined to be fit or not within 1 to 2 years after its creation and, since the stable settlement of these species onward, its life forms have undergone stepwise changes together with the number of species and individuals in parallel with repeated extinction and penetration of plants.

  • Rosa rugosa is a medicinal, ornamental, and edible plant native to Eastern Asian countries, including Korea, Japan, and China. The aim of this study was to establish a system for biomass production and secondary metabolite accumulation during in vitro culture and acclimatization of Rosa rugosa. The highest rate of multiple shoot proliferation was achieved with $8.8{\mu}M$ benzyladenine (BA) (83.3%). However, the number of shoots (14.4 per explant) at $4.4{\mu}M$ BA was higher than that at $8.8{\mu}M$ BA. Compared to BA, a combination of thidiazuron (TDZ) and indole butyric acid (IBA) exhibited significantly lower shoot induction, with only 50.0~79.2% and 4.2~16.7% relative shoot formation, respectively. During acclimatization, shoots were sampled every week and their total phenolic contents were analyzed. Among various growth factors, fresh weight showed the most dramatic increase from the 3rd week (88.0 mg/plant) to 4th week (132.7 mg/plant). Total phenolics and flavonoids contents were the highest at $1^{st}$ week of acclimatization. Depending on developmental stages, total phenolics and flavonoids contents were higher in 1-yr-old shoots grown ex vitro than in those of older field-grown or in vitro-grown plants. Amongst different ages of field grown plants, 6-year-old plants, the oldest in this study, showed the lowest content in total phenolics.
