Resolution-independent Up-sampling for Depth Map Using Fractal Transforms

  • Due to the limitation of the bandwidth resource and capture resolution of depth cameras, low resolution depth maps should be up-sampled to high resolution so that they can correspond to their texture images. In this paper, a novel depth map up-sampling algorithm is proposed by exploiting the fractal internal self-referential feature. Fractal parameters which are extracted from a depth map, describe the internal self-referential feature of the depth map, do not introduce inherent scale and just retain the relational information of the depth map, i.e., fractal transforms provide a resolution-independent description for depth maps and could up-sample depth maps to an arbitrary high resolution. Then, an enhancement method is also proposed to further improve the performance of the up-sampled depth map. The experimental results demonstrate that better quality of synthesized views is achieved both on objective and subjective performance. Most important of all, arbitrary resolution depth maps can be obtained with the aid of the proposed scheme.

  • Early neutral evaluation (ENE) is a fairly recent form of alternative dispute resolution procedure used in the construction industry. In the UK, ENE is usually carried out on an entirely without prejudice basis, however the parties may agree that any or part of it may be referred to at trial or any subsequent hearing. The early neutral evaluation consists of a preliminary assessment of the issues in dispute for use as a basis for negotiations which may result in a settlement of the dispute. An independent person is appointed by the parties who reviews the case and provides an opinion, in written form and in some detail, with reasons on the merits of the matters in dispute. The opinion is non-binding but provides the parties with what in the opinion of the independent person a formal tribunal may decide whether a court or an arbitrator, if the dispute is not resolved. However, ENE has yet to take off in the construction industry in the UK. This paper will explain this procedure and explore the use of it in the UK and internationally, considering the benefits and drawbacks of its use. It will consider whether or not it is more effective than other early resolution forms such as mediation and adjudication. It will argue and conclude that it is a very useful cost effective procedure, particularly in the resolution of complex disputes, whether local or international.

스포츠중재의 필요성과 중재합의에 관한 고찰 (A Study on the Need for Arbitration and Agreement in Sports Disputes)

  • There is a need for disputes in sports to be settled by arbitration rather than a court ruling, taking the unique characteristics of sports into consideration. Arbitration is a form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). A dispute resolution system is regarded as: an arbitrator is selected by the agreement between the parties, and a binding decision is made, which the parties obey, consequently resulting in a final resolution. To resolve a dispute upon arbitration, there must be an arbitration agreement upon the free will of the parties. In relation to the arbitration agreement, however, there are some cases in which sports organizations have an arbitration clause in the articles of association, regulations or player registration application that call for settling disputes by arbitration. In such cases, the validity of the arbitration agreement may create doubt whether or not this sort of arbitration has been made by mutual agreement. Consequently this is required to be legally examined. The activities of a sports organization are recognized as part of private autonomy, and they include even the rights that establish regulations or rules. Nonetheless, the powers that such sport organizations are able to establish are not allowed without limit. However, sports activities and autonomy shall be protected as themselves. Therefore, if we give priority to arbitration upon the independent arbitrator and fair process by establishing an independent arbitral organization in charge of sports disputes to handle the effective resolution of disputes and protect sports autonomy and ask for a court decision if one party disobeys the arbitration, or the sports arbitration prepositive principle, it seems helpful to resolve the unfairness of compulsory jurisdiction and the clause for sports arbitration and protect the player's right of choice and of claims for trial.

Online structural identification by Teager Energy Operator and blind source separation

  • This paper deals with an application of adaptive blind source separation (BSS) method, equivariant adaptive separation via independence (EASI), and Teager Energy Operator (TEO) for online identification of structural modal parameters. The aim of adaptive BSS methods is recovering a set of independent sources from their unknown linear mixtures in each step when a new sample is received. In the proposed approach, firstly, the EASI method is used to decompose structural responses into independent sources at each instance. Secondly, the TEO based demodulation method with discrete energy separation algorithm (DESA-1) is applied to each independent source, and the instantaneous frequencies and damping ratios are extracted. The DESA-1 method can provide the fast time response and has high resolution so it is suitable for online problems. This paper also compares the performance of DESA-1 algorithm with Hilbert transform (HT) method. Compared to HT method, the DESA-1 method requires smaller amounts of samples to estimate and has a smaller computational complexity and faster adaption due to instantaneous characteristic. Furthermore, due to high resolution of the DESA-1 algorithm, it is very sensitive to noise and outliers. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been validated using synthetic examples and a benchmark structure.

Redundancy Resolution by Minimization of Joint Disturbance Torque for Independent Joint Controlled Kinematically Redundant Manipulators

  • Majority of industrial robots are controlled by a simple independent joint control of joint actuators rather than complex controllers based on the nonlinear dynamic model of the robot manipulator. In this independent joint control scheme, the performance of actuator control is influenced significantly by the joint disturbance torques including gravity, Coriolis and centrifugal torques, which result in the trajectory tracking error in the joint control system. The control performance of a redundant manipulator under independent joint control can be improved by minimizing this joint disturbance torque in resolving the kinematic redundancy. A 3 DOF planar robot is studied as an example, and the dynamic programming method is used to find the globally optimal joint trajectory that minimize the joint disturbance torque over the entire motion. The resulting solution is compared with the solution obtained by the conventional joint torque minimization, and it is shown that joint disturbance can be reduced using the kinematic redundancy.

  • The attitude of a vehicle can be precisely determined using GPS carrier phase measurements from more than two antennas attached to a vehicle and an efficient integer ambiguity resolution technique. Many methods utilizing the known baseline length as a constraint of independent elements of integer ambiguities are proposed to resolve integer ambiguity at real time. Three-dimensional search space is reduced to two-dimensional search space with this constraint. Thus the true integer ambiguity can be easily determined with less computational burden and fewer number of measurements. But there are still strong requirements for the real time integer ambiguity resolution, which uses single epoch measurement of long baseline. In this paper, a new constraint from the geometry of multiple baselines is derived. With this new constraint, two-dimensional search space is further reduced to one-dimensional search space. It makes possible to determine integer ambiguity with single epoch measurement. The proposed method is applied to real data to show its effectiveness.

  • This paper presents a fast IA(integer ambiguity) resolution method that determines the IA within short epochs with guaranteed reliability. Based on the fact that the search volume and the cost function are influenced by the selection of primary IAs in the plane intersection method, an IA resolution method is proposed that evaluates IA candidates repeatedly in an epoch with different combinations of primary IAs. In order to guarantee the reliability of the resolved IA with a certain probability, an inequality condition for selecting differencing operator is derived. Experiment results show that the proposed method consistently provides the true IA estimates within short time.

케이블 화재의 화염전파 해석을 위한 FDS 모델의 격자민감도 평가 (Assessment of Grid Sensitivity in the FDS Field Model to Simulate the Flame Propagation of an Electric Cable Fire)

  • The present study has been conducted to examine the effect of grid resolution on the predicted results for electric cable fire using pyrolysis model in FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator, version 5). The grid independent test for different grid resolutions has been performed for a PE coating cable and the grid resolution is defined by the non-dimensional characteristic length of fire and mean grid size. The calculated maximum heat release rate and mean flame spread rate were almost constant for higher grid resolution of 20${\sim}$25 and the computing time for the grid resolution takes approximately 20hours to solve flame propagation with pyrolysis model. The geometrical simplification of a electric cable dose not greatly affect on the maximum heat release rate and flame spread rate and the rectangular approximation of cable shape gives acceptable result comparing with the round cable with stepwise grid.

레이더 강우 및 분포형 수문모형의 공간해상도가 매개변수 추정에 미치는 영향 평가 (Impact Assessment of Spatial Resolution of Radar Rainfall and a Distributed Hydrologic Model on Parameter Estimation)

  • 본 연구는 레이더 강우와 분포형 수문모형의 공간해상도가 매개변수 추정 및 강우-유출 모의에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 레이더 강우는 비슬산 S밴드 이중편파 강우레이더에서 2012년 관측된 강우사상을 대상으로, R-KDP, R-Z, R-ZDR의 관계식에 의해 추정된 레이더 강우를 지상관측 강우와 비교하였다. 세 가지 강우 추정식에 의한 레이더 강우를 지상 관측 강우와 비교 시 유역 평균에 대해서는 모두 높은 일치도를 보였으며, 이는 지상 관측 강우에 대한 레이더 강우 보정의 영향으로 판단되었다. 그 중에서도 R-KDP에 의한 추정 강우가 비교적 높은 정확도를 보였으며, 이를 강우-유출 모형의 입력자료로 적용하였다. 강우-유출 모형으로는 GRM (grid based rainfall-runoff model) 모형을 이용하여, 낙동강 수계 금호강 유역을 대상으로, 200m, 500m, 1000m의 공간해상도로 입력자료를 구축하였다. 또한, 범용 매개변수 최적화 모형인 PEST(model independent parameter estimation tool)로 초기 포화도, 지표면 조도계수 및 토양 투수계수의 보정계수를 각 공간해상도 및 호우사상 별로 추정하였다. 매개변수 추정 결과, 200m 공간해상도 모형에서는 비교대상 강우사상에 대해 지표면 조도계수와 토양 투수계수 관련 보정계수가 비교적 안정적으로 추정되었으나, 500m, 1000m 공간해상도 모형에서는 강우사상에 따라 매개변수의 최적 추정 값의 변동이 확인되었다. 초기 포화도는 강우사상 별, 공간해상도 별로 일정한 경향을 보이지 않았다. 또한, 200m와 1000m 공간해상도에 대해 최적화된 매개변수를 다른 공간해상도에 적용한 결과, 1000m 공간해상도에 대해 보정된 매개변수를 200m 공간해상도 모형에 적용하면 첨두 홍수량이 증가하는 경향이 있었다.

  • 본 논문에서는 주성분 분석(principal component analysis; 이하 PCA) 및 독립성분분석(independent component analysis; 이하 ICA)을 이용, 이차원 영상을 분류하여 다중해상도에서 영상간의 거리를 측정하여 PCA 와 ICA 중에서 어느 것이 영상간의 상대적 식별을 용이하게 하는지 모의 실험을 통하여 확인하고자 한다. 모의 실험 결과로부터, ICA가 PCA에 비하여 영상간의 상대적 식별이 용이하여 빨리 수렴이 되는 것을 모의 실험을 통하여 확인하였다.
