  • Recently, the biggest issue in the electricity industry is the increase in renewable energy, and various technologies are being developed to ensure the capacity of the power system. In addition, super-grids linking power systems are being pushed to utilize eco-friendly energy between countries and regions worldwide. The HVDC transmission technology is required to link the power network between regions with different characteristics of the power system such as frequency and voltage. Until now, Korea has applied HVDC transmission technology that connects mainland and Jeju Island with submarine cables. But, the HVDC transmission technology is still developing for long-distance high-capacity power transmission from power parks on the east coast to load-tight areas near the metropolitan area. Considering the high population density and mountainous domestic environment, it is pushing for commercialization of the design technology of the ${\pm}500kV$ Double Bipole with metallic return wire transmission line to transmit large-scale power of 8 GW using minimal right of ways. In this paper, the insulation characteristics were studied for the design of double-bipole transmission tower with metallic return wire, which is the first time in the world. And the air insulation characteristics resistant to the various overvoltage phenomena occurring on transmission lines were verified through a full-scale impulse voltage test.

  • Philippines is the second world supplier of coconut by-products. As its first major genomics project, the Philippine Genome Center program for Agriculture (PGC-Agriculture) took the challenge to sequence and assemble the whole coconut genome. The project aims to provide advance genetics tools for our collaborating coconut researchers while taking the opportunity to initiate local capacity. Combination of different NGS platforms was explored and the Philippine 'Catigan Green Dwarf' (CATD) variety was selected with the breeders to be the crop's reference genome. A high quality genome assembly of CATD was generated and used to characterize important genes of coconut towards the development of resilient and outstanding varieties especially for added high-value traits. The talk will present the significant results of the project as published in various papers including the first report of whole genome sequence of a dwarf coconut variety. Updates will include the challenges hurdled and specific applications such as gene mining for host insect resistance and screening for least damaged coconuts (thus potentially insect resistant varieties). Genome-wide DNA markers as published and genes related to coconut oil qualitative/quantitative traits will also be presented, including initial molecular/biochemical studies that support nutritional and medicinal claims. A web-based genome database is currently built for ease access and wider utility of these genomics tools. Indeed, a major milestone accomplished by the coconut genomics research team, which was facilitated with the all-out government support and strong collaboration among multidisciplinary experts and partnership with advance research institutes.

  • Seismic retrofitting of existing buildings and design of earth-quake resistant buildings are important issues associated with earthquake-prone zones. Use of metallic-yielding dampers as an energy dissipation system is an acceptable method for controlling damages in structures and improving their seismic performance. In this study, the optimal distribution of dampers for reducing the seismic response of steel frames with multi-degrees freedom is presented utilizing the uniform distribution of deformations. This has been done in a way that, the final configuration of dampers in the frames lead to minimum weight while satisfying the performance criteria. It is shown that such a structure has an optimum seismic performance, in which the maximum structure capacity is used. Then the genetic algorithm which is an evolutionary optimization method is used for optimal arrangement of the steel dampers in the structure. In continuation for specifying the optimal accurate response, the local search algorithm based on the gradient concept has been selected. In this research the introduced optimization methods are used for optimal retrofitting in the moment-resisting frame with inelastic behavior and initial weakness in design. Ultimately the optimal configuration of dampers over the height of building specified and by comparing the results of the uniform deformation method with those of the genetic algorithm, the validity of the uniform deformation method in terms of accuracy, Time Speed Optimization and the simplicity of the theory have been proven.

  • This study involves investigating the correlation between variation of internal structure and heating temperature of alkali-activated fire protection materials using fly ash. Dehydration and micro crack thermal expansion occur in cement hydrates of cementitious materials heated by fire. Internal structure difference due to both the dehydration of cement hydrates and pore solution causes and influences changes in the properties of materials. Also, this study is concerned with change in microstructure and dehydration of the alkali-activated fire protection materials at high temperatures. The testing methods of alkali-activated fire protection materials in high temperature properties are make use of TG-DSC and mercury intrusion porosimetry measurements. The study results show that the alkali-activated fire resistant finishing material composed of potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate and fly ash has the high temperature thermal stability. These thermal stability is caused by the ceramic binding capacity induced by alkali activation reaction.

  • Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogenic bacterium that causes food poisoning, exhibits a strong capacity to form biofilm, and is highly resistant to antimicrobial agents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial characteristics of corosolic acid against S. aureus. S. aureus showed high susceptibility to corosolic acid in a concentration-dependent manner. The minimum inhibitory concentration and colony-forming ability determined by the broth microdilution method showed that corosolic acid had strong antimicrobial activity against the bacteria. The diameters of the inhibition zone and numbers of colony forming units at each concentration of corosolic acid were also measured. In addition, corosolic acid displayed potent biofilm inhibition activity against S. aureus at concentrations below its minimum inhibitory concentration. These results suggest that corosolic acid can be used to effectively prevent biofilm formation by S. aureus, thereby making S. aureus more susceptible to the action of antimicrobials.

  • Ninety isolates of Colletotrichum species from new persimmon tree twigs and 50 isolates from pepper plant fruits were isolated via single-spore isolation. Of the 140 isolates, 26 were examined for mycelial growth, carbendazim sensitivity, and ITS sequence. Four of the isolates from the persimmon trees, which were cultivated exclusively in an orchard, showed fast mycelial growth and sensitivity to carbendazim, while five of the pepper isolates showed slower mycelial growth and were resistant to the fungicide. However, 17 isolates from persimmon trees cultivated with pepper plants in the same orchard showed slow mycelial growth like the pepper isolates and they were sensitive to carbendazim like the persimmon isolates. ITS sequence analysis of these 27 isolates led to the identification of the 22 persimmon isolates as C. gloeosporioides and the five pepper isolates as C. acutatum. PCR with species-specific primers confirmed that the 90 isolates from persimmon were C. gloeosporioides whereas the 50 isolates from pepper were C. acutatum. The 90 persimmon isolates of C. gloeosporioides and 50 pepper isolates of C. acutatum were compared by a wound inoculation test to determine their capacity for host cross-infection. All of the C. acutatum isolates from pepper caused typical symptoms of anthracnose on the fruits of pepper plants and twigs of persimmon; they differed from the C. gloeosporioides isolates from persimmon, more than 90% of which were able to infect only persimmon. Amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis revealed the existence of two groups (C. gloeosporioides and C. acutatum isolates group). At 80% genetic similarity, the C. gloeosporioides group was defined within four clusters, while the C. acutatum group was within three clusters. However, these clusterings were unrelated with the virulence of Colletotrichum species against pepper fruits.

  • In this paper, review was made for the excavation method and optimum bench length for unstable tunnel face in case of rock classification type V in order to make the best use of in-situ bearing capacity. 3D FEM analyses were performed to investigate the influences on the tunnel face and adjacent area with regard to the pattern and number of bolts when face bolts were used as a supplementary measure. As a result of this study, full section excavation method with sub-bench is effective in reducing the displacement greatly due to early section closure. Displacement-resistant effects in accordance with the bolting patterns are grid type, zig-zag type and then circular type in order of their effect. And horizontal extrusion displacement of tunnel face reduces as the number of bolts increase. A grid type face bolt covering $1.5m^2$ of tunnel face could secure the face stability in case of full section excavation method with sub-bench.

  • A test program was conducted on seismic-resistant steel moment connections constructed using Reduced Beam Sections with beam web openings. In the connection, in order to enhance ductility capacity under severe cyclic loads, a portion of the beam web near the beam-to-column connection is cut out instead of the beam flange as in dogbone connections. A total of 4 large scale specimens were tested in this program. The specimens were all made using $H-458{\times}417{\times}30{\times}50$ sections for the columns and $H-792{\times}300{\times}14{\times}22$ sections for the beams. Test specimens showed excellent performance similar to that of dogbone connections.
