The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color stability of resin cements with accelerated test. Four dual curing resin cements: Panavia-F (KURARAY). Duolink (BISCO), Variolink-II (Ivoclar Vivadent), and RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE) and 1 self curing resin cement: Resiment CE (j. l. Blosser) were used in this study. In control group, Gradia Anterior (GC) composite resin and Tescera Dentin (Bisco) indirect composite were used. Ten disk shape specimens were made from each resin cement. The specimens were subjected to an accelerated aging process in a refrigerated bath circulator at 60$^{\circ}C$ for 15 and 30 days. Spectrophotometric analyses were made before and after 15 days and 30 days of accelerated aging time. The color characteristics ($L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$) and the color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) of the specimens before and after immersion were measured and computed. Regardless of type of the resin cements, $L^*$ value was decreased and $a^*$ value was increased, but there were no significant difference. But $b^*$ value was increased significantly (p < 0.05). Tescera inlay showed least color change (p < 0.05), but Gradia showed notable color change after 15 days. After 30 days on accelerated aging, ${\Delta}E^*$ value was increased (Panavia-F < Variolink-II < Resiment CE < Duolink < Unicem) (p < 0.05). but there were no significant difference among Panavia-F, Variolink-II, and Resiment CE groups. After 30 days of accelerated aging, ${\Delta}E^*$ value of all resin cements were greater than 3.0 and could be perceived by the human eye.

The resin modified glass ionomer cements(RMGICs) have been used for years since 1989. Recently it has been developed for luting of fixed restorations. To evaluate the bond strength and marginal leakage of RMGICs for luting usage, the 80 extracted human molars which had uniform area of exposed dentin were cemented with 3 types of RMGICs(Fuji Duet, Advance, Vitremer), a conventional Glass Ionomer Cement(GIC-Fuji I), and a resin cement (Panavia 21) to base metal alloy(Ni-Cr-Be). After thermocycling the specimens were immersed in basic fuschin dye for measuring marginal leakage. The shear bond strength was measured with Instron and the maximum dye penetration was measured to 0.1mm. The types of fractured patterns were determined with stereoscope(${\times}7.5$). The results are as follows. 1. The difference between 3 RMGICs and a conventional GIC in shear bond strength was not statistically significant. It seemed that RMGICs had lower shear bond strength than resin cement. (p<0.01) 2. The mean scores of marginal leakage had no significant difference between the resin cement and 3 RMGICs but it was much higher in conventional GIC than the RMGICs (p<0.05) 3. It was determined that the manufacturer and the methods of dentin pretreatment determined the pattern of fracture surfaces and the frequency of adhesive failure between teeth and 3 RMGICs standed as in following order - Vitremer, Advance, Fuji Duet. (p<0. 01) When the fracture pattern was analyzed, it could be said that the materials and the method of dentin pretreatment have much effect on bonding states. This means that the dentin bonding agents should be improved. But the limited products in this experiment can not evaluate the physical properties of the entire RMGICs. Therefore a further study which can evaluate various RMGICs should be in progress to develope better cements.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatment of FRC-Post on bonding strength to resin cements. Materials and Methods: Pre-surface treated LuxaPost (DMG), Rely-X Fiber Post (3M ESPE) and self adhesive resin cement Rely-X Unicem (3M ESPE), conventional resin cement Rely-X ARC (3M ESPE), and Rely-X Ceramic Primer (3M ESPE) were used. After completing the surface treatments of the posts, posts and resin cement were placed in clear molds and photo-activation was performed. The specimens were sectioned perpendicular to the FRC-Post into 2 mm-thick segments, and push-out strength were measured. The results of bond strength value were statistically analyzed using independent samples t-test and oneway ANOVA with multiple comparisons using Scheffe's test. Results: Silanization of posts affect to the bond strength in LuxaPost, and did not affect in Rely-X Fiber Post. Rely-X ARC showed higher value than Rely-X Unicem. Conclusions: Silanization is needed to enhance the bond strength between LuxaPost and resin cements.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength on dentin of bonding agents based on glass ionomer cements, and to establish the appropriate method of bonding which has biological safety and decrease the pulpal damage. Fuji Bond LC, Advance, All Bond 2 and Scotchbond Multipurpose were applicated on occlusal dentin layer in acrylic resin block. Each group was composed of 10 specimens and the shear bond strenth between dentin layer and composite resin was measured with the Universal Testing Machine and analyzed. The result were as follows: 1. When using ANOVA and Scheffe' s multiple range test, there were not statistical differences among the four group. (P < 0.05) 2. The shear bond strength was high in the order of C, D, A. B and bond strength of group B showed relatively lower. 3. In digital image processing, there were not significant differences on morphology of failure surface.

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of resin cements and ceramic etching on shear bond strength of Empress 2 ceramic and observe the change of microstructure of ceramic according to etching time. Sixty-six square ceramic specimens($6{\times}6{\times}1.5mm$) were prepared. 6 specimens were etched with different etching times(0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 60 seconds) and observed by means of a scanning electron microscope(SEM). Other sixty specimens were divided into 6 groups with 10 specimens in each group. 3 groups were etched with 4% hydrofluoric acid and each groups was bonded with 3 resin cements(Variolink II, Super-Bond C&B, Panavia F). Each specimen was subjected to a shear load in an Instron at a cross-head speed of 0.5mm/min and was observed with SEM after mechanical testing to establish modes of failure. The results were as follows : 1. Within etched groups, Variolink II and Super-Bond C&B exhibited significantly greater bonding strengths than Panavia F(p<0.05) 2. Bond strength of etching groups had three to five times greater than that of no-etching groups. 3. All of no-etching groups showed adhesive failure and etching groups mostly showed mixed failure. And, 20-second etching specimen showed the most distinct lithium disilicate crystal. so it is considered that 20-second etching is optimal time for bonding.
PURPOSE. This laboratory study assessed the effect of different dentin cleaning procedures on shear bond strength of resin cements for recementing prosthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A $4{\times}4$ flat surface was prepared on the labial surface of 52 maxillary central incisors. Metal frames ($4{\times}4{\times}1.5mm$) were cast with nickel-chromium alloy. All specimens were randomly divided into 2 groups to be cemented with either Panavia F2.0 (P) or RelyX Ultimate (U) cement. The initial shear bond strength was recorded by Universal Testing Machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Debonded specimens were randomly allocated into 2 subgroups (n = 13) according to the dentin cleaning procedures for recementation. The residual cement on bonded dentin surfaces was eliminated with either pumice slurry (p) or tungsten carbide bur (c). The restorations were rebonded with the same cement and were subjected to shear test. Data failed the normality test (P < .05), thus were analyzed with Mann Whitney U-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and two-way ANOVA after logarithmic transformation (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. The initial shear bond strength of group P was significantly higher than group U (P = .001). Pc and Uc groups presented higher bond strength after recementation compared to the initial bond strength. However, it was significant only in Pc group (P = .034). CONCLUSION. The specimens recemented with Panavia F2.0 provided higher bond strength than RelyX Ultimate cement. Moreover, a tungsten carbide bur was a more efficient method in removing the residual resin cement and increased the bond strength of Panavia F2.0 cement after recementation.
Retention is one of the major factors deciding the success and longevity of resin bonded restorations. The purpose of this study was to find a better resin cement and metal surface treatment method that would enhance the bonding strength. The bonding surfaces of Verabond, one of Ni-Cr-Be alloys, were treated with sandblasting(Group 1), sandblasting and EZ-Oxisor(Group 2), sandblasting and silicoating(Group 3), and than thay were bonded with All-Bond C & B, Panavia 21, Superbond C & B. The specimens were thermocycled, and the tensile bond strength was measured using the unive-rsal testing machine. Also the mode of bond failure was observed. The results were as folows. 1. The Superbond C & B showed the highest bond strength among the three resin cements and decreased in the order of Panavia 21, All-Bond C & B. There was significant differe-nce among them(p<0.05). 2. Group 3 showed the highest bond strength among the three metal surface treatment methods, and there was significant difference compared with Group 1 and Group 2(p<0.05). But there was no significant difference between Group 1 and Group 2. 3. Observing the mode of bond failure, Superbond C & B and Panavia 21 showed mostly cohesive failure in all groups. All-Bond C & B showed all types of bond failure in Group 3, but Group 1 and Group 2 showed only adhesive failure. 4. According to the results of this study, the silicoating method and 4-META containing resin cement were considered to be more acceptable for resin bonded restoration.
The purpose of this study was to observe the microleakage of composite resin filling using several glass ionomer cements. The Class V cavities of eighty noncarious human molars were prepared at the cementoenamel juction on the facial and lingual surfaces of each tooth with a No.330 carbide bur in a high speed handpiece. The cavity dimensions were $3.0{\pm}0.5mm$ wide, $2.0{\pm}0.5mm$ high, and $1.5{\pm}0.5mm$ deep and all enamel cavosurface margins were beveled with a No.558 carbide bur in low speed handpiece. The bevel was approximately $45^{\circ}$ and 0.5-1.0mm in width. A total of the 160 cavities was divided into four groups, and then 144 cavities among them were three experimental groups and remaining sixteen cavities were control group. All of the prepared cavities were restored as follows: group 1 : Preparations were restored with there three glass ionomer cements. group 2 : Preparations were restored with a composite resin with three glass ionomer cement bases placed $0.2{\pm}0.1mm$ short of the cavosurface margin. group 3 : Preparations were restored with a composite resin with three glass ionomer cement bases extened to the cavosurface margin. group 4 : As control group, preparations were restored with a composite resin, PALFIQUE. The specimens were then thermocycled in a range of $6^{\circ}C-60^{\circ}C$ and immersed in a bath of 2.0% aqueous basic fuchsin solution for 24 hours. Dye penetration was read on a scale of 0 to 4 by Tani and Buonocore's method. The following conclusions were derived from the results obtained; 1. All groups showed significantly more leakage at the gingival margins than at the occlusal margins(p<0.0005). 2. At the gingival margins, group 1 showed less leakage than group 3(p<0.01) and group 4(p<0.0005), while group 3 exhibited less leakage than group 2(p<0.01) and group 4(p<0.0005). 3. At the occlusal margins, group 4 showed less leakage than group 3(p<0.1) and group 1(p<0.005), while group 3 exhibited less leakage than group 2(p>0.1) and group 1(p<0.025).
PURPOSE. Post surface conditioning is necessary to expose the glass fibers to enable bonding between fiber post and resin cement. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different surface conditioning on tensile bond strength (TBS) of a glass fiber reinforced post to resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In this in vitro study, 40 extracted single canal central incisors were endodontically treated and post spaces were prepared. The teeth were divided into four groups according to the methods of post surface treatment (n=10): 1) Silanization after etching with 20% $H_2O_2$, 2) Silanization after airborne-particle abrasion, 3) Silanization, and 4) No conditioning (Control). Adhesive resin cement (Panavia F 2.0) was used for cementation of the fiber posts to the root canal dentin. Three slices of 3 mm thick were obtained from each root. A universal testing machine was used with a cross-head speed of 1 mm/minute for performing the push-out tests. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests were used for analyzing data (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS. It is revealed that different surface treatments and root dentin regions had significant effects on TBS, but the interaction between surface treatments and root canal regions had no significant effect on TBS. There was significant difference among $H_2O_2$ + Silane Group and other three groups. CONCLUSION. There were significant differences among the mean TBS values of different surface treatments. Application of hydrogen peroxide before silanization increased the bond strength between resin cements and fiber posts. The mean TBS mean values was significantly greater in the coronal region of root canal than the middle and apical thirds.

PURPOSE. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pretreatment of three different universal adhesives (Single Bond Universal [SBU], All-Bond Universal [ABU], and Prime&Bond universal [PBU]) on the bonding durability of an adhesive (Panavia F 2.0, PF) and a conventional (Duo-Link, DL) resin cements to air-abraded zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Rectangular-shaped zirconia specimens were prepared. The chemical composition and surface energy parameters of the materials were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and contact angle measurement, respectively. To evaluate resin bonding to the zirconia, all the bonding specimens were immersed in water for 24 h and the specimens to be aged were additionally thermocycled 10000 times before the shear bond strength (SBS) test. RESULTS. The materials showed different surface energy parameters, including the degree of hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity. While the DL/CON (no pretreatment) showed the lowest SBS and a significant decrease in the value after thermocycling (P < .001), the PF/CON obtained a higher SBS value than the DL/CON (P < .001) and no decrease even after thermocycling (P = .839). When the universal adhesives were used with DL, their SBS values were higher than the CON (P < .05), but the trend was adhesive-specific. In conjunction with PF, the PF/SBU produced the highest SBS followed by the PF/ABU (P = .002), showing no significant decrease after thermocycling (P > .05). The initial SBS of the PF/PBU was similar to the PF/CON (P = .999), but the value decreased after thermocycling (P < .001). CONCLUSION. The universal adhesive pretreatment did not necessarily show a synergistic effect on the bonding performance of an adhesive resin cement, whereas the pretreatment was beneficial to bond strength and durability of a conventional resin cement.
