  • Disinfection of electrolyzed water (EW) on strawberry by immersion washing and quality changes during storage at $5^{\circ}\C$ was compared with one immersed in chlorine water and not treated. Total count of strawberry washed with EW by immersion in 10 volumes of EW for 20 min was decreased to about 2 log cycle compared to the untreated And rate of microbial growth during storage was lower than ethers. Decaying ratio in strawberry treated with electrolyzed low-alkalinewater (EW-2) showed lower as of 10% level after 5 days of storage compared) to the untreated and the treated with chlorine water (CW). Hardness in the treatment of EW was not changed significantly until 3 days of storage, after then rather increased. Change in surface color of strawberries was observed; L value in the CW treated and the untreated increased whereas it decreased in the treatment of EW. And color difference(${\Delta}E$) during storage was observed the lowest in the untreated until 3 days of storage. The initial value of residual chlorine in the treatment of EW was at the level of $0.04{\sim}0.06ppm$, and $1{\sim}3$ days later showed almost the equal value to level of $0.02{\sim}0.03ppm$ in all treatments. Sensory characteristic during storage was preferable on strawberry washed with EW (EW-1 and EW-2) to the other treatments.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of soil grain size and its distribution on soil-water characteristic. To do this, soil-water characteristic tests were conducted on Saemangeum silt using the axis translation technique. For comparison, the test was also conducted on Jumunjin sand. Using the test results, the soil-water characteristic curves (SWCCs) of Saemangeum silt and Jumunjin sand were predicted by Van Genuchten model. By comparison and analysis between two SWCCs, the silt shows higher values of matric suction, water content, and air entry value than the sand. On the other hand, the sand has higher values of Van Genuchten model parameters of ${\alpha}$, $n$, $m$ than the silt. It indicates that the SWCC is significantly dependent on the structure of soils. In other words, if a soil has relatively high grain size and poor grain size distribution curve, the values of saturated volumetric water content, residual volumetric water content, and air entry value are small, and the variation of volumetric water content is high in accordance with the matric suction variation, and consequently it shows a narrow range of funicular region.

  • This study analyzed the physicochemical properties and combustion characteristics of dry food waste to evaluate the possibility of using food waste as a solid refuse fuel (SRF). The characteristics of dry food waste as a fuel were analyzed by comparing the difference in properties with SRF, and the combustion characteristics after conversion into fuel were identified. Ultimate analysis, proximate analysis, calorific value analysis, and TGA analysis were conducted using two types of food waste and two types of SRF, and the following results were obtained. The moisture content and ash content of dry food waste were 1.7~10.0 wt.% and 7.8~11.7 wt.%, respectively, which satisfied the quality standards for SRF. The low calorific value of dry food waste was 4,000 ~ 4,720 kcal/kg, which was higher than the quality standard of 3,500 kcal/kg for SRF. As a result of TGA analysis of dry food waste, the combustion reaction started at about 200 ℃ and the highest burning rate was at about 500 ℃. After moisture evaporation between 100 and 200 ℃, initial volatile matter, carbon and residual volatile matter were released and burned between 200 and 500 ℃. Based on the high calorific value and low moisture and ash content of dry food waste, it is considered that it is possible to convert dry food waste into SRF through the application of efficient drying technology and strict quality standard inspection in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to figure out the effect of pressurized grouting on the pullout resistance and the group effect of the compression ground anchor by performing pilot-scale chamber tests and field tests. The laboratory tests are carried out for 3-types of soils which are abundant in the Korean peninsular. Experimental results showed that the enlargement of anchor diameters estimated from the cavity expansion theory matches reasonable well with that obtained from experiments. Moreover, the required injection time as a function of the coefficient of permeability of each soil type was proposed. A series of in-situ anchor pullout tests were also performed to experimentally figure out the effect of pressurized grouting on the pullout resistance. Experimental results also showed that the effect of the pressurized grouting is more prominent in a softer ground with smaller SPT-N value in all of the following three aspects: increase in anchor diameter; pullout resistance; and surface roughness. The pressurized grouting effect in comparison with gravitational grouting was found to be almost nil if the SPT-N value is more than 50. Based on experimental results, a new equation to estimate the pullout resistance as a function of the SPT-N value was proposed. And based on in-situ group anchor pullout tests results, a new group effect equation was proposed which might be applicable to decomposed residual soils which are abundant in the Korean peninsular.

  • A series of model tests were performed to investigate the soil arching effect in embankments supported by piles with geosynthetics. In the model tests, model piles with isolated cap were inserted through the holes in a steel plate, which could be operated up and down. Then geosynthetics was laid on the pile caps below sand fills. The settlement of soft ground was simulated by lowering the plate. As the plate was lowered, the soil arching was mobilized in the embankments. The deformation of both the sand fills and geosynthetics were captured by camera. Also the loads acting on pile cap and the tensile strain of geosynthetics were monitored by data logging system. Model tests showed that the embankment loads transferred on pile cap by soil arching Increased rapidly with settlement of the soft ground. In case of the absence of geosynthetics, the loads acting on pile caps dropped to residual value after peak value, whereas loads on pile caps gradually increased until constant value in case of geosynthetic-reinforced. This illustrated that reinforcing with the geosynthetics has a good effect to restrain the settlement of embankments. Also, the deformation shape of geosynthetics between pile caps was circular. The embankment loads transferred on pile caps can be estimated by considering both soil arching and tensile strain of geosynthetics in embankments supported by piles with geosynthetics.

  • Planetary Boundary Layer Height (PBLH) is a major input parameter for weather forecasting and atmosphere diffusion models. In order to estimate the sub-grid scale variability of PBLH, we need to monitor PBLH data with high spatio-temporal resolution. Accordingly, we introduce a LIdar observation VEhicle (LIVE), and analyze PBLH derived from the lidar loaded in LIVE. PBLH estimated from LIVE shows high correlations with those estimated from both WRF model ($R^2=0.68$) and radiosonde ($R^2=0.72$). However, PBLH from lidar tend to be overestimated in comparison with those from both WRF and radiosonde because lidar appears to detect height of Residual Layer (RL) as PBLH which is overall below near the overlap height (< 300 m). PBLH from lidar with 10 min time resolution shows typical diurnal variation since it grows up after sunrise and reaches the maximum after 2 hours of sun culmination. The average growth rate of PBLH during the analysis period (2014/06/26 ~ 30) is 1.79 (-2.9 ~ 5.7) m $min^{-1}$. In addition, the lidar signal measured from moving LIVE shows that there is very low noise in comparison with that from the stationary observation. The PBLH from LIVE is 1065 m, similar to the value (1150 m) derived from the radiosonde launched at Sokcho. This study suggests that LIVE can observe continuous and reliable PBLH with high resolution in both stationary and mobile systems.

  • We, for the first time, reported molecular sequences of large subunit ribosomal DNA Dl-D3 region of A. hiranoi, A. leei and A. satoanum hitherto unreported. In addition, this study presented the full-length sequences of A. affine, A. fraterculus, A. catenella and A. tamarense occurring in Korean coastal waters. In total, 17 Alexandrium morphospecies were subjected to the phylogenetic analysis using the Maximum-likelihood (ML) method. The alignment result of sequences of A. hiranoi and A. pseudogonyaulax showed that there were only two substitutions without length heterogeneity implying their genetic affiliation. In ML tree, A. leei formed a deeply diverging branch probably because of the accelerated evolutionary rate, and its phylogenetic position was so ambiguous to resolve the phylogenetic relationship to the residual taxa. An A. satoanum culture showing morphological variation in the sulcal plate formed an independent divergent branch with consistent sister relationship to A. hiranoi/A. pseudogonyaulax clade supported by the high posterior probability (PP) value. Blast search in GenBank showed the sequence data of A. affine, A. fraterculus, A. catenella and A. tamarense corresponded to their morphological species designation. In ML tree, Alexandrium species were commonly split into four main clades. The inter-clade relationships were not clear and usually supported by the week PP values. In general, the sulcal plate of Alexandrium species seemed to reflect the true phylogeny at the main clade level, and the connection between the 1 and the apical pore complex seemed to reflect the phylogeny at the subclade level.

  • DVC(Distributed Video Coding) technique is a new paradigm, which is based on the Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv theorems. DVC offers not only flexible partitioning of the complexity between the encoder and decoder, but also robustness to channel errors due to intrinsic joint source-channel coding. Many conventional research works have been focused on the light video encoder and its rate-distortion performance improvement. However, in this paper, we propose a new DVC codec which is effectively applicable for error-prone environment. The proposed method adopts a quantiser without dead-zone and symmetric Gray code around zero value. Through computer simulations, the proposed method is evaluated by the bit errors position as well as the number of burst bit errors. Additionally, it is shown that the maximum and minimum transmission rate for the given application can be linearly determined by the number of bit errors.

  • The condition assessment of engineering systems has increased in importance because the manpower needed to operate and supervise various plants has been reduced. Especially, induction motors are at the core of most engineering processes, and there is an indispensable need to monitor their health and performance. So detection and diagnosis of motor faults is a base to improve efficiency of the industrial plant. In this paper, a model-based fault detection system is developed for induction motors, using steady state vibration signals. Early various fault detection systems using vibration signals are a trivial method and those methods are prone to have missed fault or false alarms. The suggested motor fault detection system was developed using a model-based reference value. The stationary signal had been extracted from the non-stationary signal using a data segmentation method. The signal processing method applied in this research is FFT. A reference model with spectra signal is developed and then the residuals of the vibration signal are generated. The ratio of RMS values of vibration residuals is proposed as a fault indicator for detecting faults. The developed fault detection system is tested on 800 hp motor and it is shown to be effective for detecting faults in the air-gap eccentricities and broken rotor bars. The suggested system is shown to be effective for reducing missed faults and false alarms. Moreover, the suggested system has advantages in the automation of fault detection algorithms in a random signal system, and the reference model is not complicated.
