  • This study aims to investigate the residual strength of sandwich composites with Al honeycomb core and carbon fiber face sheets after the quasi-static indentation damage by the experimental investigation. The 3-point bending test and the edge-wise compressive strength test were used to find the mechanical properties, and the quasi-static point load was applied to introduce the simulated damage on the specimen. The damaged specimens were finally assessed by the 3-point bending test and the compressive strength test. The investigation results revealed the residual strength of the damaged specimens due to the quasi-static indentation. The both test results showed that the residual strength of the damaged specimen was decreased according to increases of the damaged depth.

  • Fatigue strength of the welding structure is governed by the residual stress at the weldment toe and static tensile overloads were known as relieving the residual stresses. In this study, static tensile overloads were applied to the welding structures which caused the relief of residual stresses. The amount of residual stress relief was found as proportional to the change of fatigue limit at the given conditions. Based on the fact of the proportionality between the change of fatigue limit and that of residual stress, simple measurement technique is proposed. Modified stress-life curves base on proposed technique gave good agreement with test results.

  • The static and fatigue tensile tests have been conduted to predict the fatigue life of 8-harness satin woven and plain woven carbon/epoxy composite plates containing a circular hole. A fatigue residual strength degradation model, based on the assumption that the residual strength for unnotched specimen decreases monotonically, has been applied to predict statistically the fatigue life of materials used in this study. To determine the parameters(c, b and K) of the residual strength degradation model, the minimization technique and the maximum likelihood method are used. Agreement of the converted ultimate strength by using the minimization technique with the static ultimate strength is reasonably good. Therefore, the minimization technique is more adjustable in the determination of the parameter and the prediction of the fatigue life than the maximum likelihood method.

  • The strength and the life of welded components are affected extensively by the residual stresses distributed around their weldments not only under static loads, but also fatigue loads. The residual stress can be superimposed with externally applied loads, so that unexpected deformations and failures of members will be occurred. These residual stresses are not kept constant, but relaxed or redistributed during in service. Under static loads the relaxation takes place when the external stress superimposed with the residual stress exceeds locally the yield stress of material used. It is shown that under fatigue loads the residual stress is considerably relieved by the first or flew cycle loading, and then gradually relaxed with increasing loading cycles. In this study the phenomenon and mechanism of the stress relaxation by mechanical means were investigated and a model to predict quantitatively the residual stress relaxation for the case of static and fatigue loading condition was proposed.

  • In this study, a new empirical method is presented to obtain Dynamic Increase Factor (DIF) in nonlinear static analysis of structures against sudden removal of a gravity load-bearing element. In this method, DIF is defined as a function of minimum ratio of difference between maximum moment capacity ($M_u$) and moment demand ($M_d$) to plastic moment capacity ($M_p$) under unamplified gravity loads of elements. This function determines the residual strength of a damaged building before amplified gravity loads. For each column removal location, a nonlinear dynamic analysis and a step-by-step nonlinear static analysis are carried out and the modified empirical DIF formulas are derived, which correspond to the ratio min $[(M_u-M_d)/M_p]$ of beams in the bays immediately adjacent to the removed column, and at all floors above it. Therefore, the new DIF can be used with nonlinear static analysis instead of nonlinear dynamic analysis to assess the progressive collapse potential of a moment frame structure. The proposed DIF formulas can estimate the real residual strength of a structure based on critical member.

  • Fatigue tests have been carried out to measure the degradation of the residual strength and the fatigue life in carbon/epoxy (0/45/90/-45)$_{2s}$ composite materials. Theoretical predictions of residual strength and fatigue life were compared with experimental results. Distribution characteristics were studied using the probability of failure based on the cumulative distribution function and median rand. The static ultimate strength of carbon/epoxy composites used herein is observed to be relatively higher than that of existing similar composites ; while fatigue life is shorter due to the brittleness of matrix. The fatigue life obtained in these experiments is shorter than that estimated by residual strength degradation model when the stress level above 0.6 For the stress level of 0.6, the experimental value was abruptly increased. The cumulative distribution function for the static ultimate strength is well correlated to that for the strength converted from the measured fatigue life. Also, the predicted distribution of residual strength shows good agreement with the experimental results. Therefore, it is proven that the residual strength degradation model is reasonable.e.

  • This study reviews several fracture models for predicting the residual strength of notched composite laminates. Representative experimental results on the residual strength of composite laminates containing a notch subjected to static uniaxial tensile loading have been collected from open literature. And notched strength data for T300/5208 are analyzed. The various parameters associated with the fracture models have been determined for laminates. Notched strength data sets are compared with fracture models and the applicability of the different fracture models in predicting the notched strength of composite laminates is discussed. And static tests have been performed on 2.0mm depth notched specimen. And the test results are compared with analysis models.

  • In the concept of two-parameter fatigue failure criterion, the material fatigue failure is determined by the damage degree and the current stress level. Based on this viewpoint, a residual strength degradation model for stud shear connectors under fatigue loads is proposed in this study. First, existing residual strength degradation models and test data are summarized. Next, three series of 11 push-out specimen tests according to the standard push-out test method in Eurocode-4 are performed: the static strength test, the fatigue endurance test and the residual strength test. By introducing the "two-parameter fatigue failure criterion," a residual strength calculation model after cyclic loading is derived, considering the nonlinear fatigue damage and the current stress condition. The parameters are achieved by fitting the data from this study and some literature data. Finally, through verification using several literature reports, the results show that the model can better describe the strength degradation law of stud connectors.

  • Ductile behavior and strength of concrete-filled steel(CFS) piers was supported by many quasi-static cyclic loading tests. This test method, however, only estimates the member′s deformation capacity under escalating and repetitive displacement and ignores dynamic and random aspects of an earthquake load. Therefore, to understand complete seismic behavior of the structure against an earthquake, dynamic tests such as shaking table test and pseudo-dynamic tests are required as well as quasi-static tests. In this paper, following "Seismic Performance of Concrete-Filled Steel Piers Part I : Quasi-Static Cyclic Loadint Test", the seismic behavior of CFS and steel piers designed for I-Soo overpass in Seoul in investigated by the pseudo-dynamic test. In addition, the residual strength of both piers after an earthquake is estimated by the quasi-static test. The results show that both piers have satisfactory ductility and strength against well-known EI Centro earthquake although the CFS pier has better strength and energy dissipation than the steel pier.
