Fatigue life a box weldment was predicted with the stress concentration and residual stress using the equation reported. In order to change the stress concentration and residual stress of the box weldment, Post treatments such as smooth grinding of weld bead, weld toe grinding and hammer peening were applied. The fatigue life of the weldment after post treatment clearly increased, which is attributed to the reduction of stress concentration and/or introduction of compressive residual stress at the weld toe. The predicted fatigue life was a relatively good agreement with the experiment for a long fatigue life, while it was underestimated for a short fatigue life.
The abjective of the study is the development of the system for effective prediction of residual stresses using the backpropagation algorithm from the neural network. To achieve this goal, the series experiment were carried out and measured the residual stresses using the sectional method. Using the experimental results, the optional control algorithms using a neural network should be developed in order to reduce the effect of the external disturbances on during GMA welding processes. Then the results obtained from this study were compared between the measured and calculated results, the neural network based on backpropagation algorithm might be controlled weld quality. This system can not only help to understand the interaction between the process parameters and residual stress, but also improve the quantity control for welded structures.

When we talk with hands-free in a car or noisy lobby, the performance of the echo canceller degrade because background noise added to echo caused by the distance from mouth to microphone is relatively long. It gives a reason for necessity of noise-robust and high convergence speed adaptive algorithm. And if acoustic echo canceller operated not perfectly, residual signal going through the echo canceller to far-end speaker remains residual echo, which degrade quality of talk. To solve this problem, post-processing needed to remove residual echo ones more. In this paper, we propose a new acoustic echo canceller, which has noise robust and high convergence speed, linked with linear predictor as a post-processor. By computer simulation, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithm shows better performance from acoustic interference cancellation (AIC) viewpoint.
The fatigue life of a structure can be enhanced by improving the mechanical and metallurgical aspects to strengthen the material around regions of high stress. Coldworking of holes in structures is one of the mechanical methods of strengthening material. The material for this research is A12024-T351 which is used for the primary member or aircraft. Specimens were tested under constant amplitude loading and residual stresses measured by X-ray diffraction technique. Fatigue crack initiation life was evaluated by a strain-life equation which was considered initial residual stress and residual stress relaxation exponent as a function of the strain amplitude. The predictions on fatigue crack initiation life were compared with experimental results. A wide range of discrepancies between them was found.
The increasing amount of structures presenting distress due to reinforcement corrosion is urging the establishment of more accurate calculation methods for the service life of concrete structures. In the present paper, a summary of the different approaches is presented that are able to calculate the expected life of new structures, in certain aggressive environments or the residual life of already corroding structures. The methods for the initiation period are based on the proper calculation of the carbonation front or chloride penetration and on the steel corrosion rate. The methods for the residual load-bearing capacity calculations are based in the use of ' indicators ' or in the evaluation of the reduced section and a structural recalculation.
The strengthening of a metal matrix composite(MMC) by the shape memory effect(SME) of dispersed TiNi particles was theoretically studied. An analytical model was constructed for the prediction of the average residual stress(<$\sigma$>/sub/m) on the base of the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method. The analysis was performed on the TiNi particle/Al metal matrix composites with varying volume fractions and prestrains of the particle. The residual stress caused by the shape memory of predeformed fillers has been predicted to contribute significantly to the strengthening of this composite.
A new method of measuring residual stresses in micromachined films using beam or ring structures is proposed. Using the proposed method, more exact value of residual stress can be obtained without any ambiguities in conventional buckling method. Theoretical modeling with respect to this method is described, and experiment is performed. The structure and fabrication process in this paper are simple and widely used in surface micromachining. Therefore, it is possible to obtain a synchronous measurement. A synchronous and reason -able estimation of residual stresses in micromachined films enables us to obtain the prediction of more exact performance in micromachined devices.
An analysis using FEM simulation was conducted to predict residual stresses and birefringence in simple compressed cylindrical glass as a preliminary part of the optimum design determination of optical lenses. The FEM simulation with the Maxwell viscoelastic constitutive model was used to predict thermal induced residual stresses and birefringence during the compression test considering stress relaxation. Also the linear photoelastic theory was introduced to calculate birefringence from the residual stress state. The error of simulation results between experimental results in the birefringence value at the center of glass specimen is $4.2\%$, and the error in the maximum radius of deformed glass specimen is $1.2\%$. The simulation results were in good agreement with deformation and birefringence distribution in the existing experimental result.
Cavity expansion and contraction solutions for cylindrical and spherical cavities in unsaturated residual soils are presented in this paper. Varying soil state in the plastic zone is accounted by a numerical approach, wherein an element-by-element discretization of the plastic zone of both expanding and contracting cavities is carried out. Unlike existing methods utilizing self-similarity technique, the solution procedure enables the prediction of entire soil-state at any stage of expansion and subsequent contraction. It is also applicable for both cavity creation and expansion problems. The approach adopts constant contribution of suction to effective stress (constant Xs drainage condition) for analysis. The analysis procedure is validated by interpreting the previously reported pressuremeter test results in lateritic residual soil. The typical cavity expansion and contraction characteristics of unsaturated Indian lateritic soil were then examined using this solution procedure. The effect of initial soil-state on cavity limit pressure, plastic radius, reverse yield pressure, and reverse plastic radius are also presented.
This study compared the roundwood demand prediction accuracy of econometric and time-series models using Korean data. The roundwood was divided into softwood and hardwood by species. The econometric model of roundwood demand was specified with four explanatory variables; own price, substitute price, gross domestic product, dummy. The time-series model was specified with lagged endogenous variable. The dummy variable reflected the abrupt decrease in roundwood demand in the late 1990's in the case of softwood roundwood, and the boom of plywood export in the late 1970's in the case of hardwood roundwood. On the other hand, the prediction accuracy was estimated on the basis of Residual Mean Square Errors(RMSE). The results showed that the softwood roundwood demand prediction can be performed more accurately by econometric model than by time-series model. However, the hardwood roundwood demand prediction accuracy was similar in the case of using econometric and time-series model.
