This paper investigates the shaping operation problem introduced by Callahan et al., namely the k-fragility maximization problem (k-FMP), whose goal is to find a subset of personals within a terrorist group such that the regeneration capability of the residual group without the personals is minimized. To improve the impact of the shaping operation, the degree centrality of the residual graph needs to be maximized. In this paper, we propose a new greedy algorithm for k-FMP. We discover some interesting discrete properties and use this to design a more thorough greedy algorithm for k-FMP. Our simulation result shows that the proposed algorithm outperforms Callahan et al.'s algorithm in terms of maximizing degree centrality. While our algorithm incurs higher running time (factor of k), given that the applications of the problem is expected to allow sufficient amount of time for thorough computation and k is expected to be much smaller than the size of input graph in reality, our algorithm has a better merit in practice.
Geocasting is a form of communication that transmits messages to all nodes within a given geographical region(i.e., the geocasting region). Most of conventional onery aware protocols were based on shortest-hop routing that is, they minimized the cost in terms of the distance and total transmission energy not considering both the residual energy at each node and the link error ratio when selecting the routes for communication. In this paper we propose a MLRG(Maximum Lifetime Reliable Geocast) protocol for energy-efficient and reliable geocasting in Ad-hoc networks. The proposed MLRG, a position-based and routing-based geocasting algorithm, maximizes the network lifetime using newly defined cost function and selecting the energy balanced routes on the basis of each node's residual energy, and provides a reliable communication considering the link error ratio.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), most energy saving asynchronous MAC protocols are custom tailored for unicast communications only. However, broadcast protocols are very commonly used in WSNs for a variety of functionalities, such as gathering network topology information, event monitoring and query processing. In this paper, we propose a novel low-power asynchronous broadcast MAC protocol called Alarm Broadcast (A-CAST). A-CAST employs the strobe preamble that specifies the residual waiting time for the following data transmission. Each receiver goes back to sleep upon hearing the strobe preamble for the residual time duration, to conserve energy and to wake up just before data transmission starts. We compute the energy consumption of A-CAST via rigorous mathematical analysis. The analytic results show that A-CAST outperforms B-CAST, a simple broadcast extension of the well-known B-MAC. We also implement A-CAST on sensor motes and evaluated its performance through real experiments. Our experimental results show that A-CAST reduces the energy consumption by up to 222% compared to the previously proposed protocols.

Clustering allows hierarchical structures to be built on the nodes and enables more efficient use of scarce resources, such as frequency spectrum, bandwidth, and energy in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This paper proposes a hierarchical clustering algorithm called EEHC which is more energy efficient than existing algorithms for WSNs, It introduces region node selection as well as cluster head election based on the residual battery capacity of nodes to reduce the costs of managing sensor nodes and of the communication among them. The role of cluster heads or region nodes is rotated among nodes to achieve load balancing and extend the lifetime of every individual sensor node. To do this, EEHC clusters periodically to select cluster heads that are richer in residual energy level, compared to the other nodes, according to clustering policies from administrators. To prove the performance improvement of EEHC, the ns-2 simulator was used. The results show that it can reduce the energy and bandwidth consumption for organizing and managing WSNs comparing it with existing algorithms.

In this paper, performance analysis of full-duplex (FD) relay selection under decode-and-forward (DF) relaying mode is carried out by taking into account several critical factors, including the distributions of the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the outage probability of wireless links. The tradeoff between the FD and half-duplex (HD) modes for relay selection techniques is also analyzed, where the former suffers from the impact of residual self-interference, but the latter requires more channel resources than the former (i.e., two orthogonal channels are required). Furthermore, the impact of optimal power allocation (OPA) on the proposed relay-selection scheme is analyzed. Particularly, the exact closed-form expressions for outage probability of the proposed scheme over Rayleigh fading channels are derived, followed by validating the proposed analysis using simulation. Numerical results show that the proposed FD based scheme outperforms the HD based scheme by more than 4 dB in terms of coding gain, provided that the residual self-interference level in the FD mode can be substantially suppressed to the level that is below the noise power.
Owing to limited energy in wireless devices power saving is very critical to prolong the lifetime of the networks. In this regard, we designed a cross-layer optimization mechanism based on power control in which source node broadcasts a Route Request Packet (RREQ) containing information such as node id, image size, end to end bit error rate (BER) and residual battery energy to its neighbor nodes to initiate a multimedia session. Each intermediate node appends its remaining battery energy, link gain, node id and average noise power to the RREQ packet. Upon receiving the RREQ packets, the sink node finds node disjoint paths and calculates the optimal power vectors for each disjoint path using cross layer optimization algorithm. Sink based cross-layer maximal minimal residual energy (MMRE) algorithm finds the number of image packets that can be sent on each path and sends the Route Reply Packet (RREP) to the source on each disjoint path which contains the information such as optimal power vector, remaining battery energy vector and number of packets that can be sent on the path by the source. Simulation results indicate that considerable energy saving can be accomplished with the proposed cross layer power control algorithm.

Automatic modulation classification is a critical algorithm for non-cooperative communication systems. This paper addresses the challenging problem of closed-set and open-set signal modulation classification in complex channels. We propose a novel approach that incorporates a self-learning filter and center-loss in Deep Residual Shrinking Networks (DRSN) for closed-set modulation classification, and the Opendistance method for open-set modulation classification. Our approach achieves better performance than existing methods in both closed-set and open-set recognition. In closed-set recognition, the self-learning filter and center-loss combination improves recognition performance, with a maximum accuracy of over 92.18%. In open-set recognition, the use of a self-learning filter and center-loss provide an effective feature vector for open-set recognition, and the Opendistance method outperforms SoftMax and OpenMax in F1 scores and mean average accuracy under high openness. Overall, our proposed approach demonstrates promising results for automatic modulation classification, providing better performance in non-cooperative communication systems.

Energy constraint of wireless sensor networks makes energy saving and prolonging the network lifetime become the most important goals of routing protocols. In this paper, we propose an Energy Efficient Chain-based Routing Protocol (EECRP) for wireless sensor networks to minimize energy consumption and transmission delay. EECRP organizes sensor nodes into a set of horizontal chains and a vertical chain. Chain heads are elected based on the residual energy of nodes and distance from the header of upper level. In each horizontal chain, sensor nodes transmit their data to their own chain head based on chain routing mechanism. EECRP also adopts a chain-based data transmission mechanism for sending data packets from the chain heads to the base station. The simulation results show that EECRP outperforms LEACH, PEGASIS and ECCP in terms of network lifetime, energy consumption, number of data messages received at the base station, transmission delay and especially energy${\times}$delay metric.
In this paper, an improved zone-based routing protocol for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks is proposed. The proposed protocol has fixed the sized zone according to the distance from the base station and used a dynamic clustering technique for advanced nodes to select a cluster head with maximum residual energy to transmit the data. In addition, we select an optimal route with minimum energy consumption for normal nodes and conserve energy by state transition throughout data transmission. Simulation results indicated that the proposed protocol performed better than the other algorithm by reducing energy consumption and providing a longer network lifetime and better throughput of data packets.

In energy resource constrained networks, the network lifetime can be enhanced by optimally allocating energy resource among users based on the available channel state information and the residual energy information at each node. In this paper, we propose the relay selection scheme and power allocation scheme to maximize the network lifetime in wireless relay networks with capacity constraint. The computer simulation results show that the proposed scheme increase the network lifetime in comparison to the conventional schemes.
