피로강도 및 수명에 미치는 Shot Peening에 의한 잔류응력의 영향 (Influence of residual stress due to shot peening on fatigue strength and life)

  • Procedures are presented for influence of shot peening on fatigue strength, fatigue life and effects of shot peening are discussed from experiments were taken between shot peened and unpeened SPS5, SM45C specimens. After the residual stress on shot peened specimens was measured by X-ray diffractometer, rotating bending fatigue tests were carried out. In addition, the compressive residual stress profile was obtained by the superposition method of three stresses which is based on Al-Obaid's equation. Predicted fatigue life considering residual stress profile which was obtained by the Al-Obaid's equation and another predicted fatigue life considering residual stress profile which was measured in test were compared. For the purpose of predicting fatigue life, Morrow's equation considering the residual stress and mean stress was used.

  • The effects of re-peening on the compressive residual stress and fatigue life of Al7075-T6 were investigated. The compressive residual stress induced on the surface of components by shot peening is known to increase the fatigue life. However, the fatigue load relaxes the compressive residual stress of components. Re-peening is a technique to again induce the relaxed compressive residual stress and increase the total fatigue life of components. In this study, the re-peening process was applied to fatigue-loaded specimens. The compressive residual stress and fatigue life were examined for re-peened specimens with fatigue ratios of 30%, 50%, and 70%. The results showed that the compressive residual stress of the specimens was relaxed under the fatigue load. The re-peening process significantly increases the compressive residual stress and total fatigue life.

  • Damage often occurs on the surface of railway wheel by wheel-rail contact fatigue. It should be removed before reaching wheel failure, because wheel failure can cause derailment with loss of life and property. The increase or decrease of the contact fatigue life by the metal removal of the contact surface were shown by many researchers, but it has not explained precisely why fatigue life increases or decreases. In this study, the effect of metal removal depth on the contact fatigue life for railway wheel has been evaluated by applying finite element analysis. It has been revealed that the residual stress and the plastic flow are the main factors determining the fatigue life. The railway wheel has the initial residual stress formed during the manufacturing process, and the residual stress is changed by thermal stress induced by braking. It has been found that the initial residual stress determines the amount of metal removal depth. Also, the effects of the initial residual stress and metal removal on the contact fatigue lift has been estimated, and an equation is proposed to decide the optimal metal removal depth for maximizing the contact fatigue life.

잔류강도 저하모델의 파라미터결정법에 따른 피로수명예측 (The Prediction of Fatigue Life According to the Determination of the Parameter in Residual Strength Degradation Model)

  • The static and fatigue tensile tests have been conduted to predict the fatigue life of 8-harness satin woven and plain woven carbon/epoxy composite plates containing a circular hole. A fatigue residual strength degradation model, based on the assumption that the residual strength for unnotched specimen decreases monotonically, has been applied to predict statistically the fatigue life of materials used in this study. To determine the parameters(c, b and K) of the residual strength degradation model, the minimization technique and the maximum likelihood method are used. Agreement of the converted ultimate strength by using the minimization technique with the static ultimate strength is reasonably good. Therefore, the minimization technique is more adjustable in the determination of the parameter and the prediction of the fatigue life than the maximum likelihood method.

  • The problem of residual stresses and fatigue behavior in welded structures is the main concern of welding research fields. The residual stresses and distortions of structures by welding exert negative effect on the safety of mechanical structures. Postweld heat treatment is usually carried out to relieve this residual stresses of welded joints. In this paper the influence of postweld heat treatment on fatigue life of butt-welded joint was investigated. To predict the effect of PWHT, an analytical model is developed by finite element and local strain approach and the result of fatigue life analysis is compared to experimental results. It is demonstrated that fatigue life estimates closely approximate the experimental results and PWHT provides some increase of fatigue lives in long-life fatigue region and no increase in short-life fatigue region because of the residual stress relaxation under tensile loads.

자긴가공된 이중후육실린더의 피로수명에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Fatigue Life of Autofrettaged Compound Cylinder)

  • Thick-walled cylinder with high pressure have had wide application in the armament industry. In the thick-walled cylinder, fatigue crack is generated at inner radius and developed toward the outer radius. To prevent generation of fatigue crack, the autofrettage process had been used. The compressive residual stress induced by the autofrettage process extends loading pressure and fatigue life of the thick-walled cylinder. In this study, the residual stress of single and compound cylinder by the autofrettage process was evaluated. The analytical compressive residual stress of single cylinder was good agreement with experimental result at inner radius. The analysis on the residual stress of compound cylinder was conducted. The compressive residual stress at inner radius was increased with the overstrain level. And fatigue life of the compound cylinder with initial crack was evaluated. The considered initial crack shape was straight and semi-elliptical. The fatigue life was extended with the overstrain level. The fatigue life of the compound cylinder with semi-elliptical crack was longer than straight crack. The suitable way to extend fatigue life of the compound cylinder was proposed.

  • Recently the steel parts used for automiles and trains are required to be used under higher stress than ever before in need of the weight down. However, threr are a lot of problems with developing such of fatigue strength and fatigue life are mainly focused on by adopting residual stress. And got the following characteristics from crack growth test carried out stress ratio. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the Un-peening material. And Compressive residual stress of surface on the Shot-peening processed operate resistance force of fatigue. So we cam obtain fallowings. (1) The fatigue crack growth rate on stage II is conspicuous with the size of compressive residual stress and is dependent of Paris equation. (2) Although the maximum compressive residual stress is deeply and widely formed from surface, fatigue life does not improve than when maximum compressive residual stress is formed in surface. (3) The threshold stress intensity factor range is increased with increasing compressive residual stress.

  • According to our fatigue tests carried out at 20 Hz, R=0.1 on transversely butt-welded joints, fatigue strengths of as-welded specimens, that is, specimens having residual stress are higher than those of annealed specimens in short life range, but vice verse in long life range. This behavior seems to be concerned mainly with residual stress relaxation by applied loading. After analyzing the welding process, we conducted finite element analysis to quantify the degree of residual stress relaxation. By taking into account residual stress relaxation, modified Goodman diagram, and nominal stress, we evaluated the fatigue life of the welded joint from the S-N curve for the parent material. The estimated results are in a good agreement with the experimental results.

A fuzzy residual strength based fatigue life prediction method

  • The fatigue damage problems are frequently encountered in the design of civil engineering structures. A realistic and accurate fatigue life prediction is quite essential to ensure the safety of engineering design. However, constructing a reliable fatigue life prediction model can be quite challenging. The use of traditional deterministic approach in predicting the fatigue life is sometimes too dangerous in the real practical designs as the method itself contains a wide range of uncertain factors. In this paper, a new fatigue life prediction method is going to be proposed where the residual strength is been utilized. Several cumulative damage models, capable of predicting the fatigue life of a structural element, are considered. Based on Miner's rule, a randomized approach is developed from a deterministic equation. The residual strength is used in a one to one transformation methodology which is used for the derivation of the fatigue life. To arrive at more robust results, fuzzy sets are introduced to model the parameter uncertainties. This leads to a convoluted fuzzy based fatigue life prediction model. The developed model is illustrated in an example analysis. The calculated results are compared with real experimental data. The applicability of this approach for a required reliability level is also discussed.
