After imposing a large pre-strain, anisotropy increases with increasing residual extension ratio. Gums have very low residual extension ratio and exhibit little anisotropy, while black filled SBR and especially sulfur-cured carbon black filled NR have large set and anisotropy. For carbon black filled rubber, samples subjected to tensile loading in perpendicular to the pre-strain direction have the same stress-strain curves shape as the sample without pre-strain (=isotropic samples), but slightly lower modulus. However, compared to isotropic or perpendicular directional samples to pre-strain direction, samples subjected to tensile loading in parallel to the pre-strain direction show low stress at low deformation, but have high stiffness at high deformation. Normalized anisotropy changes with strain. The normalized anisotropy for various deformations is a linear function of residual extension ratio.
Utilization of fiber beam-column element has gained considerable attention in recent years due mainly to its ability to model distributed plasticity over the length of the element through a number of integration points. However, the relatively high sensitivity of the method to modeling parameters as well as material behavior models can pose a significant challenge. Residual drift is one of the seismic demands which is highly sensitive to modeling parameters and material behavior models. Permanent deformations play a prominent role in the post-earthquake evaluation of serviceability of bridges affected by a near-fault ground shaking. In this research, the influence of distributed plasticity modeling parameters using both force-based and displacement-based fiber elements in the prediction of internal forces obtained from the nonlinear static analysis is studied. Having chosen suitable type and size of elements and number of integration points, the authors take the next step by investigating the influence of material behavioral model employed for the prediction of permanent deformations in the nonlinear dynamic analysis. The result shows that the choice of element type and size, number of integration points, modification of cyclic concrete behavior model and reloading strain of concrete significantly influence the fidelity of fiber element method for the prediction of permanent deformations.
The first part of this study found the tendencies of the mechanical properties of two arctic structural steels (EH32 and FH32). In the second part, the crashworthiness of stiffened panels scaled down from the side frame structure of a Korean research icebreaker was determined. A procedure for designing the shapes and sizes of the stiffened panels, mass and shape of a drop striker, and a large temperature chamber, and then manufacturing these, is introduced in detail. From impact bending tests for the stiffened panels, the residual permanent deformations and deformation histories over time were captured using manual measurement and video image analyses. Numerical simulations of the impact bending tests were carried out for three different finite element models, which were mainly composed of shell elements, solid elements, and solid elements, with welding beads. It was proven from a comparison of the test results and numerical simulation results that the solid element model with the welding bead consideration approached the test results in terms of the residual deformations as long as the strain rate effect was taken into account.
Residual stress induced in U-bending and tube-to-tubesheet joint processes of PWR's row-1 heat exchanger tube was measured by X-ray method and Hole-Drilling Method(HDM). Compressive residual stresses(-) at the extrados surface were induced in U-bending, and its maximum value reached -319 MPa in axial direction at the position of $\psi$ = $0^{\circ}$. Tensile residual stresses(+) of $\sigma_{zz}$ = 45 MPa and $\sigma_{\theta\theta}$ = 25 MPa were introduced in the intrados surface at the position of $\psi$ = $0^{\circ}$. Maximum tensile residual stress of 170 MPa was measured at the flank side at the position of $\psi$ = $90^{\circ}$, i.e., at apex region. It was observed that higher stress gradient was generated at the irregular transition regions (ITR). The trend of residual stress induced by U bending process of the tubes was found to be related with the change of ovality. The residual stress induced by the explosive joint method was found to be lower than that by the mechanical roll method. The gradient of residual stress along the expanded tube was highest at the transition region (TR), and the residual stress in circumferential direction was found to be higher than the residual stress in axial direction.
Within the framework of anisotropic combined viscoplastic hardening formulation, accounting macroscopically for residual stress as well as texture development at finite deformations of metals, simple shear analyses for the simulation of fixed-end torsion experiments for ${\alpha}$-Fe, Al and Cu at different strain rates are reviewed with an emphasis on the role of constitutive spins. Complicated responses of the axial stresses with monotonically increasing shear deformations can be successfully described by the capacity of orthotropic hardening part, featuring tensile axial stresses either smooth or oscillatory. Temperature effect on the responses of axial stresses for Cu is investigated in relation to the distortion and orientation of yield surface. The flexibility of this combined hardening model in the simulation of finite inelastic strains is discussed with reference to the variations of constitutive spins depending upon strain rates and temperatures.
In this paper, a multilaminate based model have been developed and presented to predict the strain hardening behavior of rock. In this multilaminate model, the stress-strain behavior of a material is obtained by integrating the mechanical response of an infinite number of predefined oriented planes passing through a material point. Essential features such as the variable deformations hypothesis and multilaminate model are discussed. The methodology to be discussed here is modeling of strains on the 13 laminates passing through a point in each loading step. Upon the presented methodology, more attention has been given to hardening in non-linear behaviour of rock in going from the peak to residual strengths. The predictions of the derived stress-strain model are compared to experimental results for marble, sandstone and dense Cambria sand. The comparisons demonstrate the ability of this model to reproduce accurately the mechanical behavior of rocks.
Precision injection molding process is of great importance since precision optical products such as CD, DVD and various lens are manufactured by those process. In such products, birefringence affects the optical performance while residual stress that determines the geometric precision level. Therefore, it is needed to study residual stress and birefringence that affect deformation and optical quality, respectively in precision optical product. In the present study, we tried to predict residual stress, final shrinkage and birefringence in injection molded parts in a systematic way, and compared numerical results with the corresponding experimental data. Residual stress and birefringence can be divided into two parts, namely flow induced and thermally induced portions. Flow induced birefringence is dominant during the flow, whereas thermally induced stress is much higher than flow induced one when amorphous polymer undergoes rapid cooling across the glass transition region. A numerical system that is able to predict birefringence, residual stress and final shrinkage in injection molding process has been developed using hybrid finite element-difference method for a general three dimensional thin part geometry. The present modeling attempts to integrate the analysis of the entire process consistently by assuming polymeric materials as nonlinear viscoelastic fluids above a no-flow temperature and as linear viscoelastic solids below the no-flow temperature, while calculating residual stress, shrinkage and birefringence accordingly. Thus, for flow induced ones, the Leonov model and stress-optical law are adopted, while the linear viscoelastic model, photoviscoelastic model and free volume theory taking into account the density relaxation phenomena are employed to predict thermally induced ones. Special cares are taken of the modeling of the lateral boundary condition which can consider product geometry, histories of pressure and residual stress. Deformations at and after ejection have been considered using thin shell viscoelastic finite element method. There were good correspondences between numerical results and experimental data if final shrinkage, residual stress and birefringence were compared.
Welding is one of the most important joining processes and the effect of welding residual stresses in the structure has a great deal of influence on its quality. In this paper, recent development in computational welding mechanics, particularly calculation of welding residual stresses, is introduced. The hypoelastic formulation of finite element analysis for thermoelastic-plastic deformation is applied to welding processes to find residual deformations and stresses. Leblond's phase evolution equation coupled with the energy equation is employed to calculate the phase volume fraction; this plays an important role as a kinetics parameter affecting phase fraction effects in the mechanical constitutive equation of welded materials. Furthermore, transformation plasticity is taken into account for an accurate evaluation of stress. The influence of the phase transformation and the transformation plasticity on residual stress is investigated by means of numerical analyses using metallurgical parameters in Leblond's phase evolution equation that are adjusted with respect to various cooling rates in a CCT-diagram. Coding implementation is conducted by way of the ABAQUS user subroutines, UMAT.
Earthquake motion is one of the most significant influence factors on the slope stability. In this paper, an effective stress analysis with the elasto-plastic model was carried out to investigate the behavior of the slope stability subjected to the successive two strong earthquake motions, fore and main shock. The major influence of fore shock to the slope stability was considered as the existence of the residual excess pore water pressure. The paper presents the influence of the existence of the fore shock to slope stability using the numerical analyses. In conclusion, the excess pore pressure by the fore shock was not dissipated during the 7hrs of consolidation. By this residual excess pore water pressure, the factor of safety at the sliding face showed the minimum values, and the deformations of slope was large when compared with the case that considered the main shock only. Furthermore, the minimum of the factor of safety came out after the end of the earthquake motion.
