  • This study was undertaken to measure the diffusibility and antimicrobial effectiveness of the medication used in clinical practice. To study the diffusibility of the root canal medicament, loss of formocresol and camphorated phenol from a cotton pellet after insertion into the pulp chamber of 260 molars prepared as routine endodontic treatment was measured. Measurement was done for the one time insertions and for the reinsertions using ultraviolet spectrophotometer. Antibacterial effectiveness against three microoganisms, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and a-hemolytic streptococcus, on the blood agar plate was observed by measurement of the inhibition zone with. various amount of medicaments. The following results were observed. 1. Nearly all of the medication were lost in the first day after insertion and the residual amount of camphorated phenol was greater than that of formocresol. 2. Residual amounts of medication in the reinsertion group were greater than that of the one time insertion group. 3. Within the pulp chamber diffusibility of formocresol was greater than that of camphorated phenol. 4. The amount of formocresol diffusing out from the tooth was greater than that of camphorated phenol. 5. Antibacterial effectiveness was observed from the residual amount of formocresol in the reinsertion group and in other groups no antibacterial effectiveness was observed.

  • This paper deals with residual stress characteristics of ion-nitrided metal which is primarilly concerned with the effects of added carbon content in gas atmosphere. A small optimal amount of carbon content in gas atmosphere increase compound layer thickness, as well as to increase diffusion layer thickness and hardness. The residual stress and deflection of the specimens was measured in various elevated temperature at the surface of ion-nitrided metal and the internal stress distribution was calculated. It is found that compressive residual stress at the compound layer is largest at the compound layer, and decreases as the depth from the surface increases.

  • This paper deals with the residual stress of carburized spur gears is calculated being on the assumption that the main cause of residual stress is the volume difference between case and core due to the martensitic transformation in cooling. A formula is proposed to estimated the residual stress from the hardness and the amount of retained austenite. The estimated residual stress is close to the stress measured by X-ray method. The estimated residual stress is applied to the analysis of the fracture mechanics of carburized spur gear teeth. The stress intensity factor due to the residual stress is demonstrated. The stress intensity factor is computed by the influence function method, and it is shown that the factor is decreased by the residual stress in Carburized gear tooth.

  • This study aimed at he experimental and finite element analytic investigation of the effect of preheating on he residual stress of weldment. In this study, an autogenous arc welding was used on type 304 stainless steel and MARC as F.E.M. common code was utilized in analysis The analyses include transient and moving heat source and thermal properties as function of temperature. During welding, the thermal cycles of four locations in the weldment were recorded to investigate of the behavior of thermal stress and residual stress. The experimental and analytic results had good coincidence and show that there are two factors influencing the formation of welding residual stress in preheat process. One is the elevation of welding equilibrium temperature and the other is the increase of amount of heat input. The former decrease welding residual stress and the latter increase welding residual stress. Therefore, the cumulative effects result in the welding residual stress not being improved significantly with preheating in 304 stainless steel.

  • Evaluation of fracture toughness of welded structures has a significant influence on the structural design. However the residual stresses is redistributed while the welded structures is cut for preparing specimens. This study investigated an effect of the welding residual stress redistribution on the impact absorption energy of Charpy specimen. SA516Gr70 steel plate by at the flux cored arc welding (FCAW) and gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW) was cutting. Specimens for Charpy impact testing were taken from the welded plate. Two material removal mechanisms (wire cutting and water jet) were used to make the specimens. Welding residual stress and redistribution residual stress were measured using the XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) method. The amount of redistribution of residual stress depends on the different material removal mechanism. Redistribution of residual stress of reduced the impact absorption energy by 15%.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to describe bladder dysfunction in elderly women such as frequency, nocturia, and residual urine. Methods: One hundred elderly women aged 60 and over. The Bristol Female Lower Urinary Symptoms (BFLUT) was used to evaluate the bladder function and to measure the residual urine amount by using a bladder scanner. Data was analyzed with the differences between voiding dysfunction by age group and life habits by t-test, ANOVA and correlation by Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: the mean daytime frequency was 6.8 times and night-time frequency 2.7 times. Sixty three percent of subjects had urgency and 41% had urgent incontinence. Over half of subjects had problem in voiding function. There were significant differences in frequency by age groups and constipation, but not in daytime frequency and residual urine. Lastly, there were significant positive relations between daytime frequency and night-time frequency. Also results indicate that more frequency in daytime equaled to a less residual urine amount. Conclusion: We know many elderly women have lower urinary tract symptoms. Specially women over 75 years have more daytime frequency and night-time frequency. This suggests further research needed in order to understand the relation of voiding patterns and life habits and its influence on quality of life.

  • Hydrogen assisted cracking (HAC) is one of the most complicated problem in welding. Huge amount of studies have been done for decades. Based on them, various standards have been established to avoid HAC. But it is still a chronic problem in industrial field. It is well known that the main causes of the hydrogen crack are residual stress, crack susceptible micro structures and a certain critical level of hydrogen concentration. Even though the exact generating mechanism is unclear till today, it has been reported that the hydrogen level in the weld metal should be managed less than a certain amount to prevent it. Matsuda studied that the residual hydrogen level in the weld metal can be varied even if the initial hydrogen content is same. It is also insisted in this report that the residual hydrogen concentration is in stronger correlation with hydrogen crack than the initial hydrogen content. But, in practical point of view, the residual hydrogen is still hard to consider because measuring hydrogen level is time and cost consuming process. In this regard, numerical analysis is the only solution for considering the residual hydrogen content. Meanwhile, Takahashi showed the possibility of predicting the residual hydrogen by a rigorous FE analysis. But, few commercial software suitable for solving the weld metal hydrogen has been reported yet. In this study, two dimensional thermal - hydrogen coupled analysis was developed by using the commercial FE software MARC. Since the governing equation of the hydrogen diffusion is similar to the heat transfer, it is shown that the heat transfer FE analysis in association with hydrogen diffusion property can be used for hydrogen diffusion analysis. A series of simulation was performed to verify the accuracy of the model. For BOP (Bead-On-Plate) and the multi-pass butt welding simulations, remaining hydrogen contents in the weld metal is well matched with measurements which are referred from Kim and Masamitsu.

  • For the assessment of the retardation of fatigue crack propagation behavior due to overload, new FE analysis algorithms considering compressive residual stress redistribution near crack tip was proposed in this paper. The size of plastic zone near crack tip was obtained by elasto-plastic analysis and it was compared with Irwin's equation. The amount of residual stress redistribution was assessed by subsequent elasto-plastic analysis, and the difference of residual stress distributions between constant amplitude load and overload was obtained. In the analysis of fatigue crack propagation, the applied SIF range was evaluated by ASTM E647, and the effect of residual stresses on crack propagation was considered using the effective SIF concept. The test results of crack propagations were compared with the predicted data obtained by the analysis.

  • In this paper the residual stresses on lubricated sliding surfaces were measured during break-in procedure and up to scuffing by the X-ray diffraction method. The cylinder-on-disk type tribometer was used with the line-contact geometry. Scuffing tests were done using a constant load. In the break-in procedure the loads were increased from very low values in several steps. It was found that the sliding surfaces with break-in represented relatively higher values of residual compressive stresses than those without break-in. The residual stresses below the surfaces showed the small amount of stress increases. The results of scuffing tests with and without break-in showed the same trends as break-in tests did. However, in case of tests with break-in procedure the stresses below the surfaces showed very large increases in the residual compressive stresses. From the tests of break-in and scuffing, it was found that the increases in scuffing lives were related with the increases of residual stresses on the lubricated sliding surfaces with break-in.
