The purpose of this study was to provide basic information regarding the planning of lounge and hallway areas for skilled nursing facilities for the elderly, given that residents spend much of their time in these areas. This study examined Korean elderly residents' occupancy and behavior in lounges and hallways in order to analyze how plan type, spatial composition, and equipment affect residents. To do this, observations were conducted in five facilities that were provided to the elderly at no charge. Results indicate that a central garden offers a wide hallway area that can be used not only for strolling but also for list of activities; at the same time, it can reduce the overall rate of inactivity. A shorter distance between the lounge and hallway on the opposite side is likely to help better disperse residents' throughout the facility. Hallway corners have potential for activities that may require sofas, tables, or equipment for individual activities; they could also be used for planned interaction programs or unplanned collaboration on the part of small groups of residents.

The demand for one-room system house as a new type of house will increase gradually, and residents also tend to be diversified. However, a method of planning of planning of one-room system house was limited and unified. Current floor plans of the one-room don't utilize a benefit of open plan in small areas. The purpose of this study is to propose several guidelines for the planning of one-room system houses that correspond to residents' needs in order to facilitate the benefit of open plan such as efficiency and multi-purpose use in small area. For this, a field survey was carried out as case studies, with individual interviews, questionnaires, and actual survey including taking pictures. Subjects were 50 residents who living in one-room system houses in Busan. Space usage behavior of residents, residential satisfactions, and preference attitudes on the attached service facilities were analyzed. Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare health promotion behavior in middle-aged rural residents by cancer screening participation. Methods: Data were collected from 508 rural residents during the period from April 6 to June 6, 2009 using structured questionnaires, and analyzed using SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: The cancer screening rate was 50.2%. The rate was significantly different according to sex, educational level, marital status, private insurance, family cancer history, smoking, drinking, perceived health status, and health concern. Men showed the highest screening rate in gastroscopy for stomach cancer, and women in pap smear test for cervical cancer. Pap smear test for cervical cancer showed the highest regular screening rate (4.3%). The average score of health promotion behavior was $2.65{\pm}0.35$. Health promotion behavior was significantly different according to cancer screening participation, health responsibility, stress management, and self actualization. Conclusions: These results suggested that there may be differences in health promotion behavior among middle-aged rural residents according to their cancer screening participation. A further study is necessary to find effective interventions for the non-cancer screening group.
This study was conducted for the purpose of analyzing volunteer workers' perceptions of and attitudes toward the behavior problems of the elderly residents after caring for the residents voluntarily at low-income nursing homes. Eleven male and female volunteers ranging from age 19 to 52 were asked how they felt about the elderly residents' behavior problems and what kind of behavioral problems they had experienced after doing volunteer works in the three chosen facilities. In particular, they were expected to explain what emotional changes they experienced during their volunteer service. In this study, it was observed that most of the elderly subjects experienced three categories of behavior problems: habitual, repetitious and unreasonable activities caused by the elderly residents' life span backgrounds, unexpected and/or abrupt behaviors resulting from gradual cognitive impairments, and physiological, awkward activities caused from gradual senility. The volunteers tend to believe that the elderly residents are naturally expected to act positively, since they have been provided with well- planned, regular care services such as bathing, counseling, activity programs, and religious guidances. On the other hand, some respondents stated that their experiences at the nursing homes caused them to form negative images of the elderly; they feel that the elderly are not helpful for giving advices on critical decisions, guiding and encouraging their daily lives, and offering any positive influences toward their own lives. Rather, they find themselves getting too much stressed as a result of their intimate contacts with demented or senile residents. Overall, in this study, it is proposed that education for confronting sudden abrupt behavior problems should be intensified more for female volunteers, since they tend to be more susceptible to emotional harassment resulting from the problem behaviors. It is also proposed that young volunteers who have not been systematically trained for confronting aggressive behaviors need to be separately assigned their roles in order to minimize the potential of confronting unseemly situations resulting from male residents whose mental health has deteriorated. Furthermore, it is also suggested that the combination of leisure-related activities for healthy residents and stressful intimate services for the frail residents be systematically planned and implanted for the volunteer program so that the volunteers can lessen the chances of suddenly finding themselves confronted with extremely abrupt agitations.
This study investigates the design features of pilotis applied to 20 high-rise apartment housings in Korea, completed between January 2000 and August 2005. It analyzes the design characteristics of pilotis on the basis of its spatial configuration and the residents' behavior and suggests the directions of pilotis design in the future. The study finds the followings. 1) The pilotis spaces in foreign apartment housings are used mainly for communal functions such as the passages between buildings for both pedestrians and vehicles. Compared with this public use of pilotis in foreign counterparts, the pilotis spaces in Korean apartment housings are semi-private and have multiple purposes. 2) The pilotis design can be classified on the basis of the spatial configuration elements and the patterns of residents' behavior. The spatial configuration elements consist of ceiling, column, wall, and floor; the residents' behavior can be classified as viewing, resting and playing, driving and parking, and keeping privately-owned objects such as motorcycle and bicycle. 3) Two spatial configuration elements, the wall and the ceiling and two behavioral patterns, 'resting and playing' and 'viewing' are getting more attention by designers in the apartment housings analyzed in this study.
This study aims to deeply analyze the information consumption behavior structure of rural residents in Changchun, China. and further improve the information consumption level of rural residents. Questionnaire survey and statistical analysis were used in this study. First, Through in-depth interview and open questionnaire collection and compilation of measurement questions. Secondly, residents in 15 rural areas around Changchun were selected for the survey, Finally, SPSS23.0 was used for exploratory factor analysis of recovered data, and Mplus7.4 was used for confirmatory factor analysis. The results show that the structure of information consumption behavior of rural residents in Changchun includes three dimensions of information demand, information literacy and payment ability, which is corresponding to the previous studies on information consumption behavior structure's demand power, purchasing power and information quality. This study has certain empirical validity.
This research paper explores selected behavioral outcomes of a multi-sensory environment. An experimental study was conducted at a specialized facility for the ageing in Sweden. The objective was to explore the effects of agitated behaviors of ageing residents with dementia and to identify any short-term effects. Appointed nursing staff was instructed to record physically and verbally agitated behaviors on three occasions; pre-session, mid-session, and post-session. Over seven months, nine participants received sixty-one sessions in the multi-sensory room. ANOVA and Post hoc multiple comparisons were performed to identify the differences in mean between each session. Generally irritated/frustrated behavior and eating/drinking non foods revealed statistically significant differences, while there were no significant results in verbally agitated behavior. One short-term effect was observed in one agitated category; a reduction of generally irritated/frustrated behavior. These results suggest that the multi-sensory environment can have positive effects on some manifestations of agitated behavior. This study proposes that a multi-sensory environment may be recommended as an alternative intervention for physically agitated behavior among this category of residents. However, more research is needed to understand the specific effects and the best use of the multi-sensory environment for this population.
