  • This paper examines a spatial pattern and processes of academic achievement in deprived area, considering relationship between academic achievement and social deprivation as social context. It links academic achievement data with neighborhood data from the 2001 UK Census(by ward) in South East England and uses multiple regression modeling to estimate the contribution of social deprivation to academic achievement of primary schools. The findings suggest that there is a significant positive relationship between deprivation in the local residential environment and academic achievement in primary schools. It also argues that more deprived area in South East England would tend to promote greater inequality of academic achievement in the spatial aspects, relating to Key Stage 2 score.

  • The value of the Tosi-Hanok have recently been appreciated and accordingly the resultant studies have actively been conducted. This is an attempt to probe our architectural type haying identity through our traditional architecture in Korean society that pursues only something new. But owing to the infusion of foreign cultures and modernization, the archetype of Korean-style house has either been damaged or indiscriminately transformed without the establishment of its proper norms. The understanding of the value of traditional cultures has gradually increased, and accordingly effort to preserve Korean-style houses through legal regulations or systems have continually been made in terms of appearance or cityscape. For this reason, it is thought that it Is insufficient to present the direction or alternative to preservation in relation to the change or use of the interior space with the pattern of requirement for other programs other than dwelling. Therefore, this study attempted to find out the original meaning of Korean-style house by highlighting the advantages of Tosi-Hanok and supplementing its disadvantage while accommodating the diverse requirement for programs as contemporary residential space. And it was intended to propose the model for Tosi-Hanok that accommodates social changes in content while maintaining its meaning by analyzing the Tosi-Hanok with a focus on interior space and preserving historical continuity on its basis.

  • As the needs of housing for the elderly has increased, many researches have been carried out and some housing projects for the elderly including nursing home began to be provided. Most researches have focused on the development of housing type or space layout and only several ones on interior design. The interior design in house influences physically or psychologically on the elderly who lives in. Also, the subject of them which examined the needs or preference for housing for the elderly were the middle-aged, not the aged. The purpose of the study was to examine the preferred characteristics of interior design in residential space by the elderly. The structured interview with 120 old persons who lived in Busan was carried out using by a questionnaire and 3D images. The elderly answered about the preferred interior style, color, lighting and interior finishes of each room in house, such as living room, master bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. On the basis of the findings, the characteristics of interior design of each room in house which the elderly preferred were presented. In general, they preferred the mixed interior style with tradition and modem. Also, the reddish and purple interior color, flower or plant patterned wall finishes, and wood floor were preferred in living room and master bedroom by the elderly. The white interior color and one colored wall finishes without any pattern were preferred in kitchen and bathroom.

  • Fuel cell systems(FCS) have a financial and environmental advantage by providing electricity at a high efficiency and useful heat. For use in a residence, a polymer electrolyte fuel cell system(PEFCS) with a battery pack and a hot water storage tank has been modelled and simulated. The system is operated without connection to grid line. Its electric conversion efficiency and heat recovery performance are highly dependent on operation strategies and also on the seasonal thermal and electric load pattern. The output of the fuel cell is controlled stepwise as a function of the state of the battery and/or the storage water tank. In this study various operation strategies for cogeneration fuel cell systems are investigated. Average fuel saving rates at different seasons are calculated to find proper load management strategy. The scheme can be used to determine the optimal operating strategies of PEFCS for residential and building applications.

  • In veiw of the results that the spatial peculiarity of the residential environment has been analyzed through the investigation of live on the change and use of the space of housing in the village of Bongsung, which is a traditional farming village of Cheju Island, and in the village of Hamo, which is a traditional fishing village of Cheju Island, a traditional constitution of space strongly remains in the village of Bongsungwhose family composition has been reductionized and implified, on the other side a tendency of extension or remodelling has been strongly appeared as well as a plot planning or a loose form has been appeared in the village of Hamo whose famiIy composition has been simplified and diversified and whose style of living has been also diversified, so the tianditional style which the yard has been surrounded with a stone wall has not remained. In the generation of 1970, a tendency to maintain the tranditional living style, to simply change for application, or to change for holding fast to the tradition was appeared, and the space of housing has been changed for the advanced modernization of life pattern since the generation of 1980. However, the traditional custom of life is continued.

  • Eight trace metals, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, were measured in the urban soil of Guwahati City, Assam, India from 31 sites representing five different types of land use, residential, commercial, industrial, public utilities, and roadside. Cd and Co occurred in very low concentrations (Cd << Co) in all types of land use without any significant variation from one type of land use to another. Ni concentrations were more than those of Co, and the concentrations depended on land use pattern. Average Cr and Cu concentrations were ${\geq}100mg/kg$, but Cr had a significantly higher presence in industrial land use. Pb concentrations showed similar trends. The two metals, Mn and Zn, were present in much larger amounts compared to the others with values ${\geq}300mg/kg$. Industrial and roadside soil contained much more Mn while commercial soil was enriched with Zn. Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) was used for elucidating the mobility characteristics of the eight heavy metals. Mn suffered the highest leaching from commercial land (9.9 mg/kg on average) and also from other types of land. Co, Cu and Pb showed higher leachability from commercial soils but the leached concentrations were less than those of Mn. The two metals, Zn and Ni, were leached from residential land in considerable amounts. The TCLP showed Mn to be the most leachable metal and Cr the least.

  • The Ubiquitous life is not a life style that exists in a science fiction or in a far distance future anymore. The Combination of electronic and physical space, this new type of space was created by the ubiquitous network system, and this system will offer us new life style. Also the pattern of our living will be changed by the information that has obtained from this ubiquitous network system. By offering a new way of communication from the ubiquitous surrounding, our life style such as shopping, medical treatment, banking, and working conditions and a notion such as the preference in a job title would have shifted. This study have arrived at the development of the high technology, in other words Ubiquitous age , I have considered the notion of home-network that have observed by the preceding investigators as well as the theoretical consideration of residential space in ubiquitous surrounding. After I look into the usages and examples of residential space in ubiquitous surrounding of today's society, I hope that this would be helpful for the design that strives for the comfortable living in this ubiquitous age.

  • The energy intensity of Nepal is economically not worthy, lacks eco-friendly and importantly not sustainable, and almost four times the average global energy intensity. Considerable efforts have been exercised to reduce the energy gap yet, it is still much to achieve. Nation priority on energy sector was envisaged with promulgation of investment friendly rules and law in hydropower and renewable technology even though, could not harness the sufficient energy. In amid of this acute energy crisis, the government launched the Nepal Energy Efficiency Programme (NEEP) with technical assistance from German International Cooperation (GIZ). Energy Efficiency (EE) practice is the most cost-effective method to reduce the supply and demand gap, reduce on greenhouse gases and pollution, and deter on import of petroleum products which finally improves on trade imbalance. This paper had proposed a framework of energy management team to promote energy efficient technologies in residential consumer. The energy management teams study the past records of energy use pattern of consumers and suggest appropriate technology for energy saving options. The paper provides some reviews of energy efficiency initiatives undertaken by the concern regulatory body which highlights the current status. The comprehensive knowledge acquired through exploratory research is implemented in this paper to identify the various barriers that domestic consumer is experiencing towards the active participation in energy efficiency program launched by the Government of Nepal.
