Effects of collision angle on heat transfer characteristics of a liquid droplet impinging on a heated wall above the Leidenfrost point temperature were experimentally investigated. The heated wall and droplet temperatures were $506^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the impact angle varied from $20^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ while the normal collision velocity was constant at 0.27 m/s. The droplet collision behaviors and the surface temperature distribution were measured using synchronized high-speed video and infrared cameras. The major physical parameters influencing upon droplet-wall collision heat transfer, such as residence time, wall heat flux, effective heat transfer area, heat transfer amount, were analyzed. It was found at the constant normal collision velocity that the residence time, wall heat flux and effective heat transfer area were hardly not changed, resulting in the almost constant heat transfer amount.
In this paper, a segregated finite element program for the analysis of an axisymmetric steady flow has been developed in order to investigate the flow inside an annular pipe with a periodic obstacle. For the verification of the developed code, a developing pipe flow has been solved and the solution is in a good agreement with the existing results. For the analysis of the flow inside an annular pipe with a periodic obstacle, three types of periodic obstacle are considered. From the present numerical analysis, various physical variables including flow pattern, pressure distribution and residence time are investigated as a preliminary study to the heat transfer analysis of an annular pipe flow with a periodic obstacle.
Experimental measurements of flame structure and soot characteristics were performed for ethene inverse diffusion flames (IDF). IDF has been considered as the excellent flow field to study the incipient soot because soot particle do not experience the oxidation process. In this study, LIF image clarified the reaction zone of IDF with OH signal and PAH distribution. laser light scattering technique also identified the being of soot particle. To address the degree of soot maturing, C/H ratio and morphology of soot sample were investigated. From these measurements, the effect of flow residence time and temperature on soot inception could be suggested, and more details on soot characteristic in the IDF was determined according to fuel dilution and flame condition. The fuel dilution results in a decrease of temperature and enhancement of residence time, but the critical dilution mole fraction is existed for temperature not to effect on soot growth. Also, the soot inception evolved on the specific temperature and its morphology are independent of the fuel dilution ratio of fuel.
Soot particles of diesel and bunker-A with different sulfur contents were generated by pyrolysis with varying conditions of fuel flow rate and residence time in the ceramic tube at $1300^{\circ}C$. TEM and particle size analyzer were used for analysing the primary and the secondary particle size distributions. The results showed that the sulfur content in fuel influences soot inception while the fuel concentration and residence time affects the growth of incepted soot particles.
Condensing species behaviour downstream of a combustor was discussed with particle size distribution in this study. The effects of operating conditions in a biomass combustion facility, i.e. concentration of condensing species, temperature gradient, residence time and injection of adsorbents, on particle size distribution were investigated. Pyroligneous liquid which was completely vaporized at the temperature higher than $350^{\circ}C$ was used as a representative of condensing gaseous species. We found that particle size downstream of a combustor increased with increasing heating temperature (i.e. concentration of condensing species) and residence time. However, temperature gradient was not an important factor to control the particle size. The addition of $SiO_2$ precursor as an adsorbent could effectively prevent the particle formation by adsorbing condensing gaseous species on $SiO_2$ particles, and increased the particle size up to 300 nm, resulting in increasing particle removal efficiency in a conventional air pollution control device.

This paper presents a residence time distribution (RTD) measurement method using a radioisotope tracer and the estimation method of RTD model parameters to analyze a submerged bio-reactor. The mathematical RTD models have been investigated to represent the flow behavior and the existence of stagnant regions in the reactor. Knowing the parameters of the RTD model is important for understanding the mixing characteristics of a reactor The radioisotope tracer experiment was carried out by injecting a radioisotope tracer as a pulse into the inlet of the reactor and recording the change of its concentration at the outlet of the reactor to obtain the experimental RTD response. The parameter estimation was performed by the Levenberg-Marquardt optimization algorithm. The proposed scheme allowed the parameter estimation of RTD model suggested by Adler-Hovorka with very low deviations. The estimation procedure is shown to lead to accurate estimation of the RTD parameters and to a good agreement between experimental and simulated response.
The aim of this study is to improve the purification efficiency of odor gas by increasing the contact area between an odor gas and adsorbent. To analyze the flow in the adsorption tower, the flow characteristics in the hollow activated carbon-adsorption tower are identified by applying the loss model, which is a porous flow analysis model. The flow characteristics are investigated for pressure loss, velocity distribution, turbulent kinetic energy, and residence time distribution. The results show that the hollow adsorption tower performs better than the solid adsorption tower in terms of pressure loss and performance. The inner diameter of the hollow region inside the adsorption tower is 0.64 m (Di/Do = 0.37). Furthermore, the adsorbent performance is unaffected even when adsorbent stages are installed to replace the adsorbent.
Health effects caused by the ultrafine particles in ambient air are great concern to the public health, and the strict measuring and monitoring of the ambient aerosol are required. In this work, the characteristics of the aerosol size distribution in Pohang province are studied. Optical particle counters (Grimm APS 1108 and 1109) were used to measure the aerosol size distribution in the area. Locations near the national monitoring site located in the industrial and the residence area were selected for the measuring sites of this study, and the locations in border area between the industry and the residence were selected for the reference of the comparison. In the industry site, it is found that the concentration of aerosol particles near the size of 5 ${\mu}m$ appear characteristically and the fluctuations in concentration with respect to time are minimal. The mass concentration of the aerosol above 10 ${\mu}m$ in diameter in the industry area was found to fluctuate significantly. The mass portion of $PM_{10}$ and PM2.5 to TSP in the residence area were 83% and 51% respectively. In the industrial regional, it was found that the mass portion of PM10 and $PM_{2.5}$ to TSP were 76% and 35% respectively. In the boundary area the mass portion of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ to TSP were 78% and 54% respectively.
Chlorine is widely used as a disinfectant in drinking-water systems throughout the world. Chlorine residual was used as an indicator for prediction of water quality in water distribution systems. The variation of chlorine residual in drinking water distribution systems of Suwon city was simulated using EPANET. EPANET is a computerized simulation model which predicts the dynamic hydraulic and water quality behavior within a water distribution system operating over an extended time period. Sampling and analysis were performed to calibrated the computer model in 1999 (Aug. Summer). Water quality variables used in simulations are temperature, roughness coefficient, pipe diameter, pipe length, water demand, velocity and so on. Extended water residence time affected water quality due to the extended reaction time in some areas. All area showed the higher concentration of chlorine residual than 0.2mg/l(standard). So it can be concluded that any area in Suwon city is not in biological regrowth problem. Rechlorination turned out to be an useful method for uniform concentration of free chlorine residual in distribution system. The cost of disinfectant could be saved remarkably by cutting down the initial chlorine concentration to the level which guarantees minimum concentration (0.2mg/l) throughout the distribution system.
