  • In the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008, while numerous members of the general public lost their homes and jobs, many of the largest banks held responsible for the crisis have been successfully rescued by bailouts. In this paper, through the analysis of income inequality, unemployment, tax cuts, and bailouts, we show that the interests of the general public are different from the interests of politicians and bankers. While the small elite group of politicians and bankers could set the deregulation policies with inordinate power based on full information, most people were ignorant and unconcerned about the policies, and hence did not oppose them. Specifically, we model the credit change in the financial markets of the United States by a finite state machine, and design three local supervisors representing three groups with different interests. It is then shown that the deregulation policies were adopted according to the difference of the supervisors' powers.

  • Nuclear factor I-C (NFI-C) plays a pivotal role in various cellular processes such as odontoblast and osteoblast differentiation. Nfic-deficient mice showed abnormal tooth and bone formation. The transplantation of Nfic-expressing mouse bone marrow stromal cells rescued the impaired bone formation in $Nfic^{-/-}$ mice. Studies suggest that NFI-C regulate osteogenesis and dentinogenesis in concert with several factors including transforming growth factor-${\beta}1$, $Kr{\ddot{u}}ppel$-like factor 4, and ${\beta}$-catenin. This review will focus on the function of NFI-C during tooth and bone formation and on the relevant pathways that involve NFI-C.

  • The valuable fossils are distributed in Korean peninsula. In consequence of the development of inland, many road constructions and other public works have been carried out. As a matter of course, lots of paleontological materials in Kyongsang basin were destroyed. Fortunately, one of them was rescued and restored in a suitable place by authors. A fine 4×5 m sandstone slab having about 40 dinosaur tracks was brought from Sangchon-ri, Jinju city, and restored at Danghangpo, Goseong County, Gyeongsangnam-do Province. This fossil bearing slab suggests dinosaurs' ecology and paleo-environment during the early Cretaceous Period of Kyongsang basin.

  • An approximately 8-month-old, 2.61 kg, male Siamese kitten was referred with primary complaints of a 1-week history of respiratory distress, exercise intolerance and dyspnea. Diagnostic studies identified III/VI systolic murmur in the cardiac auscultation, right ventricular enlargement patterns in the electrocardiogram, pleural effusion and right-sided cardiomegaly in the thoracic radiography, and right marked ventricular dilatation, right atrial enlargement, atrial septal defect and abnormal left atrium divided by fibromuscular membrane. Based on these findings, the case was diagnosed as cor triatriatum sinistrum complicated with an ostium primum atrial septal defect. The cat was rescued with furosemide, nitroglycerine, oxygen supplement and fluid removal from pleural cavity.

  • A wild Falco tinnunculus, which is a small raptor, was rescued and presented due to immobilization. On physical examination, a left ulnar fracture was detected, which was reduced with an intramedullary (IM) pin and soft bandaging. Passive range of motion (PROM) exercises were then conducted to prevent complications such as ankylosis. The raptor was released into the wild four weeks postoperatively. We suggest that IM pinning with bandaging and appropriate PROM exercises may effectively treat ulnar fractures in small raptors.

  • The Ramayana is a very popular epic in Southeast Asia. It is the story of King Rama who must save his kidnapped wife, Sita. After Sita was abducted by the Demon King Ravana (Tosakanth) and taken to Lanka, Rama and his brother rescued her with the help of the monkey warriors, especially with the help of the Monkey King Hanuman. Along the way, the epic teaches Hindu life lessons. Today The Ramayana is told and retold through literature, theatre, orally, in movies, and is referenced in many other forms of popular culture. Nowadays, in Thailand, Ravana and Hanuman deconstruct the role of divine and become folk deities that also find their places in calendar art, advertising and stamps, etc. And in Vietnam, Ravana and Hanuman have become the two figures that can't be absent from Southern Vietnam Khmer ceremonies. In this article, our aim is to show how Ravana and Hanuman became symbols of popular culture (case studies in Thailand and Vietnam). The data provided in this article is drawn from field surveys with reliable reference resources.

  • Most animals face frequent periods of starvation throughout their entire life and thus need to appropriately adjust their behavior and metabolism during starvation for their survival. Such adaptive responses are regulated by a complex set of systemic signals, including hormones and neuropeptides. While much progress has been made in identifying pathways that regulate nutrient-excessive states, it is still incompletely understood how animals systemically signal their nutrient-deficient states. Here, we showed that the FMRFamide neuropeptide FLP-20 modulates a systemic starvation response in Caenorhabditis elegans. We found that mutation of flp-20 rescued the starvation hypersensitivity of the G protein β-subunit gpb-2 mutants by suppressing excessive autophagy. FLP-20 acted in AIB neurons, where the metabotropic glutamate receptor MGL-2 also functions to modulate a systemic starvation response. Furthermore, FLP-20 modulated starvation-induced fat degradation in a manner dependent on the receptor-type guanylate cyclase GCY-28. Collectively, our results reveal a circuit that senses and signals nutrient-deficient states to modulate a systemic starvation response in multicellular organisms.

  • We describe a case of gastrocnemius muscle rupture in a goral that got caught in a live trap set up to capture wild boars. We established a diagnostic method based on clinical signs and imaging examination findings, including magnetic resonance imaging for gastrocnemius muscle rupture with symptoms such as hindlimb lameness and plantigrade posture of unknown cause in wild animals. Although this condition is rare, this report will help veterinarians diagnose several diseases of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems in wild animals. This is the first report of successful diagnosis and treatment of gastrocnemius muscle rupture in gorals in Korea.

  • We recently demonstrated that satellite regions exhibit an aberrant DNA methylation in cloned bovine embryos. Here, we examined, using bisulfite -sequencing technology, whether the inefficient demethylation of cloned donor genomes could be rescued by the presence of oocytic nuclei. Both AciI digestion and sequencing analyses showed that satellite sequence was demethylated more efficiently in cloned tetraploid blastocysts than in diploid clones. When methyl -CpG density (the number of methyl-CpG sites per string) was scored, a significant decrease was observed In tetraploids (P<0.001). These results suggest that unknown mechanisms provided by oocytic nuclei could assist the demethylation of satellite sequences in tetraploid clones.

  • An adult raccoon dog with extensive, deep, and contaminated wounds on the right hip and multiple fractures was rescued. The open wound was managed daily by debridement and flushing for 3 weeks. Modified active drainage was then performed, and antibiotics administered according to the antibiotic susceptibility test. After 2 weeks, the exudate disappeared and the drain was removed. After monitoring for 1 month, the animal was released in to the wild. This case shows that even if infection remains, rapid wound repair is possible if appropriate antibiotic selection through regular examination and active drainage are combined.
