Disk brake system transforms a large amount of kinetic energy to thermal energy in a short time. As the size and speed of automotive increases in recent years, the disk brakes absorbs more thermal energy. And this thermal energy can cause an unacceptable braking performance due to the high transient temperature, that is attained at the friction surface of brake disk and pad. Although these high temperatures are one of the biggest problems. In this study, the overall thermal behavior of ventilated disk brake system was investigated by numerical method. The 3-Dimensional unsteady model was simulated by using a general purpose software package “FLUENT” to obtain the temperature distributions of disk and pad. The model includes the more realistic braking method, which repeats braking and release. The effects of several parameters such as the repeated braking, inlet air velocity and thermal conductivity on the temperature distribution were investigated.
A transient heat transfer and thermal stress analysis for a brake drum of commercial vehicles have been performed by ANSYS code in the cases of single braking and the repeated braking condition. The temperature and thermal stress distributions in the brake drum under various braking conditions were obtained using a two-dimensional axisymmetric model. In case of deceleration of 0.3G with an initial vehicle speed of 60km/h, the maximum temperature in the drum was $87.6^{\circ}C$ after braking application. The maximum stress of 78.7MPa in the drum occurred at the intersection between the flange and hat under a condition in which repeated 15 cycles braking with an initial vehicle speed of 60km/h and a deceleration of 0.3G is applied to according to KS R1129. The maximum stress value is much lower than the yield strength of drum material(FC250).
The brakes employed on commercial vehicles must be able to withstand three types of demanding services which are use-emergency stops from high speed, many repeated stops as in a delivery or bus route, and speed control in mountain descents. Two type of friction brakes are in use ; drum breaks and disc brakes. Drum brakes are of the internally expanding type in which two shoes fitted externally with friction material are forced outward against the inside of a rotating drum on the wheel unit. In this case, the Braking power is produced by the friction force between a drum and a lining, and is converted into heat. In this research an unsteady state heat transfer analysis for drum brake system of heavy truck has been performed by ABAQUS/standard code in the case of single-braking and the repeated braking condition. The temperature histories obtained by the finite Element analysis have been compared with the result calculated by the simplified formulation and the result obtained by the experiment of real vehicle conditions.
The adequate design of a passenger car braking system, which is directly related to the safety of a car, is very important since the safety is an essential design parameter of a car to keep men and car from the damage. The thermal behaviors of the ventilated disk has been investigated based on the air cooling effects during repeat braking operations. In this study, the thermal behavior of ventilated disk brake system was investigated by numerical method. The 3-Dimensional unsteady model was simulated by using a general purpose software package “FLUENT” to obtain the temperature distributions of disk and pad. The model includes the more realistic braking method, which repeats braking and release. The effects of aspect ratio of ventilated hole on the heat dissipation was investigated.
Braking is a basic and an important safety feature for all vehicles, and the final braking performance of a vehicle is determined by the vehicle's ABS performance and tire performance. However, the combination of excellent ABS and tires will not always ensure good braking performance. This is due to the fact that tire performance has non-linearity and uncertainty in predicting the repeated increase and decrease of wheel slip when activating the ABS, thus increasing the uncertainty of tire performance prediction. Furthermore, existing studies predicted braking performance after using an ABS that used a wheel slip control as a controller, which was different from an actual vehicle's ABS that controlled angular acceleration, therefore causing a decrease in the prediction accuracy of the braking performance. This paper reverse-designed the ABS that controlled angular acceleration based on the information on brake pressure, etc., which were obtained from vehicle tests, and established a braking performance prediction analysis model by combining a multi-body dynamics(MBD) vehicle model and a magic formula(MF) tire model. The established analysis model was verified after comparing it with the results of the braking tests of an actual vehicle. Using this analysis model, this study analyzed the braking effect by vehicle factor, and finally designed a tire that had optimized braking performance. As a result of this study, it was possible to design the MF tire model whose braking performance improved by 9.2 %.
By the increasing amount of vehicles, the increase of car accident served as a major momentum for remind the importance of braking system. The adequate design of a passenger car braking system, which is directly related to the safety of a car, is very important since the safety is an essential design parameter of a car to keep men and car from the damage. The thermal behaviors of the ventilated disk has been investigated based on the air cooling effects during repeat braking operations. In this study, the temperature and velocity fields of 3-D unsteady simulated model are obtained using a software package "FLUENT". The numerical results show that there exits a temperature nonuniformity between the disk faces contacting with pads.
Braking system is directly related to the safety of a vehicle and the brake discs are essential part of the braking system. Due to the repeated frictional forces and torque during braking, brake discs are always works at high temperature and high pressure. Furthermore, the brake disc is one of major tuning components in aftermarket, the braking performance of the brake disc should be evaluated for establishing the certification standards of tuning components. This paper proposes the test method to evaluate the performance of tuning brake discs.
The brake system is an important part of the automobile safety system. The disc brake system is divided into two parts: a rotating axi-symmetrical disc, and the stationary pads. The frictional heat, which is generated on the interface of the disc and pads, can cause high temperatures during the braking process. The frictional heat source (the pads) is moving on the disc and the location is time-dependent. Our study applies a moving heat source, which is defined by the time and space variable on the frictional surface, in order to simulate the frictional heat behavior accurately during the braking process. The object of the present work is the determination of the temperature distribution and thermal stress in the solid disc by non-axisymmetric 3D modeling for repeated braking.
Railway wheels and axles belong to the most critical components in railway vehicles. The service conditions of railway vehicles became more severe in recent years due to the increase of speed. Therefore, a more precise evaluation of wheelset life and safety has been requested. Wheel/rail contact fatigue and thermal cracks due to braking heat are two main mechanisms of the railway wheel failure. In this paper, an evaluation procedure for the contact fatigue life of railway wheel is proposed. One of the main sources of the contact zone failure is the residual stress. The residual stress on wheel is formed during the manufacturing process which includes a heat treatment, and then is changed by contact stress developed by wheel/rail contact and thermal stress induced by braking. Also, the cyclic stress history for fatigue analysis is determined by applying finite elements analysis for the moving contact load. The objective of this paper is to estimate fatigue life by considering residual stress due to heat treatment, braking and repeated contact load, respectively.
Continuous contraction and expansion of disk brake can be due to friction and temperature difference at repeated sudden braking. As serious vibration at disk is produced, the braking force will be changed ununiformly and braking system can not be stabilized. Temperature and heat flux at disk brake are investigated by structural and thermal analysis in this study. The maximum equivalent stress and displacement are shown respectively at the ventilated hole and the lower part of disk plate. At thermal analysis of initial state, temperature on disk plate is distributed from $95.9^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. The maximum heat flux of $0.0168W/mm^2$ is shown at the inner friction part between disk plate and pad. At thermal analysis of transient state, temperature on disk plate is distributed from $95^{\circ}C$ to $96.5^{\circ}C$ after 100 second. The maximum heat flux of $0.0024W/mm^2$ is also shown at the inner friction part between disk plate and pad. By comparing with initial state, the temperature on disk plate is more uniformly distributed and heat flux is more decreased by 7 times at transient state.
