In this study, we prepared pelletized porous carbon adsorbent (PCA) according to the different pyrolysis temperature using activated carbon and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a binder for the removal of toluene, which is one of the representative volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We investigated physical characteristics of PCA using FE-SEM, BET, TGA and evaluated their adsorption capacity for toluene using GC. It was confirmed that the formability of pellets composed of the activated carbon, PVA and solvent of mass mixing ratio was 1 : 0.2 : 0.8 was the most outstanding. Toluene adsorption capacity was evaluated by measuring the maximum time when more than 99% of toluene adsorbed on the pellet. The specific surface area of the adsorbent pyrolyzed at $300^{\circ}C$ was measured as 4.7 times in $941.9m^2/g$ compared to that of the unpyrolyzed pellet. Micropore volume and toluene adsorption capacity of PCA increased fivefold to be 0.30 cc/g and thirteenfold to be 26 hours compared to that of the unpyrolyzed pellet, respectively. These results were attributed to the change of pore size and specific surface area due to the PVA content and the different pyrolysis temperature.
Powdery mildew caused by Podosphaera fusca is one of the most important diseases in leafy lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Since the disease has been a threat to safe cultivation of leafy lettuce, its control methods have to develop to produce good quality of lettuce for farmer and consumer. Occurrence of lettuce powdery mildew is increasing more and more due to continuous cultivation of lettuce all through the year, non-removal of diseased plant parts of lettuce, spray of inadequate fungicides by mistaken acknowledge of lettuce powdery mildew for lettuce downy mildew, etc. The control effect of five fungicides against lettuce powdery mildew was examined in a plastic greenhouse located in Suwon. When fungicides were sprayed three times at 10 days-intervals in the early stage of occurrence of powdery mildew, the incidence of powdery mildew in the plants treated with kresoxim-methy SC, azoxystrobin SC, Ampelomyces quisqualis AQ94013 WP, Paenibacillus polymyxa AC-1 SC and Bacillus subtilis Y 1336 WP was 0.7%, 0.7%, 26.0%, 36.7% and 42.0%, respectively, whereas the incidence of non-treated control was 55.3% on eight days after final application. Phytotoxicity of five fungicides tested was not observed in lettuce seedling plants.
In this study, we measured antioxidant activity as DPPH radical scavenging and the total polyphenol content of pulverized and lyophilized oak pollens inoculated with fungi to confirm the husk removal effect. The total polyphenol content of oak pollen was highest in lyophilized pollen medium inoculated with Armillaria mellea, and was lowest in pollen inoculated with Lentinula edodes. Total polyphenol content of the lyophilized pollen was higher than that of the refined pollen and the pulverized pollen in oak pollen germinated with A. mellea. The total polyphenol content of the lyophilized oak pollen germinated with A. mellea was 1.4-fold higher than that extracted with water. Measurement of antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2, 2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging method showed that the lyophilized oak pollen germinated with A. mellea had the highest and that germinated with L. edodes was lowest in antioxidant activities. The lyophilized oak pollen germinated with A. mellea was 2 to 4 times higher than that extracted with water in the antioxidant activity of DPPH free radical scavenging. Many germinated cells were formed around pore of acorn pollen inoculated with L. edodes, while those were formed at the end of hyphae derived from oak pollen inoculated with A. mellea.
This study was conducted to examine O'leary index, patient hygiene performance (PHP) index, and toothbrushing practice assessment in subjects of college students in 20s who had been randomly selected. The purpose of this study is to examine if it is easy for rolling method which is recommended by many dental professionals in Korea to implement and to effectively remove dental plaque. Also, the correlations between dental plaque index and toothbrushing practice assessment with the course of time was confirmed, after instruction session on toothbrushing was provided. STATA 11.0 (StataCorp) was used for analysis. There was no significant difference on the three ways of O'leary index, PHP index, and toothbrushing practice assessment in using rolling method, bass technique and toothpick method when comparing the average resulting from first to third instruction session on toothbrushing. O'leary index, PHP index, and toothbrushing practice assessment were inspected with Kruskal-Wallis test which is used for non-parametric statistics. They were checked three times: the first, before the toothbrushing instruction was given; the second, two weeks after the toothbrushing session was given; and the third, 4 weeks after the session. The results are as follows: O'leary index stood at the lowest in the first experiment but showed the highest in the second (p=0.0001). PHP index was the highest level in the first trial and decreased in the second time, but increased again in the last examination (p=0.0001). Toothbrushing practice assessment also showed a similar tendency with PHP index (p=0.0001). In conclusion, rolling method is not the best option for everyone, and it is thought that more various toothbrushing ways need to be reviewed and recommended to people. Also, institutional framework is required for the continuous education on toothbrushing to be in place as the effectiveness of the education is decreased with time.
The aim of this study was to determine the shear bond properties of four dentin bonding systems to internal cervical dentin, and to investigate the effect of the pretreatment for removing smear layer and position of dentin on shear bond strength of dentin bonding agents. The materials tested in this study were consisted of four commercially available dentin bonding systems[Allbond 2(AB), Clearfil Linerbond 2(CL), Optibond FL(OP), Scotchbond Multi-purpose(SB)], a restorative light-cured composite resin[Z100]J and a chelating agent[RC-prep(RC)]. Fifty-six freshly extracted human molars were used in this study. Dentin specimens were prepared by first cutting the root of the tooth 1mm below the cementoenamel junction with a diamond bur in a high speed handpiece under air-water coolant, and then removing occlusal part at pulp horn level by means of a second parallel section, The root canal areas were exposed by means of cutting the dent in specimens perpendicular to the root axis. Dentin specimens were randomly assigned to two groups(pretreated group, not-pretreated group) based on the pretreatment method of dentin surface. In pretreated group, RC was applied to dentin surface for 1minute and then rinsed with NaOCl. In not-pretreated group, dentin surface was rinsed with saline Each groups were subdevided into four groups according to dentin bonding systems. Four dentin bonding systems and a restorative resin were applied according to the directions of manufacturer. The dentin-resin specimens were embedded in a cold cure acrylic resin, and were cut with a low speed diamond saw to the dimension of $1{\times}1mm$. The cut specimens were divided into three groups according to the position of internal cervical dentin. The shear bond properties of dentin-resin specimens were measured with Universal testing machine (Zwick, 020, Germany) with the cross head speed of 0.5mm/min. From this experiment. the following results were obtained : 1. In case of shear bond strength, there was no significant difference among dentin bonding systems in not-pretreated groups, whereas in pretreated groups, the shear bond strengths of AB and of SB were statistically significantly higher than those of CL and of OP. 2. The shear bond strengths of AB and of SB in pretreated groups were significantly higher than those in not-pretreated groups. 3. The shear bond strengths of radicular layer of OP were higher than those of occlusal layer of OP in not-pretreated groups, and of AB in pretreated groups. The shear bond strengths of radicular layer of AB and of CL in not-pretreated groups were higher than those in pretreated group.

In this study, we have made the annual total phosphorus (TP) mass balance diagrams for I wastewater treatment plant by utilizing the data of flow rate and TP of each process and tried to choose the optimum unit process empirically for phosphorus recovery. For the applicability evaluation, we have suggested several quantitative indices of flow rate, TP concentration, TP load and SS. Based on the analyses of TP mass balance, it became clear for reducing TP load of the wastewater treatment plant that it is efficient to recover phosphorus from the side stream in which the amount of flow rate is just 1/16, but TP concentration and load are 78 and 4.8 times larger than those of the influent of the plant. After the detailed applicability evaluation for the side stream, it could be concluded that the unit process of waste activated sludge thickener supernatant or dehydration filtrate are appropriate. Meanwhile, we did fundamental experiments utilizing the dewatering filtrate with TP concentration of 141.5 mg/L. After adjusting pH 10 and $Ca^{2+}$ concentration 250, 500, 1000 mg/L, it was stirred slowly. As a result, the $PO_4-P$ and TP removal efficiencies were above 95 percent; the results of the experiment imply the applicability of phosphorus recovery process in a wastewater treatment plant strongly.
Physical properties of rocks are strongly dependant on details of pore micro-structures, which can be used for quantifying relations between physical properties of rocks through pore-scale simulation techniques. Recently, high-resolution scan techniques, such as X-ray microtomography and high performance computers make it possible to calculate permeability from pore micro-structures of rocks. We try to extend this simulation methodology to velocity and electrical conductivity. However, the smoothing effect during tomographic inversion creates artifacts in pore micro-structures and causes inaccurate property estimation. To mitigate this artifact, we tried to use sharpening filter and neural network classification techniques. Both methods gave noticeable improvement in pore structure imaging and accurate estimation of permeability and electrical conductivity, which implies that our method effectively removes the smoothing effect in pore structures. However, the calculated velocities showed only incremental improvement. By comparison between thin section images and tomogram, we found that our resolution is not high enough, and it is mainly responsible for the inaccuracy in velocity despite the successful removal of the smoothing effect. In conclusion, our methods can be very useful for pore-scale modeling, since it can create accurate pore structure without the smoothing effect. For accurate velocity estimation, the resolution of pore structure should be at least three times higher than that for permeability simulation.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage DNA and cause cancer. Therefore, the research is being conducted on the development of antioxidants for the removal of ROS. This study was performed to investigate antioxidant activity and protective effect against oxidative DNA damage using ethyl acetate fractions from the cone of Pinus rigida × taeda (ERT). The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging assay, reducing power assay, and Fe2+ chelating assay. Also, the contents of phenolic compounds and vitamin C related to antioxidant activity were analyzed to confirm phytochemicals. The DNA protective effect against oxidative stress was confirmed by the φX-174 RF I plasmid DNA cleavage assay. As a result, ERT showed DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities in a concentration-dependent manner. The results of reducing power and Fe2+ chelating activities were 77.32 ± 2.28% and 64.09 ± 1.01% at 200 ㎍/㎖. Also, ERT showed a DNA protective effect against oxidative stress.

Landscape structure changes over the past three decades were determined with land use and land cover(LULC) maps, and their relationships with mean air temperature time series were the analyzed for the Busan metropolitan area and South Kyeongsang Province, Korea. The geometric structures of the LULC data were quantitatively represented based on FRAGSTATS, a spatial pattern analysis program for quantifying landscape structure. FRAGSTATS-derived landscape metrics confirmed that there were major changes in LULC and landscape fragmentation in the region. Meteorological observation records showed that mean air temperature had increased from $14.1^{\circ}C$ in the 1990's to $14.8^{\circ}C$ in the 2000's in Busan. For South Kyeongsang Province, they increased from $13.2^{\circ}C$ to $13.9^{\circ}C$ during the same time period. These long-term temperature changes are correlated with typical spatial pattern changes of LULC in the southeastern region of the country. Spatial metrics analysis showed that urban area expanded from 9.7% to 26.8% of Busan while forest and agricultural land decreased by 9.6% and 14.9%, respectively over the past thirty years. The significant urbanization are tightly associated with deforestation, removal of agricultural land, and fast temperature increases since the 1990's. The urban area of South Kyeongsang Province rapidly increased, and it became 12 times as large as it was. The degree of temperature increases differed among three different sub-regions. The temperature increasing rate was lowest in the coastal region while the colder mountainous region had the highest figure.
In this study, aluminum hydroxide ($Al(OH)_3$) was synthesized by Bayer process and sodium contained in $Al(OH)_3$ was removed with the acid solution such as HCl and acetic acid for the synthesis of high purity alumina. The bauxite produced in Queensland of Australia was used for the production of alumina by Bayer, and was crushed to a particle size of below 10 um by attrition mill. The crushed bauxite was treated in sodium hydroxide solution of 5 N for the elution of aluminum component. The elution of aluminum from bauxite was carried out at $140^{\circ}C$ and 3.4 atm in autoclave. The sample solution was separated to the red mud and liquid solution by filter paper. The elution of aluminum from bauxite was confirmed with changing a structure and aluminum content in both bauxite and red mud analyzed by XRD and EDX. Aluminum contained in the separated solution was crystallized to $Al(OH)_3$ with the addition of aluminum hydroxide used as the seed material. $Al(OH)_3$ powder obtained during the crystallization process was purified by several times washing with distillated water. It was also confirmed that the sodium remained in $Al(OH)_3$ powder is removed with acid solution. The purity of $Al(OH)_3$ powder produced in this study was 99.3% and the content of sodium was reduced to approximately 0.009% after the acid treatment.
