  • Detection and identification of targets from remotely sensed imagery are of great interest for civilian and military application. This paper presents an algorithm for target detection in high spatial resolution imagery based on the spectral and the dimensional characteristics of the reference target. In this algorithm, the spectral and the dimensional information of the reference target is extracted automatically from the sample image of the reference target. Then in the entire image, the candidate target pixels are extracted based on the spectral characteristics of the reference target. Finally, groups of candidate pixels which form isolated spatial objects of similar size to that of the reference target are extracted as detected targets. The experimental test results showed that even though the algorithm detected spatial objects which has different shape as targets if the spectral and the dimensional characteristics are similar to that of the reference target, it could detect 97.5% of the targets in the image. Using hyperspectral image and utilizing the shape information are expected to increase the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we introduce a newly developed photogrammetric software for automatic generation of high quality geo-products and its performance assessment carried out using various satellite images. Our newly developed software provides the latest techniques of an optimized sensor modelling, ortho-image generation and automated Digital Elevation Model (DEM) generation for diverse remote sensing images. In particular, images from dual- and multi-sensor images can be integrated for 3D mapping. This can be a novel innovation toward a wider applicability of remote sensing data, since 3D mapping has been limited within only single-sensor so far. We used Kompsat-2, Ikonos, QuickBird, Spot-5 high resolution satellite images to test an accuracy of 3D points and ortho-image generated by the software. Outputs were assessed by comparing reliable reference data. From various sensor combinations 3D mapping were implemented and their accuracy was evaluated using independent check points. Model accuracy of 1~2 pixels or better was achieved regardless of sensor combination type. The high resolution ortho-image results are consistent with the reference map on a scale of 1:5,000 after being rectified by the software and an accuracy of 1~2 pixels could be achieved through quantitative assessment. The developed software offers efficient critical geo-processing modules of various remote sensing images and it is expected that the software can be widely used to meet the demand on the high-quality geo products.

  • Ocean satellite altimetry-implied free-air gravity anomalies have had the shortest wavelengths removed during the processing to generate the optimal solution between multiple radar altimeter missions. ERS-1 168day mission altimetry was residualized to a reference geoid surface generated by integrating Anderson & Knudsen’s free-air gravity anomalies for the Barents Sea. The altimetry tracks were reduced and filtered to extract the shortest wavelengths (between 4 and 111 km) from both ascending and descending tracks, respectively. These data were recombined using existing quadrant-swapping techniques in the wavenumber domain to generate a correlated, high frequency gravity field related to the local geologic sources. This added-value surface adjusted the reference free-air gravity anomalies to better reflect features in the gravity field at a wavelength related to the distance between altimetry ground tracks.

  • Although EOC data have been frequently used in several applications since the launch of the KOMPSAT-1 satellite in 1999, its radiometric characteristics are not clear due to the inherent limitations of the on-board calibration system. The radiometric characteristics of remotely sensed imagery can be measured by the sensitivity of radiant flux coming from various surface features on the earth. The objective of this study is to analyze the radiometric characteristics of EOC data by simulating the sensor- received radiance. Initially, spectral reflectance values of reference targets were measured on the ground by using a portable spectre-radiometer at the EOC spectrum. A radiative transfer model, LOWTRAN, then simulated the sensor-received radiance values of the same reference target. By correlating the digital number (DN) extracted from the EOC image to the corresponding radiance values simulated from LOWTRAN, we could find the radiometric calibration coefficients for EOC image. The radiometric gain coefficients of EOC are very similar to those of other panchromatic optical sensors.

  • In present, most of metallic structures(gas pipeline, oil pipeline, water pipeline, etc) are running parallel with subway and power line in seoul. Moreover subway system and power line make a stray current due to electrical corrosion on metallic structures. The owner of metallic structures has a burden of responsibility for the protection of corrosion and the prevention against big accident such as gas explosion or soil pollution and so on. So, they have to measure and analyze the data about P/S(Pipe to Soil) potential due to stray current of subway system. So, we have developed the Real-time Wireless Remote Monitoring System for Stray Current of Subway System. In this system, the permanent buried type reference electrode is necessary. In this paper, results of development of buried type reference electrode using porous ceramic$({\alpha}-Al_{2}O_{3})$ are presented.

  • This paper presents a method to evaluate the performance of subpixel localization operators using target image data. Subpixel localization of edges is important to extract the precise shape of objects from images. In this study, each target image was designed to provide reference lines and edges to which the localization operators can be applied. We selected two types of moment-based operators: Gray-level Moment (GM) operator and Spatial Moment (SM) operator for comparison. The original edge localization operators with kernel size 5 are tested and their extended versions with kernel size 7 are also tested. Target images were collected with varying Camera-to-Object Distance (COD). From the target images, reference lines are estimated and edge profiles along the estimated reference lines are accumulated. Then, evaluation of the performance of edge localization operators was performed by comparing the locations calculated by each operator and by superimposing them on edge profiles. Also, enhancement of edge localization by increasing the kernel size was also quantified. The experimental result shows that the SM operator whose kernel size is 7 provides higher accuracy than other operators implemented in this study.

  • It is difficult to classify tidal flat surface that is composed of a mixture of mud, sand, water and microphytobenthos. We used a Linear Spectral Unmixing (LSU) method for effectively classifying the tidal flat surface characteristics within a pixel. This study aims at 1) detecting algal mat using LSU in the Saemangeum tidal flats, 2) determining a suitable end-member selection method in tidal flats, and 3) find out a habitual characteristics of algal mat. Two types of end-member were built; one is a reference end-member derived from field spectrometer measurements and the other image end-member. A field spectrometer was used to measure spectral reflectance, and a spectral library was accomplished by shape difference of spectra, r.m.s. difference of spectra, continuum removal and Mann-Whitney U-test. Reference end-members were extracted from the spectral library. Image end-members were obtained by applying Principle Component Analysis (PCA) to an image. The LSU method was effective to detect microphytobenthos, and successfully classified the intertidal zone into algal mat, sediment, and water body components. The reference end-member was slightly more effective than the image end-member for the classification. Fine grained upper tidal flat is generally considered as a rich habitat for algal mat. We also identified unusual microphytobenthos that inhabited coarse grained lower tidal flats.

  • In this study, remote articulation training system which connects the hearing disabled trainee and the speech therapist via B-ISDN is introduced. The hearing disabled does not have the hearing feedback of his own pronuciation, and the chance of watching his speech organs movement trajectory will offer him the self-training of articulation. So the system has two purposes of self articulation training and trainer's on-line checking in remote place. We estimate the vocal tract articultory movements from the speech signal using inverse modelling and display the movement trajectoy on the sideview of human face graphically. The trajectories of trainees articulation is displayed along with the reference trajectories, so the trainee can control his articulating to make the two trajectories overlapped. For on-line communication and ckecking training record the system has the function of video conferencing and tranferring articulatory data.

  • Telematics is an emerging industrial field made up of the convergence of technologies. The key technologies for Telematics are server-side technology, terminal-side technology, communication-related technology, and positioning technology. Standardization in Telematics is now getting more notice these days. Domestic situation is explained for several related facilities such as ETRI, TTA, and Telematics Standardization Forum. In this paper, we will focus especially on the standard reference model that is the most fundamental framework of Telematics technology standardization. In the reference model, the Telematics system is composed of Telematics client part, communication part, and Telematics server part. The Telematics client part consists of terminal, positioning device, and car electronic devices. Communication part can be composed of various telecommunication channels such as CDMA, WLAN, DMB, WiBro, etc. which can guarantee the seamless two-way communication. Telematics server part is composed of TSP(Telematics Service Provider) server and CP(Contents Provider) servers gathering and managing the various Telematics services. This Telematics reference model is expected to be utilized as the base architecture in developing the technology and standards from now on.

  • An Remote Corrosion Monitoring (RCM) system consists of an anode with low potential, the metallic structures against corrosion, an electrode to provide reference potential, and a data-acquisition system to ensure the potential difference for anticorrosion. In more detail, the data-acquisition (DAQ) system monitors the potential difference between the metallic structures and a reference electrode to identify the correct potential level against the corrosion of the infrastructures. Then, the measured data are transmitted to a central office to remotely keep track of the status of the corrosion monitoring (CM) system. To date, the RCM system is designed to achieve low power consumption, so that it can be simply powered by batteries. However, due to memory effect and the limited number of recharge cycles, it can entail the maintenance fee or sometimes cause failure to protect the metallic structures. To address this issue, the low-overhead energy harvesting circuitry for the RCM systems has designed to replenish energy storage elements (ESEs) along with redeeming the leakage of supercapacitors. Our developed energy harvester can scavenge the ambient energy from the corrosion monitoring environments and store it as useful electrical energy for powering local data-acquisition systems. In particular, this paper considers the energy harvesting from potential difference due to galvanic corrosion between a metallic infrastructure and a permanent copper/copper sulfate reference electrode. In addition, supercapacitors are adopted as an ESE to compensate for or overcome the limitations of batteries. Experimental results show that our proposed harvesting schemes significantly reduce the overhead of the charging circuitry, which enable fully charging up to a 350-F supercapacitor under the low corrosion power of 3 mW (i.e., 1 V/3 mA).
