  • Diffuse pollution has been considering as a major source of the quality deterioration of water resources. The establishment of riparian vegetation strips or buffers along those areas of water bodies is used to reduce the threat of diffuse pollution. Remote sensing offers a means by which critical areas could be identified, so that subsequent action toward the establishment of riparian zones can be taken. On the behalf of KOMPSAT-2 satellite imagery as a high resolution spatial data, Landsat TM satellite data are used to aquire the land cover for the riparian buffers studied. This investigation aims to assess the riparian buffers established on the upper Geum river as a pollution mitigation. Through comparing the delineation of riparian buffer zones developed with the existing zones established by the government, we can find the critical distortion points of the existing riparian buffer zone.

  • The extraction of earthquake damage from remote sensed imagery requires high spatial resolution and temporal effectiveness of acquisition of imagery. The analog photographs and visual interpretation were taken traditionally. Now it is possible to acquire damage information from many commercial high resolution RS satellites. The key techniques are processing velocity and precision. The authors developed the automatic / semiautomatic image process techniques including feature enhancement, and classification, designed the emergency Earthquake Damage and Losses Evaluate System based on Remote Sensing (RSEDLES). The paper introduced the functions of RSEDLES as well as its application to the earthquakes occurred recently.

  • In the study, the feasibility of landscape ecological measures as indices system for interpretation and evaluation of regional ecosystem was investigated through the application to Yongin City. Each patch metrics well showed the class structure and supplemented the class metrics, and class metrics also showed well the landscape structure and supplemented the landscape metrics. And the change analysis through subtraction of two set of landscape ecological measurement in two point of time showed the dynamic trends very well. One of the dynamic trends in Yongin City was the rapid fragmentation. While there was no landcover data on Yongin City, using Landsat data and remote sensing techniques were proved to be efficient and effective to produce the digital landcover data.

  • The purpose of this paper is to test the applicability of the rural amenity values assessment model(RAVAM) to a case study area. To verify the practical applicabilities of the RAVAM, south-east area of Kyounggi province was selected as a study area. Full data of 101 Myuns of Kyounggi province were gathered with Geographic In-formation System(GIS) and Remote Sensing(RS) techniques. All the 101 Myuns' rural amenity resources were assessed. Cluster analysis was performed on almost intact nature, interaction between nature and man, man-made amenity values to classify rural amenity characteristics. It was expected that the proposed RAVAM could be used in developing rural development plans considering local rural amenity resources' distribution.

  • The arid regions of western China are currently the focus of extensive exploration and development. This paper reports on recent experience gained by Chinese and Canadian project team members in the use of a variety of Earth observation satellite imagery for oil exploration and environmental assessment exercises in the Kuche area of Xinjiang. Through careful archival data selection and more recent data acquisition schemes, we have established several time series of MODIS, Landsat and Radarsat imagery in order to obtain a better understanding for daily, seasonal as well as decadal changes of the natural environment as well as man-made environmental features.

  • This paper presents a methodology to account for the partial or gradual changes of environmental phenomena in categorical map information for the fusion/integration of multiple spatial data. The fuzzy set based spatial data fusion scheme is applied in order to account for the fuzziness of boundaries in categorical information showing the partial or gradual environmental impacts. The fuzziness or uncertainty of boundary is represented as two kinds of fuzzy membership functions based on fuzzy object concept and the effects of them are quantitatively evaluated with the help of a cross validation procedure. A case study for landslide hazard assessment demonstrates the better performance of this scheme as compared to traditional crisp boundary representation.

  • The phycocyanin pigment (PC) is a marker for cyanobacterial presence in eutrophic inland water. Accurate estimation of low PC concentration in turbid inland water is challenging due to the optical complexity and criticalforissuing an early warning of potentialrisks of cyanobacterial bloom to the public. To monitor cyanobacterial bloom in eutrophic inland waters, an approach is proposed to partition non-water absorption coefficient from measured reflectance and to retrieve absorption coefficient of PC with the aim of improving the accuracy in remotely estimated PC, in particular for low concentrations. The proposed inversion model retrieves absorption spectra of PC ($a_{pc}({\lambda})$) with $R^2{\geq}0.8$ for $a_{pc}(620)$. The algorithm achieved more accurate Chl-a and PC estimation with $0.71{\leq}R^2{\leq}0.85$, relative root mean square error (rRMSE) ${\leq}39.4%$ and mean relative error(RE) ${\leq}78.0%$ than the widely used semi-empirical algorithm for the same dataset. In particular, low PC ($PC{\leq}50mg/m^3$) and low PC: Chl-a ratio values of for all datasets used in this study were well predicted by the proposed algorithm.

  • Environmental impact assessment has been performed as preliminary assessment system in order to conserve environment value and minimize negative effect from development. Assessment based on data has been necessary to strengthen objectivity in process of Environmental impact assessment process. Furthermore extended use of spatial information in Environmental impact assessment system has been required through spatial information provided at government level and possibility connected with spatial information in Environmental impact assessment. However spatial information has not been systematically utilized in current Environmental impact assessment. Also the environmental impact assessment workers including assessment government employees, agencies of Environmental impact assessment document and review agencies lack an understanding in the concept of spatial information, so there is limit about their use to efficiently. In order to improve these limits in use of spatial information, this study suggested measures to standardize spatial information (coordinate and attribute table). To do so, based on coordinate and standards certified by the government, this study defined standard coordinates (GRS-80, central datum point, False East: 100000, False North: 200000) and established 9 default items. Lastly, the aforementioned standards were tested for actual environmental impact assessment projects. Standardization measures suggested in this study are expected to contribute to invigorate spatial information utilization in Environmental impact assessment and expand the scope of the assessment.

  • The wind speed measurement is performed using SODAR and LIDAR to evaluate availability of remote sensing in assessment of wind resource. The intercomparison comprises time series, correlation analysis and recovery rate. It shows that LIDAR is more effective than using SODAR to measure wind speed in ambient disturbance.

  • Load test for newly introduced precast segmental bridge is carried out to experimentally evaluate load carrying capacity, Analysis accompanied with the test is also performed and the results are used in the evaluation. In addition to initial evaluation of the bridge by load test, remote dynamic monitoring system to perform realtime assessment of the bridge condition is also under development. In this paper the procedure and results of load test and evaluation are presented along with introduction of dynamic monitoring system.
