An Improved Gate Control Scheme for Overvoltage Clamping Under High Power IGBTs Switching (IGBT 스위칭시 괴전압 제한을 위한 게이트 구동기법)

  • Under high power IGBTs Switching, a large overvoltage is induced across the IGBT module due to the stray inductance in the circuit. This paper proposes a new gate drive circuit for high power IGBTs which can actively suppress the overvoltage across the driven IGBT at turn-off while preserving the most simple and reliable power circuit. The turn-off driving scheme has adaptive feature to the amplitude of collector current, so that the overvoltage can be limited much effectively at the fault collector current. Experimental results under various normal and fault conditions prove the effectiveness of the proposed.

  • In application of high power IGBT PWM inverters, the treatable power range is considerably limited due to the overvoltage caused by the stray inductance components within the power circuit. This paper proposes a new gate drive circuit for IGBTs which can actively suppress the overvoltage across the driven IGBT at turn-off and the overvoltage across the opposite IGBT at turn-on while preserving the most simple and reliable power circuit. The turn-off driving scheme has adaptive feature to the amplitude of collector current, so that the overvoltage is limited much effectively at the larger collector current. The turn-on scheme is to decrease the rising rate of the collector current by increasing input capacitance during turn-on transient when the gate-emitter voltage is greater than threshold voltage. The experimental results under various normal and fault conditions prove the effectiveness of the proposed circuit.

Current Status and Application of Agricultural Subsurface Dams in Korea (국내 농업용 지하댐의 현황 및 활용 사례)

  • The increasing frequency of droughts has been increasing the necessity of utilizing subsurface dams as reliable groundwater resources in areas where it is difficult to supply adequate agricultural water using only surface water. In this study, we analyzed the current status and actual conditions of five agricultural subsurface dams as well as the effect of obtaining additional groundwater from subsurface dams operated as one aspect of the sustainable integrated water management system. Based on the construction methods and functions of each subsurface dam, the five subsurface dams are classified into three types such as those that derive water from rivers, those that prevent seawater intrusion, and those that link to a main irrigation canal. The classification is based on various conditions including topography, reservoir location, irrigation facilities, and river and alluvial deposit distributions. Agricultural groundwater upstream of subsurface dams is obtained from four to five radial collector wells. From the study, the total amount of groundwater recovered from the subsurface dam is turned out to be about 29~44% of the total irrigation water demand, which is higher than that of general agricultural groundwater of about 4.6%.

The Study on the Third Rail Current Collecting Characteristics for Light Rail Transit (경량전철 제 3궤조 집전특성에 관한 연구(I))

  • In the design of the light rail transit which is more reliable and economical, it is essential to develope a efficient third rail system. Especially, the analysis for the conductivity of conduct rail and the wear of collecting shoe is the first step of its development. In this paper, experiments for conductivity in conductor rail, wear in collecting shoe were performed respectively as different materials of conductor rail and current collector. Noise level and interruption, wear and contact resistance of collecting shoe were proposed as design parameters for the development of this system. Experimental equipment and methods of design parameter stated above were proposed, which is expected that analyzed results will be used as a basic data for the development of the system.

  • Zn-Air energy storage cell is an attractive type of batteries due to its theoretical gravimetric energy density, cost-effective structure and environmental-friendly characteristics. The chargeability is the most critical in various industrial applications such as smart portable device, electric vehicle, and power storage system. Thus, it is necessary to reduce large overpotential of oxygen reduction/evolution reaction, the irreversibility of Zn anode, and carbonation in alkaline electrolyte. In this review, we try to introduce recent studies and developments of bi-functional air cathode, enhanced charge efficiency via modification of Zn anode structure, and blocking side reactions applying hybrid organic-aqueous electrolyte for high power density rechargeable Zn-Air energy storage cells.
