  • FIB is introduced as the sole guideline for the design purpose that results in a practical relationship for the torsional capacity of concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). This study applies first-order reliability method to assess the reliability evaluation of the torsional capacity of CFRP-strengthened beams on the basis of FIB guidelines. In terms of steel reinforcement losses, this study applies a corrosion model to investigate the ceaseless deterioration of the existing structure. Hence, the average of reliability indices varies between 2.68 and 2.80, indicating the reliability viewpoint of the design methodologies. The average values are somehow low compared to the target values of reliability (3.0 or 3.5) applied in the calibration stage of the FIB guideline. In this way, the partial safety factors may change in the forthcoming guideline revisions. For this aim, the reliability of strengthening ratio was applied to assess the variation in the average value of the reliability index with different partial safety factors. The performance of parametric study for the factor proved that minimum values of 1.60 and 2.32 are required for target values of reliability (3.0 and 3.5), respectively.

  • This study examined the use of Facebook in United Arab Emirates. There were two objectives of this study. The first purpose was to identify the motive for the use of Facebook among people in U.A.E. This study conducted the survey using both qualitative and quantitative methods. One hundred eighty-three working people were used from the survey. Thirty-five questions identified from the interviews were used for the questionnaire design in quantitative method. Factor analysis showed six factors namely usefulness, usage, reliability, making new friends, ethical issue and openness of information. The total variance explained by all the factors was fifty-two percent. This study also examined the demographic variables whether they would play an important role in using the social network site. The study included two more variables, income and married status, which were not frequently examined by previous studies. MANOVA showed statistical significant differences (p < .01) across six factors. ANOVA results showed that gender variable affected only the factor of openness of information. Males were more likely to share their information compared to females. Income variable affected all the factors except the openness of information. The results showed that high-income people had the highest meanscores on three factors (usage, reliability, making new friends) while low-income people had the highest means on usefulness and ethical factors.Marital status had significant effects on usefulness, reliability, and ethical factors. Married people had the low scores on reliability and ethical factors. Lastly, education variable had no effect on all the factors examined.

  • Load Resistance Factor Design method is used increasingly in geotechnical design world widely and resistance factors for drilled shafts are suggested by AASHTO. However, these resistance factors are determined for intact rock conditions, by comparison most of bedrocks in Korea are weathered condition, so that applying the AASHTO resistance factors is not reasonable. Thus, this study suggests the proper resistance factors for design of drilled shaft in Korea. The 22 cases of pile load test data from 8 sites were chosen and reliability-based approach is used to analyze the data. Reliability analysis was performed by First Order Second Moment Method (FOSM) applying 4 bearing capacity equations. As a result, when the Factor of Safety(FOS) were selected as 3.0, the target reliability index($\beta_c$) were evaluated about 2.01~2.30. Resistance factors and load factors are determined from optimization based on above results. The resistance factors ranged between 0.48 and 0.56 and load factor for dead load and live load are evaluated approximately 1.25 and 1.75 respectively. However, when the target reliability are considered as 3.0, the resistance factors are evaluated as approximately 50% of results when the target reliability index were 2.0.

  • Calibration of load-resistance factors for the limit state design of perforated caisson breakwaters are presented. Reliability analysis of 12 breakwaters in nationwide ports was conducted. Then, partial safety factors and load-resistance factors were sequentially calculated according to target reliability index. Load resistance factors were optimized to give one set of factor for limit state design of breakwater. The breakwaters were redesigned by using the optimal load resistance factor and verified whether reliability indices larger than the target value. Finally, some load-resistance factors were proposed by changing target reliability index.

  • Since reliability and security of man-machine system increasingly depend on reliability of human, human reliability analysis (HRA) has attracted a lot of attention in many fields especially in nuclear engineering. Dependence assessment among human tasks is a important part in HRA which contributes to an appropriate evaluation result. Most of methods in HRA are based on experts' opinions which are subjective and uncertain. Also, the dependence influencing factors are usually considered to be constant, which is unrealistic. In this paper, a new model based on Dempster-Shafer evidence theory (DSET) and fuzzy number is proposed to handle the dependence between two tasks in HRA under uncertain and dynamic situations. First, the dependence influencing factors are identified and the judgments on the factors are represented as basic belief assignments (BBAs). Second, the BBAs of the factors that varying with time are reconstructed based on the correction BBA derived from time value. Then, BBAs of all factors are combined to gain the fused BBA. Finally, conditional human error probability (CHEP) is derived based on the fused BBA. The proposed method can deal with uncertainties in the judgments and dynamics of the dependence influencing factors. A case study is illustrated to show the effectiveness and the flexibility of the proposed method.

  • Recently, interest in ChatGPT has been increasing. This study investigated the factors influencing the satisfaction of users using ChatGPT service, a chatbot system based on artificial intelligence technology. This paper empirically analyzed causality between the four major factors of service quality, system quality, information quality, and security as independent variables and user satisfaction of ChatGPT as dependent variable. In addition, the mediating effect of reliability between the independent variables and user's satisfaction was analyzed. As a result of this research, except for information quality, among the quality factors, security and reliability had a positive causality with use satisfaction. Reliability played a mediating role between quality factors, security, and user satisfaction. However, among quality factors, the mediating effect of reliability between service quality and user's satisfaction was not significant. In conclusion, in order to increase user satisfaction with new technology-based services, it is important to create trust among users. The research results sought to emphasize the importance of user trust in establishing development and operation strategies for artificial intelligence systems, including ChatGPT.

  • In conventional probability-based human reliability analysis, the basic human error rates are modified by experts to consider the influences of many factors that affect human reliability. However, these influences are not easily represented quantitatively, because the relation between human reliability and each of these factors in not clear. In this paper, the relation is expressed quantitatively. Furthermore, human reliability is represented by error possibilities proposed by Onisawa, which is a fuzzy set on the interval [0,1]. Fuzzy reasoning is used in this method in order to obtain error possibilities. And, it is supposed that many basic events affected by the above factors are connected to the top event through Fault Tree structure, and an estimate of the top event expressed by a member- ship function is obtained by using the fuzzy measure and fuzzy integral. Finally, a numerical example of human reliability analysis obtained by this method is given.
