  • The design method of the reinforced concrete structures is converting from the current limit state design method to the reliability based design method and active studies have been done in the US, Europe, and Japan etc. Performance based design method is considering lots of uncertainty of current design provision rationally and make sure that structure have a reliable reliability and safety. The main area of these studies is to secure the non-linear analysis technology with high reliability. The data for reinforced concrete columns tested by many researchers are used to verify the applicability of the nonlinear finite element analysis program (RCAHEST, Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology). A comparison is made between analysis and test, calculated safety factor based on reliability theories to applies to analysis result.

  • Carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNTFETs) have been widely studied as a promising technology to be included in post-complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor integrated circuits. Despite significant advantages in terms of delay and power dissipation, the fabrication process for CNTFETs is plagued by fault occurrences. Therefore, developing a fast and accurate method for estimating the reliability of CNTFET-based digital circuits was the main goal of this study. In the proposed method, effects related to faults that occur in a gate's transistors are first represented as a probability transfer matrix. Next, the target circuit's graph is traversed in topological order and the reliabilities of the circuit's gates are computed. The accuracy of this method (less than 3% reliability estimation error) was verified through various simulations on the ISCAS 85 benchmark circuits. The proposed method outperforms previous methods in terms of both accuracy and computational complexity.

  • This research proposes a reliability-based topology optimization (RBTO) using the finite element method. RBTO is a topology optimization based on probabilistic (or reliability) constraints. Young's modulus, thickness, and loading are considered as the uncertain variables and RBTO is applied to static and eigenvalue problems. The RBTO problems are formulated and a sensitivity analysis is performed. In order to compute probability constraints, two methods-RIA and PMA-are used. Several examples show the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing the classical safety factor method.

  • Probabilistic Risk Assessment considering statistically random variables is performed for the preliminary design of a Arch Bridge. Component reliabilities of girders have been evaluated using the response surfaces of the design variables at the selected critical sections based on the maximum shear and negative moment locations. Response Surface Method(RSM) is successfully applied for reliability analyses for this relatively small probability of failure of the complex structure, which is hard to be obtained by Monte-Carlo Simulations or by First Order Second Moment Method that can not easily calculate the derivative terms of implicit limit state functions. For the analysis of system reliability, parallel resistance system composed of girders is changed into parallel series connection system. The upper and lower probabilities of failure for the structural system have been evaluated and compared with the suggested prediction method for the combination of failure modes. The suggested prediction method for the combination of failure modes reveals the unexpected combinations of element failures in significantly reduced time and efforts compared with the previous permutation method or system reliability analysis method.

  • A method for decoupling reliability based design optimization problem into a set of deterministic optimization and performing a reliability analysis is described. The inner reliability analysis and the outer optimization are performed separately in a sequential manner. Since the outer optimizer must perform a large number of iterations to find the optimized shape and size of structure, the computational cost is very high. Therefore, during the course of this research, new multilevel reliability optimization methods are developed that divide the design domain into two sub-spaces to be employed in an iterative procedure: one of the shape design variables, and the other of the size design variables. In each iteration, the probability constraints are converted into equivalent deterministic constraints using reliability analysis and then implemented in the deterministic optimization problem. The framework is first tested on a short column with cross-sectional properties as design variables, the applied loads and the yield stress as random variables. In addition, two cases of curvilinearly stiffened panels subjected to uniform shear and compression in-plane loads, and two cases of curvilinearly stiffened panels subjected to shear and compression loads that vary in linear and quadratic manner are presented.

  • The natural frequencies of a mechanical system are determined by the system parameters such as masses and stiffness of the system. Since material irregularities and manufacturing tolerances always exist in most of practical engineering situations, the system parameters always have uncertainties. As the uncertainties of the parameters increase, the uncertainties of the system natural frequencies also increases. Then, the reliability of the system deteriorates. So, the uncertainty of the system natural frequencies should be analyzed accurately and considered in the design of the system. In order to analyze the uncertainty of the system natural frequencies employing most of existing uncertainty analysis methods, the probability distributions of the uncertain system parameters should be identified. In most practical situations, however, identification of the probability distributions is almost impossible because of limited time and cost. For that case, the reliability should be estimated based on finite samples of the system parameters. In this paper, sample based reliability estimation method employing extreme value theory was proposed. Using the proposed estimation method, sample based reliability design of the system natural frequencies was conducted.

  • This paper deals with a design of observer based fault detection filter for a boiler-turbine control system. The goal is to present a method for rapid sensor fault detection in order to enhance the reliability of boiler-turbine operation in the thermal power plant. Our fault detection filter can be designed via solutions of linear matrix inequalities. In order to demonstrate the efficacy of our design method, numerical simulations are provided.

  • In this study, RBDO(Reliability Based Design Optimization) was performed for a supersonic double-wedge inlet. By considering uncertainty of design with given design space, the pressure recovery was transformed into the probabilistic constraint while the inlet drag was considered as a deterministic objective function. To save computational analysis cost and to search good design space, Latin-Hypercube design of experiment and the Kriging model were incorporated and then RBDO was performed. Monte-Carlo simulation was performed to verify the accuracy of AFORM(Advanced First Order Reliability Method). It was found that AFORM result agreed very well with the Monte-Carlo simulation result. The system reliability was guaranteed by considering uncertainty of the design variables. In case of considering diverse uncertainty of system design, RBDO was found to be useful.

  • One of the applicable methods for the stabilization of soil walls is the nailing system which consists of tensile struts. The stability and safety of soil nail wall systems are influenced by the geometrical parameters of the nailing system. Generally, the determination of nailing parameters in order to achieve optimal performance of the nailing system for the safety of soil walls is defined in the framework of optimization problems. Also, according to the various uncertainty in the mechanical parameters of soil structures, it is necessary to evaluate the reliability of the system as a probabilistic problem. In this paper, the optimal design of the nailing system is carried out in deterministic and probabilistic cases using meta-heuristic and reliability-based design optimization methods. The colliding body optimization algorithm and first-order reliability method are used for optimization and reliability analysis problems, respectively. The objective function is defined based on the total cost of nails and safety factors and reliability index are selected as constraints. The mechanical properties of the nailing system are selected as design variables and the mechanical properties of the soil are selected as random variables. The results show that the reliability of the optimally designed soil nail system is very sensitive to uncertainty in soil mechanical parameters. Also, the design results are affected by uncertainties in soil mechanical parameters due to the values of safety factors. Reliability-based design optimization results show that a nailing system can be designed for the expected level of reliability and failure probability.
