Controlled drug release is important for effective treatment of cancer. Poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) acid (PLGA) is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved polymer and have been extensively studied as drug delivery carriers with biodegradable and biocompatible properties. However, PLGA drug delivery carriers are limited due to the initial burst release of drug. Certain drugs require an early rapid release, but in many cases the initial rapid release can be inefficient, reducing therapeutic effects and also increasing side effects. Therefore, sustained release is important for effective treatment. Poly Lactic Acid stereo complex (PLA SC) is resistant to hydrolysis and has high stability in aqueous solutions. Therefore, in this work, PLGA based discoidal polymeric particles are modified by Poly Lactic Acid stereocomplex (PLAsc DPPs). PLAsc DPPs are 3 ㎛ in diameter, also showing a relatively sustained release profile. Fluorescein 5(6)-isothiocyanate (FITC) released from PLAsc DPPs was continuously observed until 38 days, which showed the initial release of FITC from PLAsc DPPs was about 3.9-fold reduced as compared to PLGA based DPPs at 1 hour.
In wafer level molding progress, the thermal releasing failure phenomenon is shown up as the important problem. This phenomenon can cause the problem including the warpage, crack of the molded wafer. The thermal releasing failure is due to the insufficiency of adhesion strength degradation of the molding tape. To solve this problem, we studied experimental method increasing the release property of the molding tape through the plasma surface treatment on the wafer substrate. In this research, the vacuum plasma treatment system is used for release property improvement of the molding tape and controls the operating condition of the hydrophilic($O_2$, 100kW, 10min) and hydrophobic($C_2F_6$, 200kW, 10min). In order to perform the peeling test for measuring the releasing force precisely, we remodel the micro scale material property evaluation system developed by Korea institute of industrial technology. In case of hydrophilic surface treatment on the wafer substrate, we can figure out the releasing property of molding tape increase. In order to grasp the effect that it reaches to the release property increase when repeating the hydrophilic treatment, we make an experiment with twice treatment and get the result to increase about 12%. We find out the hydrophilic surface treatment method using plasma can improve releasing property of molding tape in the wafer level molding process.
In the present study, we tried to investigate whether polymerized basic amino acid e.g. poly-L-lysine (PLL) which has the degree of polymerization under 50mer significantly affects the physiological and stimulated mucin release from cultured hamster tracheal surface epithelial cells. Confluent primary hamster tracheal surface epithelial (HTSE) cells were metabolically radiolabeled with $^3{H}$-glucosamine for 24 hr and chased for 30 min in the presence of either PLLs or adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and PLL to assess the effects on basic or ATP-stimulated $^3{H}$-mucin release. Possible cytotoxicities of PLLs were assessed by measuring lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release from HTSE cel1s during treatment. The results were as follows: PLLs significantly inhibited basic mucin release from cultured HTSE cells in a dose-dependent manner from the range of 46mer to 14mer; PLL 46mer significantly inhibited the stimulated mucin release by ATP from cultured HTSE cells; there was no significant release of LDH from cultured HTSE cells during treatment. We conclude that PLLs inhibit both physiological and stimulated mucin release from airway epithelial cells without significant cytotoxicity and PLL lost its activity under the range of 14mer. This finding suggests that polymer of basic amino acid like PLL might function as a regulator for hypersecretion of mucus manifested in various respiratory diseases.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of myofascial release technique on pain threshold and hormonal changes in patients with adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder. Methods: Eight patients with adhesive capsulitis were treated with the myofascial release technique. Myofascial release is a form of manual therapy that involves the application of a low load, long duration stretch to the myofascial complex, intended to restore optimal length, decrease pain, and improve function. Blood tests and pressure pain threshold (PPT) examinations were performed on their first visit. On their second visit, the myofascial release technique was applied to the shoulder for 20 min. Then, blood tests and PPT were re-evaluated to determine the effects of the myofascial release technique on pain threshold and hormonal changes. Results: Pain threshold increased from 2.92 to 24.13 lb after treatment. Epinephrine decreased from .13 to .08 ng/mL whereas norepinephrine increased from .25 to .41ng/㎖ after treatment. Conclusion: Myofascial release technique in patients with adhesive capsulitis increased pain thresholds, norepinephrine and decreased epinephrine levels.
This study was performed to evaluate the burning characteristics of wood-based materials and the effect of surface treatment of fire retardant using cone calorimeter. Four types of wood-based materials, such as Plywood, Oriented Strand Board (OSB), Particle Board (PB) and Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), were tested at a constant heat flux of $50kW/m^2$ to investigate the time to ignition, mass loss rate, heat release rate, effective heat of combustion, etc. In addition, each type of wood-based material was tested at the same heat flux after fire retardant treatment on the surface to evaluate the effect of this treatment on the burning characteristics. The surface treatment of fire retardant, by the amount of $110g/m^2$, delayed the time to ignition almost twice. However, it was indicated that heat release rate, mass loss rate, and effective heat of combustion were not significantly affected by fire retardants treatment for all types of wood-based materials.
To develop topical nitroglycerin (NTG) preparation far chronic anal fissure treatment, the release rate of NTG should be controlled carefully. For this, microemulsion was prepared from the phase diagram construction with Cremophor ELP, ethanol and Labrafil $M1944CS^{(R)}$ and the topical gel was prepared by dispersing NTG containing microemulsion into hydrophilic polymers. in viかo release characteristics were evaluated with Franz diffusion cell using cellulose membrane and compared with control hydrogels. The release rate of NTG was followed $1^{st}$ order kinetics and, when comparing the NTG release from control hydrogel with that from the microemulsion-based hydrogel, the NTG release rate was controlled by the content of polymers within continuous phase and the concentration of dispersed phase.

Purpose: This study was to evaluate effects of myofascial release therapy for newborns and infants with congenital torticollis. Methods: In a two month period, thirty-six newborns and infants diagnosed with congenital muscular torticollis received treatment thirty times; then divided into a myofascial release group and stretching group. Crying frequency was used to measure the amount of crying time during treatment. Ultrasonography was used to measure the size of fibromatosis. Physical examinations were used to measure the degree of head tilting and rotation. Results: The results were as follows: 1. Crying frequency was significantly decreased in myofascial degree group. 2. The size of fibromatosis was not significantly decreased in ultrasonography. 3. Head tilt was significantly decreased in myofascial release group. 4. Rotation was not significantly increased in myofascial release and control group. Conclusion: The above results suggest that myofascial release therapy is helpful decreasing head tilt, crying frequency, and increasing head rotation.
In this study, we tried to investigate whether poly-L-arginine (PLA) (MW 10,800) significantly affect mucin release from cultured hamster airway goblet cells and the mucosubstances of hypersecretory air-way goblet cells of rats. Confluent primary hamster tracheal surface epithelial (HTSE) cells were metabolically radiolabeled with $^3$H-glucosamine for 24 hr and chased for 30 min in the presence of varying concentrations of PLA to assess the effects on $^3$H-mucin release. Possible cytotoxicities of PLA were assessed by measuring both Lactate Dehydrogenate (LDH) release and by checking the possible changes on the morphology of HTSE cells during treatment. For in vivo experiment, hyperplasia of rat airway goblet cells and increase in intraepithelial mucosubstances were induced by exposing rats to SO$_2$ for 3 weeks and varying concentrations of PLA were administered inhalationally to assess the effects on the mucosubstances of airway goblet cells of rats. The results were as follows : (1) PLA significantly inhibited mucin release from cultured HTSE cells in a dose-dependent manner; (2) there was no significant release of LDH and no significant change on the morphology of cultured HTSE cells during treatment; (3) PLA also affected the intraepithelial mucosubstances of hypersecretory rats and restored them to the levels of control animals. We conclude that PLA inhibit mucin release from airway goblet cells without significant cytotoxicity and possibly normalize the hypersecretion of airway mucosubstances in vivo. This finding suggests that PLA might function as an airway mucoregulative agent.

Biodegradable wafers were prepared with poly (hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV;5, 10, and 15 mole% for 3-hydroxyvalerate) by simple heat pressing method for the sustained release of antibiotic agent, gentamicin sulfate (GS) to investigate the possibility of the treatment for osteomyelitis. The effects of hydroxyvalerate (HV) content, thickness of wafers, various types of additives such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), microcrystalline cellulose, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC), and different initial drug loading ratio on the release profile have been investigated. In vitro release studies showed that different release patterns and rates could be achieved by simply modifying factors in the preparation conditions. PHBV wafers with 3 mm thickness, 10% of GS initial loading, 15% of HV content and addition of 5% of SDS and HPC were free from initial burst and a near-zero-order sustained release was observed for over 30 days. It might be suggested that the mechanisms of G5 release may be more predominant simple dissolution and diffusion of GS than erosion of PHBV in our system.

Struvite precipitation has been proven to be an effective method in removing and recovering ammonia nitrogen (N) and phosphate phosphorus (P) from wastewater. In this study, effects of pH, molar ratios and pre-treatment of effluent of anaerobically digested swine wastewater were investigated to improve struvite crystallization. The magnesium : ammonium : phosphate ratio of 1.2 : 1.0 : 1.0 was found to be optimal, yet the molar ratio in the wastewater was 1 : 74.9 : 1.8. From the analysis, the optimum pH was between 8.0 and 9.0 for maximal phosphate P release and from 8.0 to 10.0 for maximal ammonia N and phosphate P removal from real wastewater. Analysis from Visual MINTEQ predicted the pH range of 7-11 for ammonia N and phosphate P removal and recovery as struvite. For pre-treatment, microwave pre-treatment was ineffective for phosphate P release but ultrasound pre-treatment showed up to 77.4% phosphate P release at 1,000 kJ/L of energy dose. Precipitates analysis showed that phosphorus and magnesium in the collected precipitate had almost same values as theoretical values, but the ammonia content was less than the theoretical value.
