In order to develop hydroquinone analogues for topical delivery, a structure-activity relationship study has been performed. A series of 2-substituted hydroquinones were tested for their ability to inhibit mushroom tyrosinase, alter melanin release and exert cytotoxicity in B6-F10 melanocytes. The electronic property of the 2-substituents did not affect the tyrosinase inhibition nor melanocyte toxicity. However, lipophilicity did affect to some degree the tyrosinase inhibition. The discrepancy in the structure-activity relationship may be due to the poor aqueous solubility of select analogues. Compounds with steric bulk at the 2-position seems to be less soluble, not enabling the analogue to interact effectively with the tyrosinase enzyme. Among the analogues tested, 2-isopropyl hydroquinone seems to be the most promising candidate for topical delivery, being the least toxic analogue with moderate melanin release inhibition.

Laminar flows in which mixing and chemical reactions take place between parallel streams of reactive species are studied numerically. The governing equations for laminar flows are from two-dimensional compressible boundary-layer equations. The chemistry is a finite rate single step irreversible reaction with Arrhenius kinetics. Ignition, premixed flame, and diffusion flame regimes are found to exist in the laminar reacting mixing layer at high activation energy. At high Mach numbers, ignition occurs earlier due to the higher temperatures in the unburnt gas. In diffusion regimes, property variations affect the laminar profiles considerably and need to be included when there are large temperature differences. The maximum temperature of a laminar reacting mixing layer is almost linear with the adiabatic flame temperature at low heat release, but only weakly at high heat release.
The clinical application of aligners is accompanied by the ageing of the polymer appliances and the attachments used, which may result in inefficiency in reaching the predicted range of tooth movement, and release of compounds and microplastics in the oral cavity as a result of the friction, wear and attrition of the aligner and composite attachment. The purpose of this review is to present the mechanism and effects of in vivo ageing; describe the hydrolytic degradation of aligners and enzymatic degradation of composite attachments; examine the ageing pattern of aligners in vivo, under actual clinical scenarios; and identify a link to the discrepancy between predicted and actual clinical outcome. Lastly, strategies to deal with three potentially critical issues associated with the use of aligners, namely the necessity of weekly renewal, the dissimilar mechanical properties of aligner and attachment resulting in wear and plastic deformation of the aligner, and the development of integuments and biofilms with microbial colonization of the appliance, are discussed.
Slip along a frictional fracture can be approached as initiation and propagation of a mode II crack along its own plane. Fracture mechanics theories predict that under pure mode II loading initiation will occur when the energy release rate of the fracture attains a critical value ($G_{IIC}$), which is generally taken as a material property. For the past few years the rock mechanics group at Purdue University has investigated experimentally the dependence of $G_{IIC}$ on normal stress and on the frictional characteristics of a fracture. A number of experiments has been conducted first on acrylic, a material that, using photoelastic methods, allows visualization of the stress field ahead of the fracture tip; and later on gypsum, a rock model material with relatively low unconfined compression strength. The experimental investigation has been expanded to include other frictional materials with higher unconfined compression strength. Direct shear tests have been conducted on specimens made with cement paste. New observations together with previous experiments indicate that $G_{IIC}$ can only be considered a material property when the peak friction angle of the discontinuity is similar to the residual friction angle; otherwise the critical energy release rate increases with normal stress.
A novel triazole-functionalized phenolic resin was developed, and its thermal and flame-retardant properties were investigated. The triazole group was incorporated as a pendant unit on the phenolic resin via copper-mediated click chemistry between propargylated phenolic resin and benzyl azide. The newly-developed triazole-functionalized phenolic resin showed higher thermal stability and char yield, together with a reduced total heat release (THR), than the non-functionalized bare phenolic resin, indicating enhanced flame retardancy for the triazole-functionalized phenolic resin.
There is close relation between the heat generation and the performance of electronic device. The durability and efficiency of the device are degraded due to heat generation. It is necessary to release the generated heat from an electronic device. Based on demands of the printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing, the robust and reliable plating technique of PCB is necessary. In this study, we review various methods for improving the heat sink property. These methods were considered to enhance the adhesion between ceramic substrate as heat sink and metal layer as electrode.

Buried natural gas pipelines in densely populated urban areas have serious hazards of property damages and casualties generated by release, dispersion, fire and explosion of gas caused by outside or inside failures. So as to prevent any accident in advance, managers implement danger management based on quantitative risk analysis. In order to evaluate quantitative risk about buried natural gas pipelines, we need calculation for radiant heat and pressure wave caused by calculation for release rate of chemical material, dispersion analysis, fire or explosion modeling through consequence analysis in priority, in this paper, we carry out calculation for release rate of pressured natural gas, radiant heat of fireball based in accident scenario of actual "San Bruno" buried high pressured pipelines through models which CCPS, TNO provide and compare with an actual damage result.
As a basic study for reusing converter slag as slow-release potassium fertilizer by a sintering process, powdery converter slag and reagent grade $SiO_2\;and\;K_2CO_3$ were mixed with ball mill above 24 hours and sintered at $900^{\circ}C{\sim}1000^{\circ}C\;for\;10{\sim}60$ min. Basicity of the mixed powder was controlled to 0.7, 1.0 and 1.4 and content of $K_2O$ was fixed with 22 mass%. After sintering, property of the potassium fertilizer was investigated with X-ray diffraction pattern and ICP analysis. Also effects of basicity, sintering temperature and time on the making slow-release potassium fertilizer was investigated. Water solubility of KBO in sample were decreased with sintering time, temperature and decreased with basicity. Citric acid solubility of $K_2O$ were increased with basicity and decreased with sintering temperature.

Dual-layer differential codebook using 8-PSK (phase shift keying) constellation as its codeword elements, is proposed for Long term evolution (LTE) and/or LTE-Advanced systems. Due to the temporal correlation of the adjacent channel matrices, the consecutive precoding matrices are likely to be similar. This approach quantize only the differential information of the channel instead of the whole channel subspace, which virtually increase the codebook size to realize more accurate quantization of the channel. Especially, the proposed codebook has the same properties of LTE release-8 codebook that is, constant modulus, complexity reduction, and nested property. The mobile station can be designed by using less expensive non-linear amplifier utilizing constant modulus property. Computer simulations show that the capacity of the proposed dual-layer codebook performs almost 1.2dB better than those of any other non-differential codebooks with the same amount of feedback information.
Injectable chitosan hydrogels have attracted great potential due to sustained-release property and safety. Here, palmityl-acylated glycol chitosan (Pal-GC) was used to generate physically cross-linked hydrogels by virtue of hydrophobic attraction of linear fatty carbons. Glycol chitosan was chemically modified with N-hydroxysuccinimide-activated palmitic acid in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) containing dimethylaminopyridine. Through a series of preparation steps of (i) dialysis with DMSO, (ii) addition of palmityl-acylated exendin-4 (Ex4-C16), and (iii) dialysis with water, Pal-GC was self-assembled to form physically cross-linked hydrogels entrapped with Ex4-C16. The Pal-GC derivative was analyzed by using 1H NMR, and the surface morphology of Pal-GC hydrogels formed was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Also, the hypoglycemic effect induced by Pal-GC hydrogels containing Ex4-C16 (250 nmol/kg) was evaluated in non-fasted type 2 diabetic db/db mice and compared with GC hydrogels containing native Ex4 at the same dose. Results showed that palmityl group was successfully conjugated with the amines of glycol chitosan, and that Pal-GC efficiently generated the hydrogels formation. Moreover, Pal-GC hydrogels containing Ex4-C16 was found to greatly prolong the hypoglycemia duration (~ 4 days). This was due to the dual-functions of the palmityl groups present in both GC and exendin-4 such as hydrophobic attraction and plasma albumin-binding. We consider this new type of self-assembled GC hydrogels loaded with Ex4-C16 would be a promising long-acting sustained-release system with anti-diabetic property.
