  • In this paper, we study the opportunistic cooperation scheme that improves the outage performance through the efficient selection between a cooperative mode and a non-cooperative mode. Especially, in decode-and-forward relaying systems, we analyze the outage performance for the opportunistic cooperation using partial relay selection, where closed-form expressions of exact and asymptotic outage probabilities are derived assuming independent and identically distributed Rayleigh fading channels. In the numerical results, we verify the derived expressions, and investigate the outage performances for various target data rates and different numbers of relays. Also, we compare the outage performances of the conventional cooperation scheme and the opportunistic cooperation scheme.

  • We consider a two-hop multiple-relay network implemented with opportunistic decode-and-forward cooperative strategy, where the first hop and second hop links experience different fading (Rayleigh and Rician). We derive the exact expressions of end-to-end outage probability and analyze the approximate results in high signal-to-noise ratio region. The analysis shows that the same diversity order can be achieved even in different mixed fading environments. Simulation results are provided to verify our analysis.

  • This paper addresses the problem of resource allocation in amplify-and-forward (AF) relayed OFDM based cognitive radio networks (CRNs). The purpose of resource allocation is to maximize the overall throughput, while satisfying the constraints on the individual power and the interference induced to the primary users (PUs). Additionally, different from the conventional resource allocation problem, the rate-guarantee constraints of the subcarriers are considered. We formulate the problem as a mixed integer programming task and adopt the dual decomposition technique to obtain an asymptotically optimal power allocation, subcarrier pairing and relay selection. Moreover, we further design a suboptimal algorithm that sacrifices little on performance but could significantly reduce computational complexity. Numerical simulation results confirm the optimality of the proposed algorithms and demonstrate the impact of the different constraints.

  • Decode-and-forward cooperative communications protocol (DFP) allows single-antenna users in wireless medium to obtain the powerful benefits of multi-antenna systems without physical antenna arrays. For this protocol, so far the relays have used SNR to evaluate the reliability of the received signal before deciding whether to forward the decoded data so as to prevent their unsuccessful detection. However, SNR only characterizes the long-term statistic of Gaussian noise and thus leading to inaccurate assesment. Therefore, we propose using log-likelihood ratio (LLR) which accounts for the instantaneous noise in the received signal as an alternative to SNR. A variety of simulation results reveal the significant superiority of the SNR-based DFP to the SNR-based DFP regardless of threshold level and relay position under the flat Rayleigh fading channel plus AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise).

  • It is widely observed that in practical wireless cooperative communication systems, different links may experience different fading characteristics. In this paper, we investigate into the outage probability and channel capacity of two-way amplify-and-forward (TWAF) relaying systems operating over a mixed asymmetric Rician and Rayleigh fading scenario, with different amplification policies (AP) adopted at the relay, respectively. As TWAF relay network carries concurrent traffics towards two opposite directions, both end-to-end and overall performance metrics were considered. In detail, both uniform exact expressions and simplified asymptotic expressions for the end-to-end outage probability (OP) were presented, based on which the system overall OP was studied under the condition of the two source nodes having non-identical traffic requirements. Furthermore, exact expressions for tight lower bounds as well as high SNR approximations of channel capacity of the considered scenario were presented. For both OP and channel capacity, with different APs, effective power allocation (PA) schemes under different constraints were given to optimize the system performance. Extensive simulations were carried out to verify the analytical results and to demonstrate the impact of channel asymmetry on the system performance.

  • In this paper, we use the ECMA-392 standard, the first cognitive radio networks to meet the demand for IT services in the ship. We propose a ECMA-392 cooperative MAC protocol to ensure QoS to support multimedia services in the ship area in a multi-hop wireless bridge using ECMA-392 networks. Because the proposed protocol transmits directly or relay transmission by selecting efficient routes based on the information of the ECMA-392 devices, it provides communication to ensure QoS of the device. The simulation results show that the proposed cooperative MAC protocol improves a throughput of devices compared to the existing method.

  • In this paper, diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of three-user wireless multiple-antenna cooperative systems is investigated in general fading channels when half-duplex and decode-and-forward relay is employed. Three protocols, i.e., adaptive protocol, receive diversity protocol, and dual-hop relaying protocol, are considered. The general fading channels may include transmit and/or receive correlation and nonzero channel means, and are extensions of independent and identically distributed Rayleigh or Rician fading channels. Firstly, simple DMT expressions are derived for general fading channels with zero channel means and no correlation when users employ arbitrary number of antennas. Explicit DMT expressions are also obtained when all users employ the same number of antennas and the channels between any two users are of the same fading statistics. Finally, the impact of nonzero channel means and/or correlation on DMT is evaluated. It is revealed theoretically that the DMTs depend on the number of antennas at each user, channel means (except for Rayleigh and Rician fading statistics), transmit and/or receive correlation, and the polynomial behavior near zero of the channel gain probability density function. Examples are also provided to illustrate the analysis and results.

  • In this paper, we firstly propose a novel cooperative transmission protocol, which utilizes the advantages of mid-notes in the route from the source to the destination. Taking benefits from balancing between the received packet from the source and acknowledge message from the destination, the mid-node between the source and the destination is firstly considered to be the broadcaster. If its signal is successfully received from the source, it leads to consider the next nodes, which has closer distance to the destination than it. If one of these nodes correctly receives the signal, it performs broadcasting the signal to the destination instead of mid-node. Otherwise, the mid-node directs attention to these nodes being near to the destination. As the result, some nodes are unnecessary to be considered and passed over time. After that, we analyze some published selection relaying schemes based on geographic information to choose the best nodes instead of the instantaneous SNR as before. Finally, simulation results are given to demonstrate the correctness of the performance analyses and show the significant improvement of the selection relaying schemes based geographic information compared to the other ones.

  • In this paper, we investigate the cognitive and cooperative communication scheme to improve the spectral efficiency in multiuser OFDMA systems using wireless relays. First, we propose the frame structure in which the efficient frequency reuse scheme with the cognitive technique is performed to increase the system throughput. And in the case where the THP (Tomlinson-Harashima preceding) is used for the elimination of interference from the relay, we derive the effective signal to noise ratio of the link largely affected by the channel quantization error. From the system level simulation results, it is shown that the proposed cognitive and cooperative communication scheme increases the overall system performance including the feedback overhead.

  • With the emergence of various next-generation wireless networks, the traditional store and forward(SF) method at network nodes has faced limitations in efficiently utilizing network capacity. To overcome these limitations, various network coding techniques based on the decode and forward(DF) method have been proposed. However, these techniques have primarily focused on traffic environments with asymmetric packet lengths between relay nodes, limiting their applicability when different modulation and coding schemes(MCS) are applied to relay nodes. This paper proposes a relay network coding scheme that supports high frequency efficiency while simultaneously enabling bidirectional relaying using DF, considering asymmetric MCS traffic that reflects different transmission data and wireless channel conditions between individual nodes for efficient utilization of wireless network capacity. Additionally, this paper demonstrates the possibility of cooperative communication at the relay and examines the effect of increased communication distance. Subsequently, computer simulations are conducted to verify the performance gains of the proposed technique in terms of network coding for each source node with asymmetric information lengths. This proposed technique shows additional bit error rate(BER) performance gains by adopting an incremental redundancy(IR) scheme that follows network coding, even in mobile node environments where direct link transmission between source nodes is possible.
