Destruction of Giant Molecular Clouds by UV Radiation Feedback from Massive Stars

  • Star formation in galaxies predominantly takes place in giant molecular clouds (GMCs). While it is widely believed that UV radiation feedback from young massive stars can destroy natal GMCs by exciting HII regions and driving their expansion, our understanding on how this actually occurs remains incomplete. To quantitatively assess the effect of UV radiation feedback on cloud disruption, we conduct a series of theoretical studies on the dynamics of HII regions and its role in controlling the star formation efficiency (SFE) and lifetime of GMCs in a wide range of star-forming environments. We first develop a semi-analytic model for the expansion of spherical dusty HII regions driven by the combination of gas and radiation pressures, finding that GMCs in normal disk galaxies are destroyed by gas-pressure driven expansion with SFE < 10%, while more dense and massive clouds with higher SFE are disrupted primarily by radiation pressure. Next, we turn to radiation hydrodynamic simulations of GMC dispersal to allow for self-consistent star formation as well as inhomogeneous density and velocity structures arising from supersonic turbulence. For this, we develop an efficient parallel algorithm for ray tracing method, which enables us to probe a range of cloud masses and sizes. Our parameter study shows that the net SFE, lifetime (measured in units of free-fall time), and the importance of radiation pressure (relative to photoionization) increase primarily with the initial surface density of the cloud. Unlike in the idealized spherical model, we find that the dominant mass loss mechanism is photoevaporation rather than dynamical ejection and that a significant fraction of radiation escapes through low optical-depth channels.   • In Vehicular Ad-hoc Network(VANET) which constructs networks without fixed infrastructure among vehicles, network topology is frequently changed due to high mobility. In case of urban model, communication disconnections caused by interruptions of communication propagation such as buildings and constructions could be often occurred. Therefore, in VANET environment a routing protocol to complement its characteristics is needed. This paper suggests an algorithm to improve the transmission performance at intersections by approaching of the distance-based broadcasting which utilizes the information of vehicle's position. By using relative velocity among vehicles, it makes the stability of route decision improved and reduces packet collisions through graded priorities in the intersection, and simultaneously improves the performance of data rate. It can be seen that the performance compared with previous algorithm is significantly improved when using the suggested algorithm in the urban traffic environment.

  • This paper presents the analysis of the human driving behavior based on the expression as a GMDH technique focusing on the driver's collision avoidance maneuver. The driving data are collected by using the three dimensional driving simulator based on CAVE, which provides stereoscopic immersive vision. A GMDH is also introduced and applied to the measured data in order to build a mathematical model of driving behavior. From the obtained model, it is found that the longitudinal distance between cars($x_1$), the longitudinal relative velocity($x_2$) and the lateral displacement between cars($x_4$) play important roles in the collision avoidance maneuver under the 3D environments.

Preliminary Tomographic hversion for the Crustal Characteristics in the Central Region of South Korea (남한 중부지역의 지각특성 구명을 위한 토모그라피 역산에 의한 예비적 연구)

  • P wave traveltime delays has been measured and a preliminary tomouaphic inversion has been performed using the data collected from the network deployed by Korea National University of Education in the southcentral part Korea. The maximum variation in relative traveltime residuals is almost 0.7 seconds. A large azimuthal variation in traveltime residuals is observed at the stations in the northwestern part of the study area. This might indicate the existence of lateral velocity heterogeneity beneath the study area. Although, the inverted tomographic image seems to be correlated with the tectonic boundary between Kyunggi Massif and Okcheon Belt, the confidence level is presently low. We should place on the importance of this study for finding preferable inversion parameters and predicting probable result. Better tomographic image of the study area can be obtained in the near future when the data are accumulated.

  • To establish a floating offshore wind turbine simulation model, a tension leg platform is added to an onshore wind turbine. The wind load is calculated by using meteorological administration data and a power law that defines the wind velocity according to the height from the sea surface. The wind load is applied to the blade and wind tower at a regular distance. The relative Morison equation is employed to generate the wave load. The rated rotor speed (18 rpm) is applied to the hub as a motion. The dynamic behavior of a 2-MW floating offshore wind turbine subjected to the wave excitation and wind load is analyzed. The flexible effects of the wind tower and the blade are analyzed. The flexible model of the wind tower and blade is established to examine the natural frequency of the TLP-type offshore wind turbine. To study the effect of the flexible tower and blade on the floating offshore wind turbine, we modeled the flexible tower model and flexible tower-blade model and compared it with a rigid model.

Atomization Characteristics in Pneumatic Counterflowing Internal Mixing Nozzle

  • In an effort to illustrate the global variation of SMD (Sauter mean diameter, or $D_{32}$) and AMD (Arithmetic mean diameter, or $D_{10}$) at five axial downstream locations (i. e., at Z=30, 50, 80, 120, and 170 mm) under the different experimental conditions, the radial coordinate is normalized by the spray half-width. Experimental data to analyze the atomization characteristics concerning with an internal mixing type have been obtained using a PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer). The air injection pressure was varied from 40 kPa to 120 kPa. In this study, counterflowing internal mixing nozzles manufactured at an angle of $15^{\circ}$with axi-symmetric tangential-drilled four holes have been considered. By comparing the results, it is clearly possible to discern the effects of increasing air pressure, suggesting that the disintegration process is enhanced and finer spray droplets can be obtained under higher air assist. The variations in $D_{32}$ are attributed to the characteristic feature of internal mixing nozzle in which the droplets are preferentially ejected downward with strong axial momentum, and dispersed with the larger droplets which are detected in the spray centerline at the near stations and smaller ones are generated due to further subsequent breakup by higher shear stresses at farther axial locations. The poor atomization around the centre close to the nozzle exit is attributed to the fact that the relatively lower rates of spherical particles are detected and these drops are not subject to instantaneous breakup in spite of the strong axial momentum. However, substantial increases in SMD from the central part toward the edge of the spray as they go farther downstream are mainly due to the fact that the relative velocity of droplet is too low to cause any subsequent disintegration.

  • In order to verify the numerical model, which was developed to simulate the behavior of the two-phase fluid flow in a single fracture, the characteristic equation of relative permeability was incorporated into the developed numerical model, and the computed results were compared with the experimental results of the model test. As results of the sensitivity analysis on the roughness and the aperture size of fracture, the gas velocity was inversely proportional to the fracture roughness, and not proportional to the square of aperture size which is usually observed in single phase flow in a single fracture. The numerical model was applied to the underground LPG storage terminal in order to check the field applicability. The simultaneous flow of water and gas in accordance with the operation pressures in a single fracture near cavern was simulated by the model. It was shown that the leaked gas was able to be controlled in a single fracture neither by the pressure of operation nor by that of groundwater in case the fracture became smoother in roughness and smaller in aperture size.

Roll Angle Estimation of a Rolling Airframe Using a GPS and a Roll Rate Gyro (단일 GPS와 롤각속도계를 이용한 롤 회전 비행체의 롤자세각 추정)

  • In this paper, a roll angle estimation method of a rolling airframe using a low grade GPS and a roll rate gyro is proposed. The strength of the received signal of the GPS antenna attached on the rolling airframe is maximized when the GPS satellite is placed on the plane determined by the x-axis of the rolling airframe and the GPS antenna axis. Under the assumption that the x-axis of the rolling airframe is coincident with its velocity vector, the roll angle of the rolling airframe is calculated from the relative position vector of the satellite to the GPS when the GPS signal strength becomes maximum. The Kalman filter combined with a roll rate gyro is introduced to increase the determination accuracy of the roll angle. The performance of the proposed method is verified via 6-DOF simulations.

  • The large scale wind turbine blades usually experience periodic change of inflow speed due to blade rotation inside the ground shear flow region. Because of the vertical wind shear, the inflow velocity in the boundary layer region is maximum at uppermost position and minimum at lowermost position. These spatial distribution of wind speeds can lead to the periodic oscillation of the 6-component loads at hub and low speed shaft of the wind turbine rotor. In this study we compare the aerodynamic loads between two inflow conditions, i.e, uniform flow (no vertical wind shear effect) and normal wind profile. From the computed results all of the relative errors for oscillating amplitudes increased due to the ground shear flow effect. Especially bending moment and thrust at hub, and bending moments at LSS increased enormously. It turns out that the aerodynamic analysis including the ground shear flow effect must be considered for fatigue analysis.

An Artificial Intelligence Method for the Prediction of Near- and Off-Shore Fish Catch Using Satellite and Numerical Model Data

  • The production of near- and off-shore fisheries in South Korea is decreasing due to rapid changes in the fishing environment, particularly including higher sea temperature in recent years. To improve the competitiveness of the fisheries, it is necessary to provide fish catch information that changes spatiotemporally according to the sea state. In this study, artificial intelligence models that predict the CPUE (catch per unit effort) of mackerel, anchovies, and squid (Todarodes pacificus), which are three major fish species in the near- and off-shore areas of South Korea, on a 15-km grid and daily basis were developed. The models were trained and validated using the sea surface temperature, rainfall, relative humidity, pressure,sea surface wind velocity, significant wave height, and salinity as input data, and the fish catch statistics of Suhyup (National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives) as observed data. The 10-fold blind test results showed that the developed artificial intelligence models exhibited accuracy with a corresponding correlation coefficient of 0.86. It is expected that the fish catch models can be actually operated with high accuracy under various sea conditions if high-quality large-volume data are available.
